Virtualized Servers is just half the job
Decrease storage requirements at least 50%
Data protection for virtualization
Operationally efficient storage
The Protocol Mythology
Virtualization Changes Everything
It’s a virtual world now…– Virtual servers is only half of a virtual infrastructure – Virtualized storage is required to complete the infrastructure
Implementing NetApp virtual storage will…– Reduce total storage costs by 50%– Reduce RTO times to minutes– Reduce operational challenges and costs
Server virtualization needs storage virtualization to complete the strategy
Virtualization Makes a Difference

Data Protection for Virtualized Servers
The Challenge:
Shrinking backup windows and growing data sets
Virtualized servers – make this problem far worse• More data behind each server• The VMware® shared model invalidates traditional
methods• Backup windows have not grown• Backup pipes have not grown
Virtualization changes data protection requirements and creates new challenges.

Eliminating the Hidden Cost:A Scaling Bottleneck
“We want to treat storage like files – this virtualizes the ability to manipulate the virtual server.”
– VMworld07 presentation
“I think that, in the long term, we'll find high-end NAS much more friendly for high-end VMotion/DRS farms than today's SANs. And I think that NAS has the potential to offer a few benefits that we might not find in the SAN world.”
- Chuck Hollis, Vice President of Technology Alliances at EMC (December 2006 Blog)

BestVMFS
• 90% of the market• Server admin mgmt of storage• Easy, common• Locking limits scaling• More servers required• With thin prov dedupe ready
NFS
• NFS is always thin provisioned• Zero administrator management• No VMFS bottleneck• Scales to limit of array or network• Dedupe ready • Best consolidation – fewest servers
RDM
• iSCSI or FCP• Difficult mgmt model• Fastest single VM perf (FCP)• Performs to limit of array or network• Most labor intensive• Must thin prov LUNs to be dedupe ready• NetApp tools will move this up
The choice is yours, NetApp supports them all

Eliminating the Hidden Cost:A Scaling Bottleneck
The Challenge:– Server I/O is constrained with the addition of VMs– Server resources of CPU and memory are underutilized– Limits consolidation and requires more servers to be deployed
The Test:Find the I/O bottleneck
Test A Test B
Fibre Channel connect

4 VMs per host
Ethernet connect

According to conventional wisdom,Fibre Channel should win out…

Why Do We Consistently See These Results?
All data from multiple servers is encapsulated in virtual disks (VMDK in a data store)
All ESX servers in a VMware® data center speak to the same set of data stores (enables DRS, VMotion)
To maintain integrity, only one VM at a time can write to the data store– SCSI RESERVE/RELEASE locking is maintained by the
distributed servers to assure data integrity– Distributed locking of a shared data store creates an I/O limit– FCP and iSCSI cannot use the full bandwidth of 1GB
NFS does not suffer from this as each VM is its own file and WAFL® handles locking– Scaling is limited by the pipe and the array – which is the best
case!
Hence, 1 GbE out scales 4 Gb FCP

The Value of VMware on NetApp
Virtualizing servers is only ½ of the solution
NetApp virtualizes storage like VMware® virtualizes servers– Creates pools of IOPs and capacity like VMware pools CPU and memory– FlexShare™ provides QOS like DRS– Dedupe shares data with multiple VMs like VMware does with cache
VMware addresses the challenges of the enterprise– Reducing storage requirements by 50%– Reducing RTO to minutes with disk to disk solutions– Increase operational efficiencies - virtualization is to simplify
