We look forward to welcoming you to our Year 2 Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 12th February at
5:30pm. Each teacher will hold their Information Evening in their classroom. Teachers will be presenting
the expectations, requirements, timetables and general information that is needed for you child for this year.
Please be prompt. There will be handouts if you are unable to attend.
Year 2 Teaching and Learning Programs
During the first initial days of school in Week 1, your child participated in our Healthy Lifestyle Choices, where top-
ics of Road Safety, Sun Safety, ‘Bounce Back’ (resilience program), Cyber Safety, Fire and Emergency Evac-
uations and Water Safety were explored as part of the PDHPE Stage 1 program. Students rotated with their 2019
class, meeting all of the 2020 Year 2 teachers.
Over the first few weeks, students participate in initial formal and informal assessments in order for teachers to
gather valuable information on their students. We will also be establishing class routines, discussing school and
class rules and having fun getting to know each other in our new classes.
As a school, we are focusing on students participating actively in their education through a Visible Learning
approach. Students are aware of the learning intention of the lesson and what is expected to be achieved through
the success criteria. As a staff, we will be focusing on feedback from self, peer and teachers to improve student
learning.
English
English is taught across all curriculum areas. Modelled, guided and independent activities within reading and
writing are explicitly taught through differentiated programs. Literacy groups will commence shortly where
reading, writing, speaking and listening activities will be differentiated based on needs within each class. Student
reading levels will be assessed and guided reading will continue to occur.
Year 2 will be involved in our literature-based writing unit, ‘Belonging’, where they will be explicitly taught how to
write purposefully for an audience utilising specific grammar and punctuation. We are continuing our Sound
Waves program, focusing on the 43 phonemes of Australian English that builds and scaffolds student spelling
skills.
As part of the Instructional Leader role, Ms Jenni Milburn will be supporting teachers in class, with programming
and professional development to improve the learning outcomes for all students in literacy activities.
Mathematics
During numeracy lessons, students will participate in differentiated activities which develop their skills in the
strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Our programs are
collaboratively planned to ensure all Stage outcomes are met. Teachers will be guiding students to think critically
and creatively within set tasks and scaffold their ability to explain their thinking and how they achieved an answer.
Students will participate in deepening their mathematical understanding through new programs that have taken
substantial amount of professional development and time by the teachers. Continuing in the Instructional Leader
role, Ms Jenni Milburn and in addition, Mrs Elyce Bignell, will be supporting teachers through professional devel-
opment, programming and in class support to improve learning outcomes within Mathematics for all students.
History
This term, Year 2 will be completing a unit of work, ‘Celebrations’. Throughout this unit, students will explore the
passing of time, sequencing historical events and the significance of the past, present and future. They will dis-
cuss holidays and events relevant to themselves and various communities in Australia and around the world.
Science and Technology
Year 2 are completing a unit of work 'Physical Sciences', incorporating a variety of STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics) activities. These tasks focus on developing students' understanding of the physical
world, including effects of pushing and pulling, gravity and motion. This unit encourages students to follow a con-
sistent design process to complete a project, including finding information, planning and designing, creating, eval-
uating and communicating. The activities allow students to work in small teams, using effective communication
and collaboration skills, to plan, design, create and evaluate a solution to a given task.
Students will also have a weekly session in our PC lab to develop their computer skills and they will be using
iPads to complement classroom activities.
Creative and Practical Arts
Visual Arts activities are integrated with other Key Learning Areas such as History and Geography. Students will
develop a range of skills using different media. Children will also have a weekly dance session with Mrs Amber
Kriletich. Dance days are Wednesdays for 2B, 2L and 2T and Fridays for 2C, 2W and 2M. Please ensure your
child wears their sports uniform and sneakers for their dance session.
Sport and Fitness
This term, sport will be taught as part of a social skills program with Sport in Schools Australia (SISA). All classes
will be involved in physical activities to develop sharing, cooperation, trust, adaptability, visual communication,
verbal communication and problem solving. Please ensure your child wears their sport uniform on Tuesdays.
Library
Your child will have a regular weekly borrowing session in the library with Mrs Ellen Swick. Library day is Monday
for 2C, Tuesday for 2B and 2W, Thursday is for 2M and Friday for 2T and 2L. Your child will need their li-
brary bag in order to borrow.
Additional Information
Pick up and drop off
When students arrive at school in the mornings, they may place their bag on their hooks outside their classroom.
All children are to be sitting in their class lines by the second bell at 9:20am.
To assist your child in developing their independence and to ease congestion in our line up area, we ask that you
say goodbye to your child by the bell or wait behind the class lines so children have full attention to their teacher ’s
instructions.
If your child is attending after school care or catching the bus home, please ensure your child is aware of this and
advise your child’s teacher via a written note.
Parent Helpers
Please be aware that as part of the Department of Education and Communities policy, any volunteer must com-
plete a Working with Children Check. You must complete an application at the school office using a 100 point
identity check. Working with Children Checks will be current for 5 years. This applies to all parent helpers, includ-
Line Up Areas
The Line Up area for students has been changed to under the New COLA, facing the Big Tree. We apologise for
the change from their previous lines that the children were shown last week but for Health and Safety of all
students, we needed a larger space to accommodate our large cohort. Students line up here for morning lines,
after recess and lunch.
Equipment
A stationery list for Year 2 was sent home at the end of 2019. Please bring in your equipment as soon as possible,
along with the required text books. If you require another copy, our stationery list can be found on our school
website.
To support hands-on lessons during art and craft activities, we ask that parents assist their child’s class by
bringing in a packet of wet wipes and a packet of tissues.
Thank you for your support. We encourage you to speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or
concerns throughout the year.
