Deans Message
Faculty of Natural Sciences has an outstanding legacy of producing leaders in academia, medicines
and health, engineering, government and non-government organizations and leaders in local commu-
nities. We are student-centered faculty with healthy mix of undergraduate and graduate students and
post-doctoral researchers. Our faculty is highly committed; they go well beyond the traditional methods
of teaching in order to deliver an integrated and holistic educational experience at both the undergradu-ate and graduate levels. They blend theory and practice with a genuine concern for the learning and
success of their students. It is an exceptional group of scientists who are involved not only in high class
research, but are also deeply dedicated to undergraduate education. This is reflected in their creative
teaching methods, mentoring and devotion to undergraduate research. We are committed to help our
students gain excellent training that includes a strong foundation in the sciences and the freedom to
shape their own professional paths.
Faculty of Natural Sciences offers degree programs in various disciplines including; Botany, Chemistry,
Prof. Dr.
Kausar Jamal Cheema
Physics, Geography, Zoology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science and Pharmacy. The curriculum and courses in every
discipline are regularly updated which fosters wider perspectives and maintains the competitive edge required for the next
generation of leaders by bringing together a diversity of experience and interests. Our faculty and students perform researchon a range of scientific problems of immediate relevance to the local, regional and global issues. They are funded from a
variety of sources including the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Science Foundation, Environmental Protection
Department, British Council, USAID, private industry and many others. In science, there are no barriers and the Faculty of
Natural Sciences has included in its educational objectives enhancing interactions with diverse peers in order to stimulate the
minds of students to make their academic work more professional and creative.
Finally, here are few words for prospective students. Science is truly intriguing. It is full of excitement and a life-long activity. All
you need to do is aim high and work hard.

Department of
Biotechnology

OverviewBiotechnology is the application of biological organisms, system or process to produce substances or
process useful to mankind. New and modern biotechnology grew out of advances in biological sciences
such as genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry and information technology.
Teaching and research in the field of biotechnology must be strengthened in Pakistan not only to assimilate
the progress made in the world but also to undertake research for solving our own specific problems. This
would be possible only by producing well-trained scientific manpower in our country. It is therefore urgently
required that well- planned academic programs in biotechnology are incorporated in our education system.
Realizing the importance of strengthening teaching and research in this field, Lahore College for Women
University, Lahore has established a state of the art Biotechnology department to cater the challenges of
21st century. This department will hopefully help in producing well-trained professionals who shall be instru-
mental in establishing and developing this crucial science and technology in Pakistan. Therefore, a great
deal of attention must be paid to human resources and infrastructure development. We try to provide our
students as well as faculty members most intellectually stimulating environment for their academics and
research. We aim to work hard to do potential research in the field of Biotechnology.

OverviewBotany is one of the natural science subjects. Since 1922, Biology is being taught in F.Sc classes whereas
B.Sc started in 1956 in the Lahore College for Women Lahore. Mrs.Dilara Muqeet was the first head of
Biology Department; next head of department was Ms. Prem Madan who worked throughout the career with
missionary zeal for the promotion of department. Mrs. Khatoon Zahoor succeeded Ms. Prem Madan, she
was another prominent professor of the era who put in commendable efforts in starting post graduate
classes (M.Sc Botany) in 1993. Mrs. Dilara Muqeet, Ms. Prem Madan, Mrs. Khatoon Zahoor, Mrs. Shamim
Sattar, Mrs. Rashida Zafar and Mrs. Zafar Hussain chaired the department with due course of time. Botany
Department is offering BS four year degree programs (started in 2005), MS & Ph.D (started in 2009). Botanydepartment has also established a botanical garden at Jallo Park, Lahore and a Molecular Genetics
