Bank or Center for collecting, re-cycling and storing of Halon in Malaysia
Halon is a fire suppression agent that had been banned, due to its
depleting effects to the stratospheric ozone layer. The ozone layer
protects the earth against excessive ultraviolet radiation, which could
cause damage and mutations in human, plant, and animal cells.
Accordance with Vienna Convention For The Protection of Ozone Layer
(22nd Mac 1985) & Montreal Protocol On The Substances (CFCs & Halon)
That Deplete Ozone Layer (16th September 1987).
Production of Halon in developed countries - ceased in 1994.
AP ( Approved Permit) for export & import of Halogenated gas that
contributes to ODP had been revoked by MITI in 1995
Total phase-out of Halon was in 2007
HALON BANK MALAYSIA
INTRODUCTION
There are approximately 8000 buildings & installations that need
fixed fire protection system throughout Malaysia, especially in places
& compartment areas that housed computer mainframe rooms,
telecommunication switching centers, electrical sub-stations,
valuable artifacts, sensitive electrical and electronic equipment.
Estimated 8000 shipping vessels, commercial aircrafts, jet fighters
and military warfare fleets – need the most effective & clean fire
suppression agent
There is no best ‘drop-in’ replacement or alternative for Halon, until
today.
Some developed countries sell each kilogram of Halon for USD100,
for strategic purposes

TYPE OF
HALON
CHEMICAL NAME &
CHARACTERISTICS
COMMON FORM & USES
Halon
1211Bromo-chloro-difluoro-methane, or Halon 1211 BCF,
or Freon 12B1, Halo-alkane, chemical formula CF2ClBr
Liquid streaming agent
Clean agent
Electrically non-conducting, volatile,
Non-residue upon evaporation.
Remarkably safe to human exposure.
Chemically disrupting combustion (it adds a fourth
dimension to fire fighting by breaking the chain reaction)
i. Commonly in Portable Fire Extinguishers.
ii. Normally attached to the wall of buildings or
compartment, for class B fires (flammable
liquids), class C fires (electrical fires) and
also effective for class A fires (common / solid
combustibles).
iii. To protect highly valuable materials in places
such as museums, computer rooms,
telecommunication control room, electrical
sub-stations, ship’s engine rooms and
commercial aircrafts.
* Used since World War II in tanks & aircrafts
Halon
1301Bromo-trifluoro-methane, or Halon 1301 BTM, or
R13B1, Organic Halide, chemical formula CBrF3.
A gaseous flooding agent
Clean agent, electrically non-cinducting, volatile
Advisable to limit exposures to concentrations of 7
percent and below to 15 minutes. Exposure to Halon 1301
in the 5 to 7 percent range produces noticeable effect,
dizziness and tingling in the extremities.
Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) : 10 (CCl3F = 1)
Global Warming Potential (GWP) : 6900 (CO2 = 1)
i. Commonly installed as Fixed Fire Protection
Systems in enclosed building or
compartment. (incorporated with detector,
alarm, plunger, gas piping and nozzles)
ii. Normally used as a total flooding systems
(gaseous fire suppression agent), for class A,
B & C fire.
iii. To protect highly sensitive equipment in
compartments of commercial aircrafts, jet
fighters, computer mainframe rooms,
telecommunication switching centers,
electrical sub-stations, and ship’s engine
rooms.. * Used since 1960’s
