Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation is home to some alarming statistics when it comes to violence. As you read on, you’ll hear about the number of police reports related violence, and how the community compares to others across the country.
The Centre is trying to prevent these cases with initiatives that educate youth to be more respectful at home, at school, in their relationships and out in the public.
In this issue you’ll also learn about the provincial government’s efforts to stop violence.

syphilis on the rise Increased number of cases in
Northern Manitoba
I f you were hesitant to wrap it up before, here’s some news that wil l have you reaching for a rubber. The Northern Regional Health Authority is seeing an increase in the number of Syphil is cases.
During an interview with CHTM, Dr. Michael Isaac said Thompson has s e e n 1 0 c a s e s i n t h e l a s t s i x months. Usual ly health authorit ies report one or two cases a year.
Syph i l i s is known as the “great imitator” because of the wide range o f symptoms that may deve lop. These symptoms can be confused with other condit ions or diseases
that can be overlooked by a health professional.
J u s t l a s t m o n t h , P u b l i c H e a l t h Department Head, Lynda Wr ight , warned that cases of the STI are showing up again. She was in the midst of Sexual Health Awareness Week, an event that educates youth on those issues.
