MYWEEKLYPREVIEW.COM.AU MY WEEKLY PREVIEW \ NOVEMBER 8, 2013 [ 7 ]

Are you the type of home owner who drags the overfl owing wheelie bins out onto the street a few days

before bin night, surreptitiously throwing a bag or two into your neighbours’ bins once the sun has gone down because yours is already jam-packed? I think we’ve all been guilty of that, especially around Christmas or after a big night.

But have you ever thought about where all those bottles, leftovers, sagging carrots and cereal boxes end up? This week we have, and Sam Walker has been on the case to f nd out just how much waste our little region generates, and what the council and other organisations are doing about it. Most of us rarely think of our rubbish after we hear it being f ung into the council’s garbage trucks, but luckily there are some who do. So turn the page and educate yourself, then head to your

local hardware store and buy yourself a compost bin if you don’t already have one. After reading Sam’s story, I certainly have a different relationship with my rubbish.

For a change in direction, this week we have a special eight-page travel feature, to celebrate Suncoast Travel’s 40th birthday. It’s a good time to plan your next holiday, and over on page 34 we have a few ideas to help get you in the mood.

If your mood is closer to home, in My Property Preview this week we are taking a nosey around some of the Coast’s most prestigious properties for sale. Whether you’re seriously in the market to upgrade or you just want to dream, head over to page 44. And f nally if you’re stuck for something to do this weekend, our my time section is where you want to go. Grab your diary and prepare to f ll it, over on page 29.

4 DAY FORECAST

SURF REPORTWith Steve Harris from Suburban SurfThis week still looks pretty sad in the hope for a long overdue swell. From Tuesday to Thursday there is an inconsistent E/SE ground swell with waves only around the one to two-foot mark. Winds through to Friday will be tending northerly with lighter NW in the morning. Spots to check would be the open beaches for more swell early, then the northerly corners in the arvos. Saturday has a southerly change

with SW winds early, followed by a SE change. However, waves will be even smaller Saturday around the half to one-foot mark. Hopefully there is a small southerly ground swell predicted to build for Sunday arvo. So hit the open beaches. However, winds will be from the E/NE, making it a bit messy. High tide is between mid-morning and lunchtime all this week and the water temp is still sitting around the 20-degree mark. A spring suit for the early morning is

a good call. Good surfing and here’s hoping for at least some rideable waves.

About 280,000 tonnes of material is sent to Sunshine Coast landfi lls each year.

Half of that consists of organic matter and a staggering 20 per cent is estimated to be food waste.

Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says waste is a huge issue for local governments and it is crucial we minimise the quantities we put into the ground. Logically, that involves recycling.

Next week, November 11 to 17, is National Recycling Week.

While Australia has made great inroads to recycling, we are far from world leaders.

But Jamieson is hoping that will change.“People don’t understand the sort of quantum

and the cost of dealing with all that waste and the very real desire on our part to be Australia’s most sustainable region,” he says.

Those who think it is too hard and can’t be done should look to examples like Sweden, where only four per cent of waste is sent to landf ll each year and San Francisco, which has introduced mandatory recycling and composting to achieve zero waste by 2020.

“We’ve got around 15 years of life left in our landf lls, so we need to be preparing pretty soon,” Jamieson says.

“At some point in the not-too-distant future we’re going to need to identify a new site or sites and nobody wants one near them.”

Waste management is one of the council’s biggest expenses, with collection costing in excess of $25 million and disposal nearly as much again. A new landf ll site is expected to cost in the vicinity of $20 million.

Residents are largely unaware of the negative consequences of organic waste – household food and garden waste – which was evident with the backlash seen over the council’s plan to make green waste bins mandatory.

[ C O V E R S T O R Y ]

Clean up your actIT’S NOT THAT HARD TO REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE, AND IT’S MORE

IMPORTANT THAN EVER, WRITES SAM WALKER.

When organic matter rots in landf ll, it gives off methane gas, which is 20 times more potent than CO2.

Jamieson says community education is a big part of changing people’s attitudes to waste and recycling.

Phyllis Araneo, a University of the Sunshine Coast academic fellow in the faculty of science, health, education and engineering, organised the screening last month of the documentary Trashed, about the global human waste issue.

“We really need to be aware of our impact and trash is a big output of being human,” Araneo says.

Her students are very receptive to the information she teaches and keen to make changes.

“It’s not easy to be aware,” she says.“I teach this information with a very positive

spin because I believe in the power of the individual to make a difference.”

She says change begins at the point of purchase and people need to consciously think about the items they buy, whether they need them and how sustainable they are.

Jamieson says the council has introduced a number of innovative programs, including methane gas extraction at one closed and three open landf ll sites.

The methane is converted to CO2 giving a 20:1 reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with hopes it will eventually be used to produce electricity.

While people understand recycling cans, bottles, paper and cardboard, he says so much more can be recycled.

“At the end of the day you need to be thinking about ‘what will I do to minimise my waste’.

“Regrettably there are probably not enough people totally committed to make that happen.”

Australian households throw out $8 billion of edible food each year, costing the average household $1036. That equates to 4 million tonnes of food thrown away annually.

Worms DownUnderWhat started as a backyard hobby has turned into a fl ourishing recycling business for husband and wife team Pene Mitchell and Paul Harrey.

But it is not your everyday paper, cardboard and aluminium cans this innovative Palmwoods couple is focusing on. They are helping Australians turn their food waste and organic matter into compost.

They own and operate Worms DownUnder, supplying worm farms in retro-f tted wheelie bins to residents, businesses and schools across Australia.

“At the moment the average household bin will have about 60 per cent organic waste,” Mitchell says.

Worms are a simple way of reducing the waste we send to landf ll and minimising the methane gas organic waste produces in landf ll.

While the bulk of their clientele is from across Australia, she says they had a one-off order from Egypt, a nation that produces masses of organic waste and has depleted the soil to the point where there are no worms.

They are also talking with several countries about waste minimisation.

An increasing number of inquiries from organisations wanting something to handle large-scale waste led to the development of OSCA (On-site Composting Apparatus).

“We looked around for something for large waste and there was nothing in Australia so we thought we’d better develop it,” Mitchell says.

Harrey, a design engineer, came up with OSCA, a large-scale composter suitable for handling large quantities of organic waste.

The composter is manufactured at their Palmwoods premises with the majority of components sourced locally.

The University of the Sunshine Coast has bought one, another is located at Mt Buller and there is growing interest from around the nation.

“We can’t keep up,” Mitchell says of the increasing inquiries.

They have just sold one to a large apartment and shopping complex in Darwin.

1. Compost and/or get a worm farm.2. Use your yellow-lid recycle bin properly.3. Recycle clean plastic shopping bags at

Woolworths and Coles.4. Choose products with less packaging.5. Sort your waste properly before dumping.6. Recycle your old/unused medicines.8. Don’t buy things you don’t need.

Some leading examplesSweden: Only four per cent of waste goes to landf ll. Under Sweden’s waste-to-energy program, rubbish is burned to generate heat and electricity. San Francisco: The US city has a zero waste policy, which aims to achieve zero waste by 2020. San Francisco’s mandatory recycling and composting has increased organics collection by 50 per cent to more than 600 tonnes per day.

The council receives 280,000 tonnes of material each year and 32% of that is recycled. The Sunshine Coast’s waste collection costs in excess of $25 million a year. Our landf ll has about 15 years of life left in it.The cost of building a new landf ll site is about $20 million.Stuff ng from recycled mattresses is used in punching bags.Reducing green waste dumped in general waste could increase landf ll life by 15 to 20%.The average waste bin consists of 25% recyclables and 50% organic material.About 15% (14,000) of households use a green waste bin.Methane gas capture has been installed at Coast landf ll sites with hopes it will eventually be used to produce electricity.

e-waste For the past six years Jared Cangelosi has been recycling e-waste from schools, businesses and residents across the Coast. Cangelosi, who owns Specialist Computer Team Computer Recycling, says he recycles anything IT related, including desktop and laptop computers, screens, external hard drives, all computer components as well as cords and cables. “Up to 95 per cent of a desktop PC is actually recyclable,” he says.

His aim is to divert as much as possible from going to landf ll, while also ensuring data security for people and businesses getting rid of old computers. The computer technician’s recycling business took off when he started accumulating too much equipment and he thought there must be a better option than sending it to landf ll. He salvages what he can use and takes the rest to specialist recyclers such as scrap metal outlets.

You can contact Cangelosi on 0417 634 651 or [email protected] for details on how and where to dispose of your e-waste.

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s new waste management system has achieved a massive 75 per cent decrease in waste going to landfi ll.

The recycling from the desktop program was introduced in July and is gradually being

rolled out across the campus.USC operations and project off cer Paul

Camilleri says standard desk bins have been replaced with mini-bins on desktops throughout four campus buildings.

Each person sorts his or her own waste, putting it into one of four bins – general waste, compost, paper and cardboard or recycling – stationed in communal areas.

“In essence, I suppose everyone is taking the responsibility themselves,” Camilleri says.

And the results have been impressive.“Within a week or so in each building, there

has been a 75 per cent reduction in general waste,” he says. “That means that most of what was once included in our general waste is now going to the other streams of organic, paper or recyclables.”

But the positives don’t end there.

He says the cleaners have embraced the new system and see themselves as waste managers and get greater satisfaction from their job.

There are obvious environmental benef ts from recycling more items and there are enormous cost savings for the university in terms of waste removal.

Some unexpected positives include cleaners having to bend over less to empty desk bins, increased hygiene from not having food scraps in desk bins and a reduction in the use of plastic bin liners.

Camilleri says the cleaner has calculated that in just one building, 6000 bin liners would usually be used in desk bins each year. “That’s 6000 bin liners not going to landf ll,” he says.

When that f gure is multiplied across the whole university, the results are staggering.

“With the compost, we added that bin into the system because we now realise we can be responsible for that and put that into the composter.”

The On-site Composting Apparatus (OSCA), designed by Worms DownUnder, can process up to a tonne of biodegradable waste each week.

Camilleri says the university’s waste reduction and recycling initiatives have been well received and the roll-out will continue across the campus until mid-2014.

Recycling facts:In 2010 Australians recycled 67% of aluminium cans, Germans recycled 96% and Americans recycled 58%.

Australians recycled 2,759,595 tonnes of packaging in 2011 – a 68.7% increase from 2003.

947 tonnes of mobile phones and accessories have been recycled, including 6.75 million handsets and batteries.

106,000 tonnes or 16.8 million items of e-waste are disposed of each year – only 10% is recycled.

Second-year photography students from Nambour TAFE are preparing to

host an exhibition of their work as part of Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE’s 2013 Creative Showcase.

The 23 students graduating from the Diploma of Photoimaging have trained in a wide range of disciplines, including studio-based, outdoors, fashion, dark room and design. After spending their second year f nding and developing a niche, student Patrick O’Kane says they are excited to showcase their work to the local community.

“First year was about gaining knowledge and expanding on our capabilities. This year was more about personal development through the utilisation of those skills,” O’Kane says.

He has worked with professional athletes and aims to forge a career helping sportspeople promote themselves via photographic marketing and personal development.

[ 18 ] MY WEEKLY PREVIEW \ NOVEMBER 8, 2013 MYWEEKLYPREVIEW.COM.AU

Sir Richard Branson and Pat Rafter are the latest big names to lend their support to Sunshine Coast Destination’s Make the Most of the Moment campaign.

A joint initiative between SCDL and Tourism Events Queensland, the campaign encourages locals and visitors to put down their smartphones and pay attention to the natural beauty and experiences around them.

While it may seem strange for Branson to be encouraging people to turn off their phones, the Virgin Mobile founder says his Sunshine Coast retreat offers a much-needed escape from technology.

EXPERTS TO BRAINSTORM COAST’S FUTURE

The annual Sunshine Coast Futures Conference taking place today will examine how

the region can make the most of its place in south-east Queensland.

Keynote speakers include Canadian urban planning expert Professor Mario Polese, Brisbane Lord mayor Graham Quirk and one of his predecessors, Sallyanne Atkinson.

Polese, a University of Quebec academic and author of The Wealth and Poverty of Regions, will discuss how geography and location are still signif cant considerations for business owners and policy-makers, even though technology has made the globe seem smaller.

University of the Sunshine Coast pro vice-chancellor for Engagement, professor Mike Hefferan, says Polese’s involvement in the conference is a coup for the region.

“Professor Polese has acted as an advisor to municipal, provincial,

[ L O C A L N E W S ]

federal and international agencies,” Hefferan says.

“Now we can put his extensive knowledge to work for the Sunshine Coast.”

Quirk and Atkinson will discuss how Brisbane views its northern neighbour and suggest ways in which the Sunshine Coast region can grow and develop, while retaining its distinct individuality.

Other guest speakers include Coast mayor Mark Jamieson, former

Visitors to Kondalilla National Park could soon be reaching lofty heights with expressions of interest invited for a zipline canopy tour.

Tourism minister Jann Stuckey says the initiative is a commitment to the future success of nature-based tourism through ecologically responsible partnerships with the private sector.

The f rst stage of the process is to consider concepts for the site, then those shortlisted will submit more detailed proposals.

“We are committed to ensuring our natural areas are managed in a sustainable way so they will remain an asset for future generations of locals and tourists alike” Stuckey says.

Submissions are due by February 28, 2014.

Queensland trade commissioner Andrew Craig and author of the regional and infrastructure plan and program for South-East Queensland, Michael Kerry.

Hefferan says the Coast’s relationship with Brisbane and other neighbouring regions is often taken for granted and rarely discussed in detail.

“Delegates to the conference will come away with a much better understanding on how the links, relationships and networks operate and how they can be developed to benef t our f rms, associations, institutions and the region as a whole,” he says.

“In an era increasingly dominated by cities and the rise of urbanisation, this is an agenda that cannot be ignored.”

The conference, organised by USC and the council, will be held at the Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre.

“Makepeace [Island] offers the opportunity for me to reconnect and completely ‘disappear’ into another world,” he says.

“No cars, no clocks, phones or TVs,” Branson adds, saying people are so engaged with their devices they are missing out on real-life experiences, such as meal times with family.

“Next time you are at a restaurant, and unless you’re an on-call transplant surgeon, engage in conversation with the people sitting at the table with you rather than those on the other end of your phone,” he says.

“My tip is to manage your phone,

don’t let it manage you.”Participants can take an online

quiz and upload a photo to go into

FORUM TO TACKLE YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

The cost of the Coast’s high youth unemployment will be addressed as part of

the Sunshine Coast Business Council’s Youth Prosperity Forum next week.

More than 100 Coast employers, dignitaries, community leaders and young people will attend the forum at the Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre, which aims to discuss strategies for preparing young people in the region for the workforce.

Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich says with the region’s youth unemployment rate almost three times higher than the Coast’s overall unemployment rate, action needs to be taken to secure long-term positions for more local young people.

“The Sunshine Coast is currently experiencing a youth unemployment rate of between 17 and 18 per cent, which is particularly alarming when you consider the region’s overall unemployment rate sits at around 6.7 per cent,” Zubrinich says.

“This unfortunately has a range of negative social, health and

economic impacts on the local community, with research showing that unemployed young people living on the Sunshine Coast experience higher rates of depression, anxiety and self-harming behaviours.

“It is also apparent that of those youth who are neither employed nor studying, 37 per cent are living below the poverty line.”

Zubrinich says the statistics paint a worrying picture for the Coast and with challenges faced by the construction, retail and tourism industries, it is understandable employment opportunities have been limited.

The forum will include presentations from a wide range of researchers and industry leaders to champion youth support initiatives,

Starting at 10am, there will be catwalk parades showcasing new spring and summer collections from the markets’ fl agship fashion labels, including Marmilade, Lime Zest and Abby Rose Bikinis. QUEENSLAND WEEK 2014The Coast will host two of 15 new State Government-sponsored events next June as part of Queensland Week 2014.The Buderim Youth Festival will be held at Buderim Village Park featuring live music, stalls and displays. Locals can also Celebrate Queensland Week at Eumundi Markets with a proclamation re-enactment, free morning tea, thong toss and pineapple throwing competitions, pig races and more.

NOOSA VOTES AGAINNoosa residents will go to the polls on Saturday to vote for representatives on the new Noosa Council. Only voters who live in divisions 11 and 12 of the Sunshine Coast Council area will need to vote. Then new Noosa Council will take effect on January 1.

STARTING OVER AFTER THE NSW FIRES

When the local fi reman saw the Hughes house going up in fl ames, he raced in, grabbed two mosaic artworks and

threw them in the fi re truck. Those two tiles are now priceless, Caitlin

Hughes says. It’s all that remains from the family’s home in Winmalee, in the Blue Mountains, after the devastating bushf res burnt through the area on that hot and gusty Thursday in October.

Caitlin and Peter Hughes, and their two children Oliver f ve, and Sienna, four, are now living in a rental home.

[ N A T I O N A L N E W S ]

TASMANIAN Greenpeace activist Colin Russell, who is being held in jail in Russia, says there would be outrage if prisoners were

kept in similar conditions in Australia.Russell, 59, is one of 28 international activists

and two journalists who have been detained by Russian investigators for piracy and hooliganism charges, which carry sentences of up to 15 years.

The group was detained in the arctic city of Murmansk but may be moved to St Petersburg.

In a letter to his wife Christine and daughter Madeleine, Russell, who is kept in his cell for 23 hours a day, describes the below-freezing conditions in Murmansk.

He says the iron bars on his bed cut into his back and he has lost weight due to poor food quality.

“They don’t give you anything at all. I am OK with it but there would be outrage if this was at home,” Russell wrote.

“I do not want to think of what happens if you are convicted. God knows what they do with the real crims.” AAP

Russian jail conditions outrageous

They spent the f rst few days in a hotel and then house-hopping at friends. Now that the family are in their rental home, Caitlin says Oliver and Sienna are more settled. “They have been very upset. Everything from terrible behaviour, not sleeping, cranky and irritable.”

The family ran from their home with their clothes on their backs and their laptops, losing wedding photos, baby photos and family heirlooms.

Caitlin says the support from charities has been amazing with all the donations of clothes, linen and toys.

Caitlin and Peter bought their brick home three years ago, and had just f nished $40,000 of renovations. Not only did they lose their home, but their businesses as well.

While her husband lost many documents, he has been able to set himself up in his business again because his data was backed up. Caitlin lost all her stock and two studios.

Having received their insurance money, Caitlin and Peter will rebuild a home, following all the new building codes that are being put in place.

When she gets time, Caitlin says she’ll take up the counselling that has been offered to victims. “I’m determined not to give up and to make this work, and I’m going to come out of it better than I went in,” she says. AAP

MEET IPPO THE WORLD’S FIRST ‘ZONKEY’

An act of love between Martin the zebra and Giada the donkey in the romantic Italian city of Florence has produced

a rare ‘zonkey’ baby that is drawing crowds to an exotic animal shelter.

Three-month-old Ippo is already a star and the owners of the farm say they have received requests for rights over his image, including one from a soft-toy company and another from Disney to make a cartoon.

“It is very rare that a zebra and a donkey mate and reproduce,” Serena Aglietti, the daughter of the shelter’s owner, said at the site in central Florence, near the city’s landmark monuments.

The family-run Aglietti farm takes in animals rescued from circuses or owners who treat them badly and houses a motley array of 170 animals including camels, llamas and Vietnamese pigs.

Aglietti explained that on one balmy night last year, Martin – who was taken away from a zoo where he was being abused years ago – jumped over the fence of his enclosure.

The lusty Martin used his snout to lift the latch on a stable door where the donkeys were being kept. There he consummated his love for Giada, a rare Italian Amiata donkey brought to the clinic to be bred.

No one realised what had happened until 12 months later – the length of a donkey pregnancy.

“We were there at the birth. First the black hooves came out, then the striped legs. We were amazed,” Aglietti said.

“He is doing well. He is naughty but is very sweet with children, he is still on milk but also eating carrots.”

The unusual sight at the farm brings hundreds of visitors, who compete for Ippo’s attention and take pictures on smartphones.

Ippo still looks very much like a zebra-donkey mix – with the stripey legs of a zebra but a donkey’s face. Ippo is off cially a ‘zebroid’ – the name for a cross between a zebra and any other equine. AFP

Shamsia Husseini listens as one of her students reads a school book at a Kandahar school

WHEN attackers threw acid in Shamsia Husseini’s face outside her school, she defi ed them by returning to class. Now she has struck another blow for female education by becoming a teacher herself.

Shamsia suffered severe burns on her eyelids and cheeks in the 2008 assault, which generated global publicity.

One man, wearing a mask, asked Shamsia if she was going to school. Then he tore off her veil and pumped acid from a spray gun onto her face.

Five years on, Shamsia, now aged 22, is still in the classroom – but now she stands in front of an energetic bunch of nine and 10-year-old girls.

Shamsia’s scars eventually healed well after treatment at hospitals in Kabul and New Delhi, but she has recurring problems with blurred vision and eye pain.

“It was very important for me to become a teacher as it shows people that the attackers did not win, just like we came back to school after the attack,” she says. AFP

One Tooth Missing Solution

When a tooth is missing the adjacent teeth can drift into this space making a one tooth solution very diffi cult.

With the introduction of fl exible dentures, nobody has to know that you are missing teeth. We can offer this solution for singular or multiple teeth.

No surgical procedure is required for the construction of this fl exible denture and it can be quite small and discreet. They actually blend in with your natural dentition so that it appears invisible in your mouth.

The Flexibility of the partial allows

the denture to adapt to the surrounding teeth in the mouth.

This is the underlying thinking behind a fl exible, removable partial denture. The fl exibility, combined with strength and light weight, provides total comfort and great looks!

If you are in a private health fund you may be able to claim a portion of the cost.

Why not give us a call today to organise a Free Consultation to see if this solution will work best for you.

PATIENCE PROVES PROFITABLE

This statement may surprise you, but accumulating wealth is easy. It may

not seem so easy, but if you constantly remind yourself about the power of compound interest it can be a lot easier.

Compound interest is interest earned on interest. The longer you own an investment, if the earnings are reinvested, then the greater the asset that is creating earnings. Consider an investment that earns 10 per cent. Assuming the earnings are reinvested, it will take seven years for the investment to double in value, 11.5 years to triple in value, and 14.5 years to quadruple.

Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

It would take 24 years to increase 10-fold in value.

However, many people do not benef t from the magic of compound interest. But this should not be, given the long-term returns of both share and property markets. The principal reason for this is the ‘get rich quick’ mentality, or in other words a lack of patience. Many investors grow impatient at seeing their wealth grow slowly. They move from investment to investment, seeking the holy grail of fast, but typically unsustainable, growth. Some simply get bored and pull out.

The second reason is a mix of overconf dence and lack of education. A typical example of this is the explosion of day traders who attempt to trade the market using instruments ranging from shares to options, futures and CFDs.

Ultimately the typical trader f nds such strategies lead to long-term wealth destruction, not to wealth creation.

[ B U S I N E S S & F I N A N C E ]

Empirical research in America has found that traders do a poor job of timing the market, typically achieving less than half the available returns.

Fidelity has done some research showing that an investor who placed $10,000 in the S&P500 from 1980 to 2012 ended up with a portfolio of $332,502 compared to $215,273 by missing the f ve best days in that period. Anyone who thinks they’re smart enough to time things and be invested on those f ve top days is suffering from clear overconf dence issues.

So while we all know about compound interest, many people never experience its wonders. What’s needed is discipline, quality investments and a plan for growth.

[ A G E N D A ]

As the long, painful process of rebuilding lives and property after

the October bushfi res gets underway, Phil Koperberg has Christmas on his mind.

The former Rural Fire Service commissioner and NSW minister is leading the recovery effort in the Blue Mountains, a place he has called home for more than 40 years.

He understands that for many of the 203 families who lost their homes to the ferocious f res around Springwood, Lithgow and Mount

Victoria, new pain will come as Christmas approaches.

“For people who traditionally have everyone at their house for Christmas, they’ll be thinking, ‘how do we do that this year?’” Koperberg says. “That will add a new dimension of tension. There’s that to worry about and help them through.”

But his immediate concern, two weeks after the emergency f ared, is f nding the people affected so they can get the help they need.

A hotline has been set up for bushf re victims to register, but it’s

Out of the ashesAS BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS REBUILD THEIR

LIVES, TOURISTS ARE URGED TO RETURN.

estimated 20 per cent are yet to call.Registering with the hotline

will provide access to assistance and help address some of the most pressing issues.

One of these is the asbestos lurking in the rubble, a danger Koperberg is determined to remove for everyone no matter their level of insurance. “We are not going to leave them high and dry with nowhere to go. One way or another we will facilitate asbestos removal,” he says.

The level of insurance held by different households will largely dictate how soon new homes will begin to rise from the ashes.

Utility companies have been quick to get on with the job of restoring gas, water, power and communications to the suburbs and insurers are also being helpful.

But when the tradies get the all-clear from contamination threats, they will be building homes that may not resemble the ones lost.

Stringent building codes will mean the suburbs of Winmalee and Springwood, which were worst-hit by the f res, will look very different the next time around.

The codes ensure homes in f re-prone areas are made from safer materials, and touch on everything, right down to the f yscreens.

Blue Mountains MP Roza Sage says they will add from $30,000 to $100,000 to rebuilding.

She wants ‘green tape’ around vegetation removal to be cut – not

only to make people feel safer, but because it will lessen the need for other f reproof ng on the new homes.

“The greater the cleared area you have, the less you have to do because it’s seen as less of a f re hazard,” she says.

She knows at least one resident who will move to an already built home in the area rather than taking on the expense of building again.

But she agrees most want to return to their old streets.

“The vast majority of people want to stay in the area, why not?” she says. “It’s a great community and a beautiful place to live.”

Koperberg, too, feels the bushf re building codes will make already strong communities feel even safer.

But he concedes the additional costs may mean people will have smaller homes this time around.

“I’m urging people to think carefully about what they want, to build on that land in such a way as to give them safeguards so they don’t have to spend the rest of their lives worrying about the next f re event.”

With Blue Mountains businesses reporting that people are cancelling their Christmas getaways, Koperberg is urging people to take the time to visit the mountains over the festive season.

“All of the parks and tourist attractions are open, and deserving of support as the region gets back on its feet,” he says. AAP

55minutes with…Amie Louise GreenHead chef, LOT104

What’s your go-to meal at home? It’s normally a late-night thing – gourmet toasted sandwich. Anything goes. One of my favourites is sourdough, prosciutto, tomato, a quality cheddar, aioli, rocket and loads of butter.

What’s the best advice anyone ever gave you? Put your head down and work hard. Never wait for things to happen, make them happen for yourself through hard work and never giving up. Never regret anything, instead move on.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve ever cooked for? I’ve had the pleasure of cooking with/for some very interesting people: Andrew McConnell, Joseph Vargetto, David Chang, Gordon Ramsay. But the most interesting person I’ve ever cooked for would have to be Monique Goodworth. She has worked for me for years now. I taught her almost everything I know; she is the craziest, most interesting chef and best friend I could ask for. It’s never a dull day with Mon.

What’s the best part of being a chef? If I had to choose one, I would have to say pursuing food

knowledge. I fi nd food absolutely fascinating; the slightest change in fl avour, texture and seasoning can be the difference between an okay dish and some of the best food ever. I also like the instant gratifi cation you get when a customer absolutely loves your dish.

What task do you love being able to hand over to the apprentice and why? There is no task I wouldn’t do myself in the kitchen; I’m very hands on and love every part of my job. If we had an apprentice – yes we are looking – I would hope to inspire them to believe everything we do is great – yes, even picking the herbs, peeling the onions and scrubbing the dirty potatoes.

This year, renowned travel agency Suncoast Travel celebrates its 40th

anniversary on the Sunshine Coast. Originally trading as Swire

Suncoast Travel, the iconic agency opened its doors in Alexandra Headland in 1973 with the backing of John Swire and Sons.

After a change of ownership in 1977 the new board of directors decided to move to premises in Ocean Street, and Suncoast Travel has been in the Centrepoint Arcade ever since.

At the time of the move, Sandy Innes had just been appointed as manager, and she and her husband were also offered a shareholding in the business. Innes remained with the agency until she retired in 2005 and says she saw many changes in the travel industry during that time.

“I started in the industry when I was 16,” she says. “All the reservations were recorded on a card in pencil, so that we could rub it out and use the

Taking a trip down memory lanecard again. I had to phone the reservation through to Ansett or TAA [Trans Australia Airlines], and had to get f ve bookings made within the three minutes.”

To book a f ight you needed a passenger’s full name, date of travel, f ight number and time, and all reservations had to be recorded manually. Innes once visited the Ansett head off ce, where all f ights scheduled were recorded on a large whiteboard.

“They would cross out the f ights as they arrived, and just change the f ight number,” she says. The same went for remaining seats. There was also no discounting of airfares allowed.

“All the international airfares were set by the IATA board in Geneva, and we lost our licence if the tickets weren’t issued correctly,” she says.

Of course, one of the biggest changes Innes saw within the industry was the introduction of technology.

However, even though people can now research and book their travel online, current manager Anna Powell says well-established agencies like Suncoast Travel offer services the internet simply cannot provide.

“What we’ve found is that the people who come to us are usually quite educated about where they are going and what they want to do, but at the end of the day they want someone to put it all together,” Powell says. This might involve currency conversion, calculating relevant levies and taxes, or simply booking a hotel on the right side of town.

“You might book a hotel in Paris that looks great, but it could be in the middle of the red light district, and you don’t know the neighbourhood so you’re too scared to go outside,” she says.

“You come to us and we do it all, but you’ve also got somewhere to call if things go wrong – if you’ve booked online and your f ight gets

cancelled you can’t call the internet.”

The agency’s f ve staff also have broad expertise, and long-standing team members Leesa Assaillit, Raynor Heron and Chris Chong have a combined 60 years’ service. Powell says the team all travel extensively and can offer clients specialised knowledge and peace of mind.

Many of the people who booked a holiday with Innes when she f rst joined the agency are still clients today, and Powell – who booked her own honeymoon through Suncoast Travel before she started in the industry – says now their children and grandchildren

Antarctica specialists Chimu Adventures is offering the chance for budding

adventurers to retrace the steps of one of history’s greatest explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton.

In 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton led an expedition to cross the continent of Antarctica from sea to sea. However, en route his ship, Endurance, became frozen in an ice f oe, stranding Shackleton and his crew.

What followed was one of history’s greatest survival stories, in which Shackleton and his men crossed the world’s roughest seas in open life boats and traversed the most inhospitable of terrains. Incredibly, not one crew member was lost, many owing their lives to Shackleton’s survival instinct.

To celebrate the epic journey, Sunshine Coast-based Chimu Adventures has launched an Antarctica cruise on board the

Sea Adventurer, departing Ushuaia in southern Argentina on February 24, 2014. The Sea Adventurer underwent a $13 million conversion in 1998 and is the perfect expedition ship for those who enjoy adventures with their creature comforts.

The 16-day cruise will retrace Shackleton’s expedition, visiting the island of South Georgia, his f nal resting place, as well as the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. The ship’s zodiacs will also attempt a landing on Elephant Island, the starting point of Shackelton’s 800-nautical mile journey in an open life boat to South Georgia.

On board the Sea Adventurer, passengers will also be entertained by a few special guests, including Australian TV presenter Andrew Denton and award-winning artists Wendy Sharpe and Bernard Ollis.

“I am a self-professed Antarctica enthusiast,” Denton says about the upcoming adventure. “So far I have visited the white continent four times, and I can’t wait to go again. There’s a wilderness to Antarctica

which is very exciting, the scenery, light and wildlife are ever changing.”

Sharpe adds, “This will be my second journey to Antarctica as an artist in residence. I’m very much looking forward to capturing different aspects of the landscape’s fascinating scenery and wildlife.”

Funds raised by the cruise will be donated to the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, which helps conserve the historic huts used by Australian Explorer Douglas Mawson in Cape Denison.

Chimu Adventures director Chad Carey says, “We are very excited about this trip given the historical signif cance of Shackleton’s journey in 1914 and what eventuated to be one of mankind’s greatest survival stories. To be able to celebrate this centenary on a trip with a number of prominent Australians who have a strong connection to Antarctica is even more exciting. Above that, we will also raise some signif cant funds for Mawson’s Huts Foundation which ties in nicely with Chimu Adventures’ community and sustainably focus.”

Australia is so close to the Pacifi c Islands, and there is still much of this paradise to

discover. P&O Cruises visits more Pacifi c Island ports than any other cruise line, so it’s a great choice for travellers who want to visit this untouched corner of the world.

P&O has 43 tropical destinations to choose from. Passengers can take in varied experiences, from the French-inspired architecture of Nouméa in New Caledonia, to the ancient culture of Wala in Vanuatu.

P&O Cruises is always on the lookout for great destinations to add to the itineraries, and in 2012 it added a number of unique ports. There’s the

beautiful island of Maré in New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands. It is a place of incredible beauty, and a culture that stretches back more than 40,000 years. Maré is exclusive to P&O and is fast becoming a favourite destination for passengers.

As well as this, P&O Cruises recently became the f rst cruise liner company to visit the Milne Bay Provence of Papua New Guinea; its f ve different ports offering everything from nature and history, to culture and scenery.

The Pacif c Islands are the undisputed favourite destination for Australian cruisers, with more and more people visiting every year.

Step back in time on the Inca Trail

I recently fulfi lled a lifelong dream and ticked an item off my bucket list by walking in the

footsteps of the Incas along the famous Inca Trail to the Lost City of the Incas – Machu Picchu.

Ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you I am not much of a camper – my husband says I will sleep under the stars only if there are f ve of them. So living rough for four days is not my usual idea of a good time, but as long as I’ve known that I wanted to visit Machu Picchu, I’ve known that I needed to get there the same way the Incas did all those years ago – on foot.

I settled on a tour which allowed us plenty of time to acclimatise at altitude before embarking on the trail, as well as giving us an extra night at the end of the hike in the town of Aguas Calientes, at the base of Machu Picchu, to allow plenty of time to explore the ruins – I didn’t

WORDS Anna Powell

spend four days tramping up and down mountains (two of those days in the pouring rain) to jump on the f rst train back to civilisation as soon as I arrived.

The Inca Trail didn’t disappoint. The f rst day and a half were hot and dusty, as we ascended the foothills from Ollantaytambo, but as we reached the highest point of the trail – the ominously named Dead Woman’s Pass – it got steadily colder and the rain came just as we got to the summit, which made for a slippery descent down the other side. The upside to being cold and wet was the ethereal feeling of being ‘above the clouds’ as we made our way into camp that night.

Walking on day three was slow, as the altitude leaves you panting at the slightest exertion. But it just forces you to take it slowly and enjoy the diverse environment. Our camp for the third night was spectacular –

perched on a ridge at 3600 metres and shrouded in mist with a small herd of llamas as our neighbours.

The early rain on day four cleared as we started down the 1509 stairs and by the time we ascended the last few hundred metres, the sun was shining and we got our f rst glimpse of our destination from the Inti Punku (Sun Gate).

The Inca period lasted only around 90 years before the Spanish arrived, but they achieved so much – the city of Machu Picchu is a marvel in terms of architecture, defence and government. The Incas had no

written language – much of what we know about them is educated speculation, so we don’t know why the city was abandoned.

Machu Picchu exceeded my expectations. Peru is a safe, friendly and fascinating place. The food is good and inexpensive (although I had to draw the line at roasted guinea pig). If you’re planning to walk the Inca Trail, book well in advance – you need a permit and numbers are restricted. The best time to trek is in the dry season of May to September, but it’s cold, so you’ll need your f uffy llama beanie!

Where you’ll see things others might miss.

Experience the real Europe

Every Europe trip should include the icons: the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, Big

Ben. But what if you want to experience more than just the major sights?

In 2014, guided holiday expert Trafalgar is offering enhanced itineraries, taking travellers even deeper into destinations on its 104 European holidays.

When you ‘go guided’, seeing the icons is guaranteed. But the staff at Trafalgar don’t just tick off the sights. For 67 years, they’ve been unearthing unique insights and locals with personal stories and connections who give guests VIP entry at famous attractions.

At each destination, travellers are introduced to locals who reveal unique traditions and ways of life, like Beatrice, who welcomes visitors to her 17th century French farm with a warm smile, Loire Valley wine and stories of her noble family. Or Libero, a Florentine chef who teaches travellers how to make fresh pasta dishes. Or the students of Cambridge, who

take you on a punt down the river as they share stories of life at one of Europe’s most historic universities.

Trafalgar’s passionate travel directors open up each destination with shared stories and hidden treasures, bypassing the touristy spots to give you more authentic experiences.

There are also a variety of optional experiences, to personalise a trip. From driving along the Via Veneto in Rome before an Italian dinner, to an evening of Highland dance, haggis and bagpipes in Edinburgh, these add-ons offer even more.

Small details like having your room key ready so you don’t need to check in, having WiFi when it’s available, mixing shared moments with rest time, and of course not having to worry about transport and meals, are all take care of.

DETAILS Five-door, fi ve-seat high-performance SUV with V8 turbo-diesel engine and eight-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive.

TECH STUFF4.2-litre V8 turbo-diesel engine produces 250kW@4000rpm, 800Nm@1750-2750rpm; eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift option and wheel-mounted shift paddles; 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with adjustable air suspension with adaptive damping control.

FEATURESNine airbags, ESP with active rollover protection, hill-descent assist, ABS with emergency brake assist; optional frontal-collision avoidance system; four-zone climate control air-conditioning, Nappa leather trim, electric seats, windows and mirrors with memory function; satellite navigation, premium audio, rear-view camera with front and rear parking audio, adaptive cruise control with optional lane-keeping assist.

PERFORMANCE 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds.

THIRST 9.2L/100km (average combined fi gure).

VERDICT The perfect machine to go anywhere – quickly.

BOTTOM LINE $112,900 (plus on-road costs).

It’s the biggest, most expensive and most powerful machine built by the world’s biggest car maker.

What’s more, its closest relative is a Porsche, which shares an almost identical engine and many of the same components. Yet this car is not what you might expect. It’s not a sports car – at least not a conventional one.

It’s not a limo either. Instead, it’s an SUV, albeit one with a personality that is part luxury car, part sports car, part full-blown off-roader.

Volkswagen’s Touareg R is

WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

surprising, to say the least.Sitting at the top of the VW

Australia price list (at a substantial $113,000) it’s not the kind of fl agship model you’d normally expect from a marque like VW, best known for its sedans and hatchbacks. Yet this classy 4WD sets an enviable benchmark for the German giant.

Like the original Touareg, this second-generation model shares much of its development with the far more glamorous Porsche Cayenne – the very successful SUV from VW’s corporate

stablemate. Key among the elements shared between the Touareg and Cayenne is the glorious 4.2-litre turbo-diesel V8 that provides the heartbeat of this high-performance, low-thirst machine.

The equivalent Cayenne Diesel S, of course, is substantially more powerful, thanks to the talents of those Porsche engineers, but the VW engine is fundamentally the same. And it’s a cracker.

It sounds wonderful, for a start, unlike most diesels. I have to confess

[ M O T O R I N G ]

that I drove the Touareg for a while before it dawned on me that it was a diesel at all, so rich is the burble from its big twin tailpipes, so instant the response when you urge it onward.

The giveaway, of course, is the way its smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission grabs the next ratio earlier than you might otherwise expect in such a powerful machine, keeping that wonderful powerplant constantly in its low-revving sweet spot.

Peak torque – all 800 ground-shifting Newton metres of it – arrives like a torrent from just 1750 revs per minute, meaning this big, strong-armed machine is always poised for action.

It takes less than six seconds to reach the speed limit and that torque gives it overtaking power at virtually any speed.

Finished with a sports body kit and massive alloy wheels, the Touareg looks the part, too – sporty yet purposeful. Its athleticism masks the fact that the Touareg is also a genuine off-roader. It offers the driver a choice of ride heights and transmission settings to counter all but the most treacherous of

off-road conditions. However, unlike some other Touareg models, it does without a dual-range transmission.

Despite the extra weight inherent in this all-wheel-drive and adjustable suspension gadgetry, it’s a remarkably agile and nimble thing. That’s partly helped by the ability to dial up a f rmer, sportier tune on the suspension – or alternatively opt for a softer-riding, more compliant ride depending on your mood.

The Touareg’s practicality extends to cabin space and appointments and is certainly roomy enough, and well-equipped enough, to satisfy f ve full-sized occupants, plus their luggage. And to make life easier there’s the convenience of an electrically operated tailgate, an optical parking system with bird’s eye area view plus front and rear parking sensors.

Cabin presentation is clean and functional, but perhaps lacks some of the wow factor you might expect in a car with this kind of price tag. Still, there’s Nappa leather seats to keep you comfy, four-zone climate-control air-conditioning, electric mirrors with memory function, electric seats and

windows, keyless entry and, of course, a heated steering wheel. Very posh.

It’s a deceptive machine because the engine never seems to be working particularly hard, despite the ever-increasing speed with which the scenery starts to zip past.

The Touareg’s low-down power contributes to its ease of driving in stop-start city driving (there’s also an automatic stop-start system to shut down the engine when stopped, thus saving more fuel) – yet its eight-speed transmission and oodles of torque make it equally at home on the motorway where you can imagine driving it for hours without feeling unduly fatigued.

And, of course, despite that rather surprising and pulse-quickening acceleration, it still manages to return very respectable fuel-eff ciency.

Of course, all of this versatility (not

to mention the Porsche family connection) doesn’t come cheap.

The Touareg R’s $112,900 price tag makes it the most expensive car currently wearing the famous VW badge in Australia – and by quite some margin. It costs almost twice as much as the double the next-most-expensive CC coupe at $66 grand. But compared with its corporate cousin Porsche Cayenne (which admittedly offers more power, more luxury and more prestige), the big VW seems like solid value.

NEW ‘OTTER’ APP DESIGNED TO SAVE LIVES

[ M O T O R I N G ]

Last week the Millsy’s Donation Drive culminated in a draw to give one lucky local the chance to win a $50,000 Toyota FJ Cruiser, donated by Ken Mills Toyota.

Ken Mills Toyota dealer principal Brett Mills says the draw was a great way to round off Millsy’s Donation Drive, which raised close to $30,000 for SunnyKids, a local non-prof t organisation that helps children to stay in school and break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage.

Unfortunately no one was lucky enough to drive away with the car, but the event raised important funds and awareness of the good work done by SunnyKids.

$30K raised for SunnyKids

A driver texting on her mobile phone as she drove through a pedestrian

crossing in Seattle, which was being used by Erik Wood and his three-year-old daughter in 2008, was a near miss he hopes could save lives.

Wood remembers the driver’s wrists were pressed against the steering wheel, her thumbs working the keypad in front of her face and that she never glanced up, as her car blew past them.

He says that near miss brought him face-to-face with the danger posed by distracted drivers.

“I see it like it was yesterday,” Wood says.

“That was when I started thinking, ‘How do we change this behaviour?’”

His answer was the smartphone app OTTER, which he developed with his business partners.

OTTER, which stands for One Touch Text Response, has several tools aimed at keeping

drivers’ eyes on the road. The app’s key function is a

speed-activated, auto-response system for text messages which, when turned on, uses the phone’s GPS to determine when the user is in a moving vehicle.

While the vehicle is on the road, the app turns off alerts and buzzers, and sends the owner’s automatic reply to incoming texts and silences incoming phone calls unless a headset is enabled.

Other options include one-touch text responses and parental controls.

Along with driving, Wood says some customers have found OTTER useful for tuning out texts in meetings, movie theatres and classrooms.

The software is available for download on Android, Blackberry and Nokia devices, but not on Apple’s iPhone, something OTTER is determined to change.

The company launched a Change.org online petition asking Apple to allow the ‘text and drive’

software on the iPhone.Drivers are 23 times more

likely to crash if they text while driving, according to www.distraction.gov, a US government clearing house for distracted driving information.

A 2013 study suggests texting and driving has surpassed drink driving as the leading cause of death among teen drivers.

Wood says curbing the “epidemic” will take the involvement of big technology, car and mobile companies. AAP

If there’s one thing the Sunshine Coast does well, it is aspirational living. The

upper end of our housing market features a wide array of stunning, architecturally designed homes, from sprawling hinterland retreats to minimalist waterfront mansions boasting fl oor-to-ceiling glass.

Karen Jones from Next Property Group specialises in prestige homes and says the top end of the market is experiencing strong levels of interest.

“There’s certainly conf dence at the top end,” Jones says. “Buyers are engaging again with top-end properties – I’ve had good enquiry levels and good numbers through open homes, with lots of locals seeing the value, as well as lots of non-locals.”

This includes buyers from Sydney, Melbourne and Western Australia, as well as expats looking to enter the Australian market. Those buyers are able to see value on the Sunshine Coast, as our top-end prices are extremely affordable compared to Sydney, for example, where the most prestigious properties have been known to sell for upwards of $50,000 per square metre. Jones says buyers are also driven by the limited availability of high-end property on the Coast.

“We have a lot of options but we don’t have a lot of stock – there’s not a lot of properties in those prime positions,” she says. “Our beachfront stock is very limited, our deepwater is very limited, and our walk-to-the- beach locations are still quite limited.

“They’re looking at being able to sell an inferior home [in Sydney or Melbourne], purchase something superior in a prime location and still have change left over at the end of the day.”

Another key driver is local buyers who are currently f nding top-end properties just within their reach for the f rst time.

Jones says two auctions held last weekend both had more than 50 people in attendance (on a beautiful, sunny Sunday, no less), and many local buyers are looking to secure a property before the market takes off.

“Typically when our market lifts it is that prime position, top end of the market that moves the swiftest and has the biggest gains,” she says.

ACROSS DOWN

HOROSCOPESARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Are you bored with the status quo? When the moon’s in Aquarius it stimulates your restless side. So it’s time to stretch yourself in exciting new directions.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Bulls can get stuck in a stifling rut. The Aquarian moon encourages you to broaden your horizons and take on board fresh ideas and alternative points of view, especially at work.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 You’ll feel physically and mentally restless this weekend, so you need to get out and about. Stretch your mind and body as you explore new ideas, friendships and places.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 It could feel like “everybody wants a piece of me!” Resist the pressure to be all things to all people. You’ve got plenty on your plate, so put your head down and get on with it.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 If you’re interested in family history, it’s a great weekend to talk to relatives about ancestry, and dig up surprises about the past. Take the time to write things down.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Avoid getting bogged down in your usual weekend routine. It’s time to enjoy some special connections, as you converse and socialise with family and friends.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 You’re feeling positive and are keen to help others, as you focus on big dreams and grand schemes. With Venus visiting your domestic zone, it’s a great weekend to entertain.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 The moon is moving through your domestic zone so it’s time to enjoy the comforts of home. With Mars in your hopes and wishes zone, congratulate yourself on how far you’ve come.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Unresolved problems from the past could come back to test you. Make a commitment to resolve these issues once and for all. Then you can wipe the slate clean and move on.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 The focus is on financial matters. If you are positive, proactive and productive – plus get some cracking professional advice – then you’ll create a comfortable nest egg for the future.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Your boredom threshold is set on low and you don’t have the patience to put up with boring people or long explanations. Strive to extricate yourself from such situations in a tactful way.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Pluto and Venus are visiting your hopes and wishes zone, so aim to be passionately creative about your dreams and goals for the future. Plus strive to collaborate with like-minded souls.

4-DAY FORECAST

FISHING REPORTwith Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

Okay folks there is not much on offer this weekend but it should be a lot of fun down at Happy Valley for beginners and the kids. Kawana will be hosting the Board Meeting surf competition, which is a great event that helps disabled children, so come down for a laugh. If that is not your thing drop into the Kawana Surf Club from around midday for the surf auction – there could be a couple of cheap boards on offer. All money raised goes to the kids, so it is a worthy cause. Well, everyone is waiting for the Pipeline competition to come around, although Mick Fanning would have to hurt himself before the event for him not to win the world title this year. Six out of the top eight are Australian surfers – been a long time since that was the case! Let’s hope Julian fi nishes in the top fi ve.

ESTUARY: Mangrove jack have been showing up on the high tides with Eudlo, Petrie and Coolum creeks returning quality fi sh on live bait and rattling lures. Flathead up to 85 centimetres are on the drift past the cod hole, jigging plastics. Trevally and tailor are at Cotton Tree. SURF: Tailor will be biting just on dusk at Pincushion with baby blue pilchards best. Sand whiting are in the low-tide gutters from Maroochy Bar to Alex Headland. A few bream are taking pilly pieces off the Mooloolaba rock walls. OFFSHORE: Close-in reefs will be working well for mixed reef fi sh with the lead-up to the full moon bringing in the bait. Spotty mackeral are working the bait, but this past week they have been lure shy, so anchor and berley for best results. Please return undersize fi sh immediately to the water. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is returning bass along the weed edges. Borumba Dam is also fi ring for bass and golden perch on either live shrimps or deep divers, with some anglers nailing fi sh just as they push off the boat ramp. The also applies to Bjelke-Petersen. Don’t forget impoundment licences.
