My place / your place
The tableland above the farmstead lies about 600
metres above sea level. Along its western edge is a
vertical belt of crags that cannot be scaled. The
wall of rock is home to a bustling community of
seabirds, mostly kittiwakes and fulmars, and the
traffi c is dense. A hiker must follow a sheep’s trail
along the hillside, far into the valley, in order to
skirt the stone wall and climb up onto the plateau.
It is a rocky path in places; the land underfoot is
damp and criss-crossed with brooks and streams.
The plateau is broad, massive; it affords a view of
the entire Breiðafjördur bay, with its
innumerable skerries, and far beyond, to
Barðaströnd and the highland outback of the West
Fjords. In fl ight or from a perch a few metres away,
two sea eagles watch the woman as she makes her way
southward along the tableland.

The snow-white milk stands in a jug made of
light-yellowish earthenware. The potter, in his
time, has coated the jug, within and without, with an
iron-rich clay mixture and then —
while the red clay was still damp — painted it on the
outside with thinnish copper oxide and kaolin.
The colours are rusty reds, copper greens, and whites
that have blended with one another here and there.
The materials manage to retain their singular
clarity; they form a sort of marbled delta pattern.
After the fi rst fi ring, the form is again layered with
clear glaze within and without, which throws the
freshness of the colours into relief while
enhancing the durability of the jug; giving it a
glossy fi nish. The second fi ring and the glaze make it
a perfect vessel for the milk, sound, tight and cool.
