A crew from Krause Konstruction removed the cross from the steepleat St. Anthony Church in Menomonee Falls last week. The steeple isundergoing a renovation over the next several months. Photo cour-
tesy of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
Work recently began to renovate the bell towerat St. Anthony Parish.
The church is located at N74 W13604Appleton Avenue in Menomonee Falls. The parishclosed the bell tower in early 2012 due to fallingmasonry and cracks in the structure. The bells werealso silenced. The move came after a structural engi-neer was retained to inspect and determine neededrepairs.
On June 24, a crew from Krause Konstructionstarted work on the project by removing the crossfrom the steeple. Work that was scheduled for lastweek included removing the shingles from the steeple
and weatherizing the exposed steeple. Masonrywork is scheduled to begin this week.
The overall project will include replacing thesteeple roof and making associated repairs to thebell tower, including reinforcing the wood timberframe and repairing the stonework that has deterio-rated due to water infiltration as well as normal welland tear.
Carol McGibany, an administrative assistant atthe parish and a member of the committee oversee-ing the fund raising campaign, said the work is pro-jected to be completed by the end of July, dependingon the weather.
The church raised just over $240,000 for theproject. During an interview in December, McGibanysaid a seven-person committee from the parish hasoverseen the effort. Fund raising events included achili night and the sale of St. Anthony keepsake cal-endars and note cards.

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, How can I protect my child's teeth? The best way to answer that question is to first discuss
when should my child see a dentist? The best way to preventoral health problems is to take your child to a dentist regularly. After your child's first dental visit-which should occur aboutix months after your child's first tooth erupts or by the child'second birthday-he or she should see the dentist every six
months. Early visits will help familiarize your child with thedental office, reducing anxiety and making future visits lesstressful. In addition to examining the development of your
child's mouth, the dentist can teach you how to ensure goodoral health and recommend special preventive care ifnecessary.
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease amongchildren, and unfortunately, children who develop cavities inheir baby teeth are more likely to develop cavities in their
permanent teeth, as well. Protect your child from tooth decayand other oral health issues by taking steps to care for yourchild's teeth throughout his or her childhood.
The next question is how to protect your child from toothdecay. Prolonged exposure to sugar-containing liquids cancause tooth decay in children,so limit your child's consumptionof sugary beverages like soda or fruit juices. If you give yourchild a sippy cup for long periods of time, fill it only withwater. Children should learn to drink from a regular cup asearly as possible so that liquid is less likely to collect aroundeeth that way. Also try to limit your child's consumption ofugary or starchy snacks, especially those that can remain stuck
on the teeth after eating. As a parent, you should care for your child's oral hygiene
until the child is old enough to take responsibility for theirdaily routine of brushing AND flossing.. Make sure your childbrushes for two minutes at least twice a day using a pea sizedamount of fluoridated toothpaste.
Before age two you can clean your child's gums with adamp cloth and brush with water. Flossing should begin as
oon as your child has two teeth that touch each other. Makeure your child gets fluoridated water whether it's bottled orrom the tap. Lastly. The best advise we can give you is to lead
by example. Brushing and flossing your teeth with your childwill teach him or her to understand the importance of goodhabits and good oral hygiene.
Dear Dr. Winter, how do I decide if it's better to have aoot canal and crown lengthening or just pull it and place anmplant?
Great question! Your dentist will look at the remainingooth structure, length of the root and condition of your
adjacent teeth and give you the pro's and cons of each option.
Generally speaking if a tooth can be saved for a minimumof 5 years that treatment may be acceptable. So if there is along root left and the gum tissue is healthy, a root canalprocedure and judicious crown lengthening may be a greatchoice. If the prognosis is poor and it is difficult to get at least4 mm of clean tooth to cement a crown to with at least 2 mmof additional root that the gum tissue can adhere to ( we callthis biologic width) then the tooth should be removed, socketgrafting should be performed and an implant placed. BY THOMAS J. MCKILLENMANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls Village Boardcently supported the option of an com-ned on- and off-stree t path along Fond duc Avenue from Rotary Park to 124th Street.
At the start of a presentation at the June7 Village Board meeting, village Director ofngineering Services Thomas Hoffman sum-arized three options for the area.
According to Hoffman, the three options
r the path off-road, on-road and a com-nation of off- and on-road were present-d during a Feb. 21 public information meet-g. Of the 54 residents who signed in for theeeting, four residents opposed the pathnd eight favored it while two supportedoving the path closer to the road.
Following the meeting, village staffmoved the off-street option and pursuede combination path while reducing theath from 10 to eight feet. Village staff alsocluded the on-street and a "do nothing"ption in its analysis. On June 3, the optionsere discussed with the Public Works andtilities Committee.
Hoffman said that with the on-streetption, the village would add an asphaltath on the north side of the road. He saide village would have to fill in part of thexisting ditch, which would include bringingmaterial that could withstand truck and car
affic. Hoffman said the village "would beving very little" trees. The option would
cost an estimated $745,000. He said thecost would be higher due to having toimport filling material.
In addition, the option would lack a sep-aration between the road and path, andmotorists would see the path as an extensionof the roadway.
"They will use it as a bypass lane. We'veseen that repeatedly on Lily Road," Hoffmansaid.
With the combined on-and-off streetoption, the village would seek to place the
path on the opposite side of the existingditch while attempting to save as many treesas possible and staying within the existingright-of-way. Because there would not beheavy vehicles operating on the path, theconstruction costs would be less an esti-mated $467,000 because material would-n't have to be shipped in.
Hoffman said the option provides a high-er level of safety because pedestrians aren'ton the walkway.
When asked, Hoffman said there are nodiscussions for curb and gutter installation inthe area. He noted that several years agothe village opted not to create an urbanroadway in the area. During further ques-tioning, Hoffman also confirmed that the vil-lage does not plow its asphalt paths in thewinter.
The project will be funded through the vil-lage's fifth tax incremental finance district.Hoffman said the project was estimated tocost $900,000.
The following Concerts in the Park will beoffered in Menomonee Falls this summer. This Village Centre eventco-sponsored bythe village and the Kiwanis Clubis offeredfree of charge to the public.
Concerts are Thursdays, 6:30 to 8 p.m.,at the Village Park Gazebo and Fridays, noon to 1 p.m., at Mill Pond Shelter behindAssociated Bank.
