Summary:
The National Center of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry, University of Sindh, especially
during last 12 years has emerged as a strong institution of higher learning at par with other prestigious R
& D institution. The Centre has contributed significantly in raising the ranking of the University of
Sindh. Significant achievements are production of skilled manpower i.e. M.Phil and Ph.D’s, international
research publications, several national / international conferences / seminars, presentation of Plenary
Lectures in conferences at home / abroad and providing continuous services to the local industry as well
as the community. There is one ongoing internationally funded project beside three HEC, three Pakistan
Science Foundation and one Department of Agriculture, Sindh funded projects. Under faculty
development program, 1 lecturer of this Center has returned after completion of one year HEC sponsored
post-doctoral studies in Ireland.
Recently 17 faculty members and Research Fellows have been nominated as productive scientists
in Pakistan and awarded prize the Ministry of Science & Technology. Beside this 3 research scholars
have been awarded post doctoral fellowship and 5 scholars are granted fellow ship under Research
Fellowship Programme for Foreign Citizens by TUBITEK, Turkey. This Center has developed
academic linkages with Middle East Technical University, Turkey, Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey,
Wake Forest University, USA, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, and University of Dhaka,
Bangladesh. As a result of all these efforts this Center is now being recognized internationally.

Awards achieved RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY AWARD
17 Scientists from the National Centre of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry have been
awarded Productive Scientists cash Awards by the Pakistan Council of Science & Technology,
Islamabad. The top prize in category A was won by Prof. Muhammad Iqbal Bhanger, Prof.
Tasneem G. Kazi and Dr. Imran Afreedi. Beside this Dr. Shahabuddin Memon, Dr. Tufail H.
Sheerazi, Dr. Sirajuddin, Dr. Amber Solangi, Dr. Najma Memon, Dr. Sarfaraz Mahesar and
Eight Research Fellows of this Centre have also won the award under various categories.
BEST YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD
NCEAC has received an appreciation for Dr. Hassan Imran Afridi, Lecturer NCEAC, who is
announced as "Best Young Scientist" of the year 2010 by Higher Education Commission. Dr.
Afridi has impact factor of 250 by publishing more than 140 papers in highly reputed
International Journals.

HEC’s OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AWARDS SERIES 2008-09
The Research Awards Management Committee of HEC has awarded "Best Research
Paper Award" for the year 2008-09 to one of the papers of Dr. Shahbuddin Memon with his
Ph.D. scholar Mr. Imdadullah Qureshi of NCEAC. The paper is titled as “Estimation of
chromium(VI) adsorption efficiency of novel regenerable p-tert-butylcalix[8]areneoctamide
impregnated Amberlite XAD-4 Resin" J. Hazard. Mater., 164 (2-3) 675-682, 2009

Ph.D DEGREES AWARDED
Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Mahesar has been awarded Ph.D. degree on 25-03-2011. He worked under
the supervision of Dr. Syed Tufail Hussain Sherazi and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Bhanger. His
topic of research was "Analytical Characterization and Quality Evaluation of Poultry Feed
Commercially Available in Sindh with Emphasis on Poultry feed Oil".
Dr. Aftab Ahmed Kandhro has been awarded Ph.D. degree on 25-03-2011. He worked under the
supervision of Dr. Syed Tufail Hussain Sherazi and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Bhanger. His
Ph.D. Research topic was "Study of Fatty Acid Composition of Oils & Fats by FT-IR and GC-MS
Techniques
Munawar Saeed Qureshi has been successfully examined for his Ph.D. thesis during the current
year and the result has been submitted to the University of Sindh formal approval and
announcement. His title of thesis was ‘Electrochemical assay of various polymeric products for
phthalate contents” I under supervision of Dr. Sirajuddin.

National Center of Excellence has also initiated a course work of 18 credit hours for Ph.D. fellows as
it is implemented by HEC. The courses were thoroughly designed by the subject experts and were

M.PHIL ADMISSIONS 2011-12
NCEAC has conducted a Pre-entry test for admissions in M.Phil on 18th June 2011 followed by
an interview. A total of 60 students appeared in the test and only 14 qualified. First semester will
commence from 11th July,2011.

International Conference on Current Technologies in Oils and Fats ,March 21 - 23, 2011
The NCEAC has organized a three days international conference on “Current Technologies in Oils &
Fats”. A number of delegates from academic Institutions of Turkey, Malaysia and Pakistan as well as
several industrial personnel from Dalda Foods (Pvt.) Ltd, Karachi, Habib Oil Mills and Pakistan Oil Mills
have actively participated in this event. The conference provided a platform for various food chemists,
technologists and researchers to present their research finding reflecting recent trends involved in oil
processing, preserving, quality evaluation/enhancement, health effects and marketing of oils and fats. The
event was sponsored by Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and Co-Sponsored by Pakistan
Science Foundation and COMSTECH.

NCEAC has initiated a Laboratory Safety Programme to aware the research scholars from

continuation of that; Dr. Amber R. Solangi, Assistant Professor of NCEAC has delivered a talk
on Safe Laboratory Practices. Her lecture was mainly focused on basic rules of safety essential
for working in a chemistry laboratory. She has also demonstrated a practical use of Fire
Extinguishers. Dr. Solangi has urged students to adopt safety rules as their habits just to avoid
any accident/injury in their labs.

A 5-day workshop on “Analytical Chromatography of Small Molecule: Practical Skills Development
Workshop” was scheduled from 23-27 May 2011. A total of 10 participants belonging to different
Universities/Institutes attended the workshop; which includes Defense Science Technology Organization
Islamabad, SUPARCO Institute of Technical Training Karachi, Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam
and Department of Plant Protection, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam. The workshop focused on
Gas Chromatography and Liquid Chromatography, comprised of total 8 lectures and rest of the time was
devoted to experimental work. Participants were provided opportunity to put hands on instruments for
real learning.

Two faculty members; Ms. Huma Ishaq and Mr. Mudasir Arain and a student Ms. Tahira Qureshi of
NCEAC attended a five days workshop on “ LC-MS, GC-MS and AAS, the Powerful Analytical
Techniques” at National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Faisalabad. The workshop
focused on the principles, practical experimentation and data analysis of above mentioned techniques. It
also imparted knowledge about sample selection, preparation and analysis, equipment calibration, tuning
and optimization of process parameters and data interpretation with reaction forecast.
