Maine Dental Hygienists’ Association Presents,
Maine Dental Hygiene Study Club
Welcome! We would like to invite you to become a member of the
Maine Dental Hygiene Study Club for the spring semester of 2017. We are a
group of dental hygienists dedicated to continuing our education and providing
the quality care our patients deserve. All dental hygienists working in any
capacity are welcome. It does not matter if a potential member is starting their
career or has been practicing for over 30 years. We can all learn from each
other.
Many hours of planning go into developing a calendar with topics that are
interesting and worthy for our members. This year we are offering a variety of
classes including topics in non-surgical periodontal therapy, therapeutic
challenges for the clinical dental hygienist, and satisfying your patient’s needs
with current dental technology. We realize our members bring a significant
amount of dental knowledge and experience to our learning environment. We
aim to make this study club experience interactive. We have organized our
material to allow for group investigation and collaboration. Do not expect to
spend the whole class sitting and listening to one speaker with one set of expert
opinion! You, as a member, will be encouraged to interact in small groups,
share your experiences, develop dental solutions, and learn from each other.
Membership is limited to 40 participants at each campus location. So, if you
are interested in membership, please do not hesitate to send in your registration.
We appreciate your support through membership and look forward to a very
exciting year. To be fair we cannot accept requests for individual classes and
allow each participant to join one campus location for the duration of the
semester. Enclosed you will find a class calendar and registration form. A
committee member will contact you shortly with registration confirmation and
study club information. Please e-mail us with any questions. We look forward
to seeing everyone in a few months.

Concepts in Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy: Treatment Planning Session for the Dental Hygienist
The CDC reports that half of all Americans, aged 30 or older have some
form of periodontitis. That statistic roughly equals 64.7 million. It’s no secret that most continuing education courses available to dental hygienists
focuses on this topic. However, if we analyze hygiene production in the
general dental office, the majority of these offices are prophy driven. Meaning patients are being treated and billed with prophylaxis codes, not
periodontal codes. Where are we going wrong? What is preventing us from
treating our patients with the “correct” therapy?
During this workshop we will discuss clinical challenges concerning
nonsurgical periodontal therapy. We will review periodontal treatment
planning, treatment presentation, and clinical techniques to increase treatment effectiveness.

Therapeutic Challenges of Clinical Dental Hygiene
It is our obligation to give our patients the best quality care possible- plain
and simple. The problem is that our days do not always go as smoothly as we
would like them too. We face clinical challenges every day that could deflate
even the most diligent hygienist. Together let’s develop solutions for our
most frequent and frustrating clinical challenges. We will review topics like
time efficiency, instrument management, medical considerations and
treatment planning. In the process, we will learn ways to make our days less
stressful, more efficient, and have the tools necessary to navigate even the
most puzzling dental challenges.
Presenter: Beth DePalma, RDH 4 Category 1 CEUs
Both classes are interactive workshops!
Spring Semester 2017 – Courses Cont’d
To Probe or Not to Probe… That is the Question
An interactive evidence based course reviewing best practices for implant
maintenance, hygiene and answering that ever so often asked question, “Do I need to probe an implant?”
This course will include information on types of implants and abutments commonly seen in practice, implant placement and restoration, clinical
hygiene care of the implant, common implant complications and treatment
of implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.
After this course participants will be able to:
-Identify stages of disease and treatment involving dental implants
-Effectively debride and maintain dental implants with appropriate armamentarium
-Establish appropriate hygiene recall intervals for implant maintenance
-Identify implant complications that may warrant referral back to the specialist
Presenter: Traci L. Dempsey, IPDH 4 Category 1 CEUs Gen Z: Choices and Challenges*
The current and sometimes shocking health behaviors and trends in the teen
generation can influence their oral and systemic health. Dental Professionals have a clinical opportunity to identify risk behaviors.
Participants will engage in a lively discussion on timely topics relating to Gen Z. Dialogue may include oral and overall health issues associated with
nutrition, obesity, eating disorders and substance abuse. Gen Z, also known
as the Global Generation, engage in multiple platforms of social media. This course identifies and addresses many of the platforms that influence
teen’s venturous decisions.
Recognizing high risk behaviors will prepare the dental professional to initiate dialogue that may impact a teen for a lifetime.
Presenter: Lee Somerville, RDH, MS 4 Category 1 CEUs

Designing Healthy Smiles: Evaluate, Communicate, Formulate*
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of Americans believe a smile is an important social asset. Patients with
beautiful, radiant smiles are your ambassadors for your practice. Learning
to use esthetics as a gateway to oral health for your patient population will enhance your practice.
In this course, participants will discover new trends driving dentistry that provide optimum care with lasting impressions. Trends highlighted include:
spa dentistry, Botox for TMD and instant smile makeovers. Since most
patients are “assessing their smiles” at home, developing a smile evaluation
protocol with your dental team can promote discussions about needed and/or wanted dentistry.
Unlock the psychology of dentistry by recognizing patient avoidance behaviors and learn to recognize your own barriers with patients. Enhance
your communication skills and learn how to effectively recommend esthetic
treatment for successful clinical outcomes. Finally, reinvent your practice
through social media, newsletters, websites and treatment completion gift ideas.
