HOMER’S HEADLINES:
I know sometimes it is difficult to know when you should keep your child home from school. I have made for you a
“cheat sheet” if you will. When should I keep my child home?
*Fever of 100.0 ‘F or higher
*Vomiting (regardless of suspected cause)
*Unresolving cough
*Diarrhea
*Wheezing unresolved by prescribed medication
*If a MD has put your child on Antibiotics for Strep or Conjunctivitis
If lice or nits are found-procedure on BCE web site on my page-instructions as follows. Your child should be free of symptoms of fever,
diarrhea or vomiting, without use of any medication to resolve, for AT LEAST 24 hours. We request that if this time falls in the middle of
the school day, you kindly not send your child until the next day. If your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness such as
pinkeye, strep, chicken pox, hand, foot and mouth, Fifths, etc. Please notify me. All information is kept confidential. I need to know so I
can assure the safety of our students and staff who have significant medical issues that could be life threatening if exposed. Your child’s
name is never disclosed. I also have to track cases for both the school system and the Health Department. Again, no names are used.
If you found Lice/Nits, please treat according to the information on my web page. Your child can only return after a parent brings them in
to me, along with proof of treatment (treatment bottle) and I will then examine their head. Forsyth County has a strict NO LICE-NO NIT
policy.
If your child requires medication at school, meds need to be brought in to me by a parent/guardian along with the appropriate forms. All
forms are on my web page as well. I can only administer FDA approved age appropriate medication. Please do not bring in Homeopathic
medications or those from another Country. All prescription medications need to have the pharmacy label on the container. If it is a long
term medication, a care plan is required as well, and on my site.
Information/Forms access: Go to Big Creek Elementary web page; go to Support services tab and click on School Nurse. You will see forms
and lice information on the left side of my page.
Many times parents are not sure if to keep a child home or not. I often get calls, my child doesn’t have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea but
they are lethargic and achy all over or have nausea or keep coughing, what should I do. If your child does not appear well, you can make
the decision to keep them home and send in a parent note when they return. Just be aware, your child is only permitted so many
absences. If your child has a cold, they may attend school. Please remind them to cover coughs and sneezes with their arm inside neck
of shirt, not with their hands. Also, please turn away from people when coughing or sneezing. Wash hands frequently and Drink lots of
water.
Forsyth County’s Policies were developed based on recommendations from experts at the CDC and CHOA. An MD cannot override county
policy. I believe the County’s student attendance numbers and their test scores are a reflection on what a strong policy we have. Thank
you for cooperating in keeping all of our students healthy. “A child needs to be educated to be healthy, and healthy to be educated.”
