In April 2011, twenty-one children ages 10-17, took part in a five-day youth photography workshop in Mali’s capital city, Bamako. The aim was to provide marginalised adolescents with the tools and techniques needed to express their opinions and advocate for their rights.
EYE SEE, a partnership between UNICEF Mali and Sony Corporation, was facilitated through collaboration with the Japan Committee for UNICEF and the Centre for the Promotion of Training in Photography (CFP). Youth were selected from several local associations working with and for vulnerable children, including: Association of Child and Youth Workers (AEJT), the National Children’s’ Parliament, the Association for the Promotion of Child and Youth Communicators, Community Social Centres, Samu Social, Kanuya and Sigiya-ton.
The special training session was the seventh in the EYE SEE youth photography workshop series. EYE SEE Mali was facilitated by international photographer Giacomo Pirozzi.
The participatory programme continued through the year focusing on digital photography, story writing, and the use of social media. The work of the children was exhibited on June 16 during the celebration of the Day of the African Child and through a mobile photo exhibition during the 9th edition of the Bamako Encounters, Biennial of African Photography.
This initiative is part of a larger program between UNICEF Mali and the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) to strengthen the internal capacities of AEJT.

While out in the city’s streets and markets, students were not shy about asking permission to photograph individuals. Although a few people refused, many welcomed the students and stood by patiently as the young photographers lined up their shots.
