From food donations to sponsoring and even creating events and activities, owners Tom and Thomas Martin said they believe in making their business a part of the fabric of the community. Ambassadors and Chamber officials presented the award.

VBOC On The Road Back again in Portales May 11

Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce officials announced it has begun its fund-raising effort for the July 4th fireworks. The goal is $10,000.

In addition, the Chamber an-nounced the location for the fire-works show would be moving this year to the Portales softball complex located on Industrial Avenue west of the city.

Chamber Executive Director Karl Terry said the change in location was prompted by the construction of the new football stadium on the site where shows in recent years have been held. The area of the softball complex now features a small pond near where

the show will be held. There is ample parking at the complex and good areas for picnicking and watching .

The chamber takes on the community effort to raise funds for the show each year and guar-antees the fireworks company’s contract. In order to meet that contract this year the Cham-ber has until May 15 to pay for the show. Terry said the company normally requires payment in April.

“We’ve been given a little extra time to fund-raise because we had details to work out on the new site,” said Terry. “It’s extremely important that we either have donations in hand or firm pledges by that date, however. If you can make a donation, whether it’s $25 or $1,000, everything helps and makes this a true community effort.” To make a donation call the Chamber at 356-8541 or donate online at por-tales.com under the July 4th item in

The Roosevelt County Cham-ber along with Portales Main-Street announced the coordina-tion of the first Citywide Garage and Sidewalk Sale Day June 4 in Portales.

The organizations are urging individuals to hold yard sales at their homes or churches that day. They are also inviting businesses to hold sidewalk sales and offer shopping specials that day.

The event will include special promotion that will include a shopping map and be published in local newspapers and availa-ble online and at the Chamber.

To have a sale listed individu-als and businesses need to regis-ter with the Chamber before May 27. There is no cost to indi-viduals or Chamber members.

And a nominal $5 fee for others. “We thought this would be a

great kickoff to summer in Por-tales and give everyone from throughout the area an incentive to shop in Portales,” said Karl Terry, Chamber Executive Di-rector. “We hope that folks hit the sales early then retire to one of our restaurants and taverns to top off the day.”

The Chamber staff will be on the sidewalk in front of the Chamber handing out sale maps and free peanuts. Plans are to arm the staff with water pistols, in case one of the “three or four old grouches” happens by, said Terry.
