Motion
Motion• Everything in the universe is moving.• People walk, run, and drive.• Molecules and atoms vibrate with energy.• Planets rotate and revolve.• Motion: Changing the position or place of an
object; movement.• Scientist created words to describe types of
motion: Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration.
Speed
• Speed: The distance an object travels divided by the time it takes to travel.
Formula: Speed = distance (m, cm, km, miles) time (s, hr, min)*Speed describes the motion of an object*
Velocity
• Velocity: Is speed with direction (N,E,S,W)• Velocity describes an objects speed with
position: left, right, forward, backwards.• Direction: Order or position of an object.Example : A car travels 70 mph in a Northwest
direction.
*Velocity describes the motion of an object*
Acceleration
• Acceleration: Is a change speed or direction.• Increase or decrease in speed is acceleration.• Turning left or right is acceleration.• Acceleration = Final speed-starting speed
Final time – starting time
Ex: A car traveling 70 mph increases to 75mph.Ex: A car traveling 70 mph turns to the left. *Acceleration describes the motion of an object*
Triangular Formula Diagram: t = times = speedd = distance
Rules: 1) Cover the letter that represents the unknown variable.
2) If the two remaining variables are side by side you must multiply the two variables to solve for the unknown variable.
3) If the remaining variables are one above the other you must divide the numerator by the denominator.
Let’s Practice! 1. s = 60 cm/s, d = 15 cm, t = ?
2. d = 300 m, t = 62 s, s = ?
3. s = 42m/s, t = 2.3 s, d = ?
