Life is about balance. In order to have a fulfilling life we need to take care of ourselves and strive to
maintain the right balance.
Balance is more important than moderation. People who live life to the max often work extremely
hard, but they also ‘play hard’. These people ensure that they balance the demands of their job by
paying close attention to their personal needs. They develop good habits and consistently do the
right things that enable them to sustain high levels of performance.
The 4‐box model below shows the essential ingredients for a healthy, happy and balanced life. By
developing the rigour and discipline to follow this model you will develop within yourself the
capacity to maintain optimal levels of performance and sleep better!
Given the demands of life it is often difficult to maintain the right balance on a day to day basis.
However, you should measure your trend line. For example, ask yourself: “Over the last month has
the trend been for me to move closer to achieving a balanced life, or am I moving further away?

The things I have to do at work may not always be enjoyable, like making people redundant.
However, I have a sense of purpose about my life at work.
Eating habits
I regularly eat healthy food and understand what is good for my body. I’m aware of how I feel when
I eat different kinds of food. I avoid eating too late, or skipping meals.
Positive relationships
I enjoy positive relationships with those who I interact with. This includes colleagues at work,
relatives and my neighbours. I spend time with my friends and relax by doing things I enjoy.
Exercise
I exercise regularly and find it pleasurable. I am able to fit exercise into my weekly schedule.
