COURSE DESCRIPTION & STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
This is a General Education Social Science Core course and there are no prerequisites. This course willprovide exposure to the branches of psychology and the scientific approach to the study of behavior. TheLearning Objectives below are based on the UT Core and American Psychological AssociationUndergraduate Learning Goals and Outcomes.
By the end of this class, you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding representingappropriate breadth and depth in the following content areas of psychology:
1. Theory and research representing each of four general domains:
• Learning and cognition• Individual differences, psychometrics, personality, and social processes= Biological bases of behavior and mental processes• Developmental changes in behavior and mental processes
2. The history of psychology including the evolution of methods, theoretical conflicts, andsociocultural contexts.
3. Relevant levels of analysis including cellular, individual, group/systems, and culture.4. Themes, persistent questions, and enduring conflicts in psychology.5. Research methods, designs, and strengths and limitations of these designs.

PARTICIPATION IN PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT RESEARCHYou are required to participate in research in the psychology department. You must earn up at
least 4 research credit hours to receive a grade for this course. To fulfill this course requirement
you may either write 4 research papers, or participate in 4 credit hours of research studies, or do
some combination of the two options. 3 of these credit hours may be completed via online
research experiments. If you cannot participate due to scheduling issues or would prefer not to
participate, you can fulfil this requirement by writing reports on scientific articles. You mustfulfil
this requirement one way orthe other, oryou will not pass the class. I repeat: You will fail the
course if you do not participate in research or complete the reports. Finally, you must have your
research requirement fulfilled by December 4th, 2015 by 5pr!! Please see the link on Bmackboard

DEADLINES & A WORD ABOUT LATE WORKLate exams are accepted, but each day late reduces the score by 20 percentage points. If youknow you will not be able to take an exam on the days it is available, you may makearrangements to take it early without penalty. Exams will be available one day in-class and duringa two-day window in the computer lab (UH 5150F); the best approach is to prepare early so thatyou can take the exam a little early in case you get called to work or something else unexpectedhappens. Plan to have a backup computer and internet connection (friend, library, etc) in caseyou have technical problems at the last minute. Being prepared gives you flexibility so you canmanage even when life gets complicated.
Late Assignments/Quizzes are NOT accepted! All writing assignments, chapter, and modulequizzes are open from the first day of class (August 24, 2915) till their assigned due dates (see thecourse syllabus). If you know that you wilm be unable to complete the assignment/quiz by the duedate please plan ahead and complete it early. recording class meetings. The inappropriate use of cell phones and laptops are not onlydistracting to me but also to your fellow classmates. Cell phones should only be used in the event
of an emergency, and I ask for those with laptops to sit towards the back of the classroom.

All electronic entertainment devices are to be turned off during class. With the exception of
medically necessary assistive devices, approved emergency communications and warning devices
operated by authorized law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel,
"first responders," or other emergency personnel, and cell phones registered with UT-ALERT, all
personal electronic communications devices in the possession of students will be turned off

This course is designed to help you gain an appreciation of the scientific basis of the entire discipline ofPsychology. You will learn about what psychologists study, how they study it, what they know (or don't

know), and the difficulties in understanding behavior expect to spend about 9-12 hours per weekreading the textbook, going through the online materials (paying special attention to those that arespecifically assigned), gaining confidence with the practice quizzes, and studying on your own if you wantto get the highest grade of which you are capable.
You should be seated and ready to begin listening and discussing at 3:30pm when the class begins. If youare late, just enter the back of the room and quietly be seated. Activities at the beginning of the class willnot be repeated for late comers. Turn off cell phones during class. If you must engage in distractingactivities during class, leave the room to do so.
COURSE EVALUATION

There will be a course pretest, five unit exams, and a final exam for this course. You may not usebooks, notes, or friends on the exams.., you should just be using your own brain. I am tentatively
allowing a class period to be used for an exam day, but if we cannot finish the unit in time, exams willbe taken in a proctored computer lab (UH 5150F). I will post announcements on Blackboard tocommunicate whether a class period will be available to take the exam. If you prefer to take yourexam in the lab rather than in class, you may do so. You may visit the lab to take your exam any timethe lab is open when the exam is available. However, multiple instructors utilize this lab for proctoredexams, so it does get busy at times. You will access the course pretest, unit exams, and final exam viathe Blackboard course site. You will be provided a computer and internet access if you choose to takeyour exam in the lab. If you choose to take your exam during the allotted class time, you will need alaptop of your own that connects to the university provided internet service.
o:, COURSE PRETEST- 0% OF FINAL GRADE (0 points)The course pretest will not be graded and your score will not count towards your final examgrade; the pretest will be used to assess your knowledge of psychology ONLY.
4- UNIT EXAMS - 50% OF FINAL GRADE (500 points)There will be five unit exams. Unit exams will be worth 50% of your final grade! The unitexams will be composed of 50 questions and each question will be worth 2 point (you canearn up to 100 points max). You will access your exam via Blackboard.
4- FINAL EXAM - 15% OF FINAL GRADE {100 points)The final covers is cumulative, meaning that it will cover material discussed throughout theentire semester. The final will be 100 questions and each question will be worth i point (youcan earn up to 100 points max). You will access the final exam via Blackboard. Your finalexam is worth 15% of your final grade so please study!
