whether by �re, �ood, heatwave, drought
or cyclone. We are constantly reminded of
the power and force of Mother Nature.
The Mercury in partnership with the National Geographic
Channel presents the Newspapers in Education resource kit for
Term 3, 2015, under the theme: Natural Disasters.
You can help your students understand the science behind
natural disasters, what e$ect they have on the globe and what
happened during events such as the Boxing Day Tsunami and
Black Saturday bush*res.
Teachers and students will have online access to compelling
National Geographic documentaries on natural disasters.
As part of the kit you will receive 40 secondary activity
worksheets and 40 primary activity worksheets directly
linked to a 10-part poster series to be published in the Mercury
and the National Geographic Channel documentaries.
The Mercury poster series will look at 10 types of natural
disasters: *re, -ood, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption,
hurricanes and cyclones, avalanche and landslides, super storm
cells, drought and lastly heatwave.
National Geographic Channel has prepared short clips students
can watch in class from some of its most popular shows on the
subject: Australia’s Great Flood; The Next Mega Tsunami;
Disaster Earth: Earthquake; Iceland Volcano Disaster;
Superstorm New York: What Really Happened; and Six Degrees
that could Change the World.
Teachers will receive class sets of 15 Mercury newspapers during
the course of the poster series.
This informative educational resource will help teachers meet

What’s in the kit
• 40 SECONDARY activity sheet workbook: activities suited
to Year 7-10 students
• 40 PRIMARY activity sheet workbook: activities suited to
Year 3-6 students
• 15 copies of the Mercury from Monday, August 17 to Friday
August 21 and Monday August 24 to Friday August 28. Each
paper contains one tabloid-size poster printed in-paper,
required to complete some of the activities. Teachers can
cut out and collect all 10 posters (only available in the
Mercury).
