Thedeltaisstillhighandoffcolor,ourriversarehighandmuddyandifyoulooktotheopenriversintheSierratheremightbetoomuchsnowtoaccessthewater.Toughforsomeoneneedinga8ishing8ixbutagreatsituationforthesummerandfall8ishing.Thissurebeatssufferingthroughadroughtwinterprayingforrain. IjustreturnedfromaweekinOregontryingto8ishtheRogu,ebutlikehomeitishighandoffcolor.Wedid8indsome8ishablewaterand8ishedsomewaterthatwasn’treally8ishablebutwhenyoutravelto8ishyouarealittlemoredeterminedtogeta8lyintothe

waterthanusual.No,nosteelhead.Acoupleoftapsbutnoserioustakers. ItdidremindmethatasIcontinuetomature,readthatasgettingolder,awadingstaffandalotmorecautionismoreimportantthanever.Nothingliketakingonemorestepoutintotheriverandwonderingifyouwillbeabletogetbackwithoutgoingforaswim.Ifyouarewadingthistimeofyearpleasethinktwiceanduseextremecaution. We’renearingthedateforannualFlyFishingFilmTourfundraiserforRivesofRecovery.Thisistheeleventhyearofthe3FTshowinginModestoand(Ibelieve)ourtenthyearofhelpingcoordinatetheevent.PastPresidentDeraldLahticancorrectmeifI’mwrong.Morethan$750,000hasbeenraisedoverthepasttenyearstosponsorthetheoutdoorrecreationalrehabilitativetherapyprogramforcombatdisabledveterans. SMALL RAFFLE When held, the small item raffle is $5 per ticket or 3/$10 and only for members in attendance the night of the meeting. The items will be on display and the raffle tickets sold prior to the meeting. The raffle will be held at the end of the meeting time.

Montana’sSmithRiverisoneofthemosticonicandbreathtakingwaterwaysinthenation.59inaccessiblerivermilesfromtheCampBakerput-inattheSheep’sCreekcon8luencetoEdenBridge,the5-day8loatisconsideredabucket-listitembymany.ButfortensofthousandsofMontanans,theSmith,inallitsruggedandpristinewildness,affordsaqualityoflifeandlivelihoodthatthey’veknownforgenerations–aqualityoflifeandlivelihoodthatiscurrentlyunderthreatofbeingerasedbytheproposeddevelopmentofacoppermineinSheepCreek,theSmith’sheadwaters. AFFTAhaslong-stoodwithMontanaresidentsandmanyconservationgroupsopposedtominingforcopperinSheepCreek–andweareproudtocontinueoursupportbyawardingaFisheriesFundgranttooneofthefront-lineorganizations,MontanaTroutUnlimited,fortheirSaveMontana’sSmithRiverawarenessandeducationefforts.

Keyprojectobjectivesinclude:

• Educatingthepublic(inMontanaandnationally)aboutthethreatsposedtothestoriedSmithRiverbyacoppermineproposedinitsheadwaters,includingriskstowaterquality,stream8lowsand8isheries.

• IncreasingnationalawarenesswithanglersandotherSmithRiverrecreationistsaboutthreatstotheriver.

• Workingcloselywithguides,out8itters,andrepresentativesfromtheoutdoorindustrytoengagetheminthe8ightandkeepthemupdatedontheneedsandprogress.
