About
Youth Empowered Society is a nonprofit organization geared towards providing homeless youth in the
Baltimore, M.D. area with a safe haven where they can receive basic life necessities, counseling, and resources
to assist getting them back on their feet in their time of need. Y.E.S. target audiences are youth between the
ages of 14 to 25.
Organization Mission
Founded and operated by formerly homeless youth and their sponsors, the mission of the Youth Empowerment
Society Drop-in center is to provide a safe place to allow homeless youth temporary shelter and provide
basic necessities such as clothing, supplies, food, showers, etc. Y.E.S. seeks to establish supportive relationships
and provide guidance to the youth so they learn and exercise independent living skills, work amongst peers
that relate to their current situation and advocate for policies that are responsive to the needs of homeless
youth.
Organization Vision
All Baltimore youth will be able to easily access the resources necessary to achieve stable housing and
become healthy, successful adults.
General Information
Baltimore Homeless Youth Initiative (BHYI), a coalition of community and government agencies and committed
individuals that seek to fill critical gaps in care for unaccompanied homeless youth, saw the need for an
inclusive and resourceful drop-in center for youth. Founded in 2012, BHYI Youth Leaders established the first
Drop-In Center, located in the center of the city, which is a neutral area away from East and West Baltimore
gang territory. The faculty is ran by BHYI Youth Leaders, young adults with experiences of homelessness that
help youth better relate, vent and find out about resources and information to improve their situations and
better themselves. The organization is also working on activities, such as a YouTube channel of short films
about youth homelessness that will give youth opportunities to have their voices heard and improve policies
and programs that affect youth

This event will help advocate Y.E.S. and their efforts to decrease the number of young homeless individuals.
“Wheels to Build” will also publicize the Y.E.S. program and accept monetary donations from sponsors to
extend the hours of the Y.E.S. drop in center. A wheel-a-thon is the same concept as a marathon with the
exception that the participants are required to complete the race on wheels; meaning skates, roller blades,
long boards, wheelchairs and scooters. Now many ask, "Who would want to complete a marathon on skates."
The idea behind this event is quite unique. The participants are asked to complete the wheel-a-thon on a
piece of equipment with wheels to represent the one of adversities faced by all homeless youths… that is the
feeling of constantly moving place to place with little to no mental or emotional support.
Any and everyone are eligible to participate in the “Wheels to Build Wheel-a-thon.” Friends, family
members, organizations, co-workers, children, adults etc. from all backgrounds are all encouraged to come
out and participant in this wonderful event to raise money for a great cause.
