The Art of Walking
Whether you stroll, march, stride or saunter, there’s something wonderful about going for a
walk. You are out in the fresh air, having some exercise and quite possibly seeing, hearing and smelling things that you never have before, even if you take the same route every day. In the winter in Cornwall, and all year round in fact, those of us with four-legged companions are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to walking our dogs. There are miles of deserted beaches and beautiful coast paths to explore right on our doorstep.
Many of us who love walking daydream about packing a bag, planning a route and setting off on an exciting new journey by foot. Sasha Harding, an artist in search of some new inspiration for an upcoming show, decided three years ago that it was time to do just that. However, instead of a weekend ramble, she embarked on a walk of epic proportions. With her reluctant Ridgeback Jess as her sidekick, she hiked the whole of the South West Coast Path. Yes, all six hundred and thirty miles of it.
“It was all about finding inspiration and
subject matter for my paintings and I barely gave the logistics or my lack of fitness a thought at first,” she says. “I soon found out that walking the entire SWCP is equivalent to climbing Mount Everest four times, it is no Sunday afternoon stroll! I also discovered that as well as one of the longest, it is one the most diverse national trails in this country, taking in two world heritage sites and the stunning Jurassic coast.”
Sasha has lived and worked in Cornwall since she completed her Fine Art Degree at Falmouth School of Art in 1996. She was born and raised on the south coast of Dorset and it’s clear that her love of the outdoors and her creativity are closely linked.
“Walking the coast and being in or by the sea has become a daily ritual for me and my dogs,” she says. “For me walking and painting go hand in hand, one feeds off the other. I get most of my ideas while walking and if I am struggling in the studio I will head for the coast to clear my head.”
A decade ago Sasha read a book about a man and his dog walking the coast

Seeing the suffering of refugees fleeing Libya and Syria splashed across the pages of our newspapers, television screens and social media often creates the feeling of helplessness amongst many, but for some it spurs them on to take action. Mark Pugh investigates the growing number of Cornwall based groups and individuals taking action in support of the
refugees in Calais and further afield.
