REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL POLICE FOUNDATION:National Police Foundation or NPF
BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE NATIONAL POLICE FOUNDATION:The National Police Foundation is America’s oldest non-membership, non-partisan police research organization. We were founded in 1970 by the Ford Foundation to advance policing through innovation and science. We integrate the work of practitioners and social scientists to facilitate effective crime control and the progress of democratic policing strategies. We have a wide breadth of projects throughout the U.S. and Mexico. Among other efforts, we conduct scientific evaluations of policing strategies, organizational assessments, critical incident reviews, police data projects and issue timely policing pub-lications critical to practitioners and policymakers. We also have a strong interest in officer safety and wellness, preventable error in policing and helping policing enhance community trust and confidence, especially in the area of police use-of-force.

GENERAL RULES FOR STANDARDIZATION OF NPF PRINT MATERIAL:Always use:
§ the oxford comma (eg: the foundation loves, apreciates, and utilizes the oxford comma) § only one space after punctuation marks § ‘an’ prior to words that begin with a vowel sound (eg: an officer, an hour, a union, a hotel) § ‘whom’ when referring to the object of a sentence - when the answer to the question of “whom?” can be ‘him’, ‘her’, or
‘them’ (eg: the officer spoke with his partner, whom he trusted) § ‘whose’ for posession rather than ‘who’s’ which is a contraction (eg: the officer whose department) § abreviation for states in addresses (eg: Fairfax, VA) § uncapitalized compass points (north, south, east, west) and hyphenated compound nouns (eg: south-east)
» except when referring to a standard or formerly defined geographical region (eg: the North East) § words for single-figure numbers, but digits for higher numbers and decimals (eg: two, eight, 17, 1994)
» except in abbreviated units of measurement (eg: 3kg), with percentages (eg: 4%), or for consistency (eg: 4 to 12) § commas for numbers higher than 1,000
» except when discussing years § the full form (antecedent) before first use of abbreviation or acronym
» except in cases where there is no chance of misunderstanding (eg: US, FBI, CIA) § a string of all capitals with no stops for acronyms § lowercase job titles when the title is not directly next to the name (eg: Officer Mills, or Stanley Mills was an officer) § ‘fewer’ when something is countable, and ‘less’ when it is not (eg: there were fewer officers hired, or less citizens trust
officers) » except when discussing ages, heights, and weights (eg: officers less than 25 years old)
§ baseline alignment in print materials § baseline increments at 4pt in InDesign § page numbers that are centered on the bottom of Word documents and PowerPoint slides § Full justification (the text looks boxed) in large blocks of text
» except in informal writing (letters, emails, etc.) and lists § APA citation style
Never use: § more than one variation of the NPF logo for a single project § full sentences for bullet points § digits at the very start of a sentence or title (instead: Ten-Hour Shifts Are Optimal for Officers) § ampersands (&) or percent signs within blocks of text (instead: 12 percent of men and 73 percent of women)
» except within graphics and titles when necessary § contractions § semi-colons (;) interchangably with commas (,)
» instead, consider using em-dashes to denote a sudden shift in topic (eg: semicolons can be used to combine sentences or in lists that includes interjections that use commas—not em-dash interjections)
