14.2.1 Reaper
All the gears & other components of the reaping bevel box were inspected visually and
found to be in normal working condition.
Other components of cutter bar assembly were inspected visually and found to be in normal
working condition.
15 SUMMARY OF OBSERVATIONS, COMMENTS & RECOMMENDATIONS
15.1 Engine Performance i) The backup torque is 16.0 %
ii) The maximum brake horse power of the engine at 3600 rpm was observed as 2.8 kW during
maximum power two hours test against the declared value of 3.6 kW.
iii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to maximum power was measured as 561
g/kWh against the declared value of 450 g/kWh. The observed value is on higher side than
the declared value.
15.2 Mechanical Vibration: The amplitude of mechanical vibration on various controls/assemblies marked as (*) in
chapter 10 of this test report are very high. This calls for dampening down of vibration to
improve the operational comfort and service life of components.
15.3 The percentage of carbon and manganese of knife section was measured as 0.644 and
0.972% respectively. The knife section of the blade does not meet the requirements of IS:
6025 – 1982 in terms of percentage of carbon and manganese in the material of its
construction.
15.4 Field Performance Test: 15.4.1 Rate of work: i) The average area covered and time required for harvesting one hectare was recorded
as 0.215 to 0.313 ha/h and 3.19 to 4.65 hours respectively.
ii) The average hourly fuel consumption varies from 1.08 to 1.21 l/h & the fuel
requires for harvesting one hectare area was recorded as 3.60 to 5.11 l. iii) The average crop handled was recorded as 5250 to 7466 kg/h in the BPT-Sona-5204
variety of paddy. 15.4.2 Quality of work: i) The post harvest loss was recorded as 0.08 to 0.31 %. ii) The crop conveyance loss was recorded as 2.64 to 16.98 % which is considered on
higher side. iii) The total machine loss was recorded as 2.83 to 17.29 %, which is considered on
higher side. iv) The stubble height was recorded as 37 to 89 mm. v) The crop harvested by the machine is left in windrows, which minimizes the time
required for the collection and transportation of the crop.
15.5 Labour requirement: For continuous operation of the reaper two unskilled labours for cutting of the crop
on sides and corners of the field to be harvested and two skilled operators are

required.
15.6 Operator’s comfort, safety and ease of operation: - i) The following requirements are considered essential from operator’s safety and
comfort point of view: - ii) The reaper clutch lever is not within easy reach of the operator. To engage or
disengage the cutter bar drive the operator has to bend over the steering handle. This
should be looked into. iii) The machine is not provided with the transmission clutch for the smooth changing
of travel speed. This should be looked into. iv) The machine is not provided with the brake for sudden/ emergency stopping of
machine. A suitable braking system shall be provided for stopping the machine as
and when required. This should be looked into. v) Operator find it difficult while taking turns, as the operation of steering clutches and
reversing of the machine at the corners of the field are not smooth. Therefore it is
recommended that steering clutches and reversing of the machine should be
modified for easy maneuverability vi) The cutter bar occasionally gets overloaded due to stucking of weeds and immature
crop. Safety pins/shear pins should be provided in order to avoid the damage to the
machine. vii) The fasteners of the machine gets loosen and needs to be tightened after 2 to 3 hours
of operation. This may be due to the excessive vibration of machine. This calls for
dampening down of vibration. viii) The operator can operate the machine continuously for a maximum period of two
hours. He feels fatigue and tired due to excessive vibrations of the machine. This
calls for dampening down of vibration to improve the operational comfort and
service life of components. 15.7 Wear of critical components: The wear rate of cutter bar on mass basis was recorded as 0.06 % per hour.
15..8 Maintenance/Service Problems: No noticeable maintenance/service problem was observed during the tests.
However, the cleaning and lubricating of cutter bar, cleaning of air cleaner and
oiling of transmission chains needs to be carried out regularly. 15..9 Adequacy of Literature: The applicant has submitted following literature with machine: -
(a) Operation, Maintenance Manual-cum- Spare Parts list of Reaper in English.
(b) Owners Manual of Engine in English and Hindi
The above literature is considered adequate; however, the literature should also be
brought out in Hindi and other regional languages for the guidance of user’s.
