The Lotus Holistic Institute is a national organisation providing holistic therapy in the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi). Its mission is to preserve, protect, improve and promote the philosophy, knowledge, science and practice of holistic and alternative therapy for the benefit of humanity. This is achieved by promoting human health and wellbeing and the advancement of a holistic approach to therapy as well as boosting education and educational principles to clients and the public. Evidence-based healthcare is fostered throughout the practice. The operational strategy of the institute is to sustain the high quality of the service and to gain the trust of the public.

Objectives

In order to achieve the mission statement, the Lotus Holistic Institute has the following objectives:

• To maintain a high level of operational management in order to achieve excellence in service provided.

• To provide high quality holistic therapy to the public through non- invasive complementary medicine and therapies.

• To provide educational opportunities to staff to maintain up to date and scientific practice based on evidence and to the public to raise the level of health and wellbeing awareness.

• To foster and utilise research needs and evidence based practice which will enhance service delivery, educational principles, patient care and public benefits.

• To sustain a superior level of services for the benefits of staff, complementary medicine and the public. This will in turn benefit the United Arab Emirates.

Dr. Ahmed YounisAssociate & visiting Professor Faculty of Health , Social Care and Education.St. George’s University of London and Kingston University

Dr. Ahmed Younis is currently Associate Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences in the Faculty of Health andSocial Care Sciences of St. George’s University of London and Kingston University. He is also Visiting Professor at Bezmialem Vakif University ,Istanbul,Turkey.Besides his responsibilities as member of the strategic management group of the School, he is also Director of the Prescribing Programme.Dr Younis originally graduated from Cairo University Medical School, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Following graduation, he gained clinical experience in Cairo, Egypt, then Saudi Arabia and Gaza, Palestine, before being offered the post of Lecturer and later Director of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Degree Programme at Bethlehem University, Bethlehem, Palestine. This programme was funded by Save the Children to develop the Palestinian rehabilitation sector in response to the ongoing civil conflict. While in that post, Dr Younis carried out research towards his doctorate entitled Rehabilitation of Spinal Cord Injured People in Palestine, and set up the Palestinian Physiotherapy Association, becoming its first President.While completing his thesis at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, Dr Younis’ permit to work in the West Bank was revoked, and after some months deliberation he accepted the post of Lecturer and later Acting Course Director in the School of Health Sciences, Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Dr Younis’ main areas of teaching are Neurology, Research Methods and Evidence-Based Practice, Medical Statistics and Data Analysis. He has developed a number of blended learning and online courses (including Neurology and Clinical Skills for medical, physiotherapy and paramedical students), and is completing a book about data analysis and interpretation of results, using SPSS.Dr Younis’ research interests include interdisciplinary education, traumatic brain injury, stroke, prescribing, using different research techniques (including Identity Structure Analysis with Ipseus software). He is also interested in complementary medicine, in particular the recently revived practice of cupping, and is supervising a PhD research examining its efficacy. Dr Younis is a founder member of the British Cupping Society, and currently its President.Besides serving on the Faculty Research Ethics Committee and Faculty Quality Committee, Dr Younis’ professional duties include curriculum design and development, and quality assurance. He also has responsibilities in the wider community, for example as Arab Co-Chair of the Arab Jewish Forum, a House of Lords dialogue group.Recently, Dr Younis was offered visiting professorships at Gollis University, University of Hargeisa and Amoud University, Hargeisa, Somaliland. During his visit to Hargeisa, Somaliland he acted as a consultant for the government on the development of health services and higher education.

Dr. Cheryl WhitingAssociate ProfessorFaculty of Health, Social Care and Education.Kingston University and St. George’s University of London

Dr. Cheryl Whiting is currently an Associate Professor at Kingston and St George’s, University of London where she is also the course director for the Master of Research in Clinical Practice, an inter-professional programme funded by the National Institute of Health Research as part of the UK Government’s drive to modernize clinical academic careers for nurses, midwives, pharmacists and alliedhealth professionals.Cheryl qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 1993 and, following seven years in practice at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, began her teaching career at Sheffield Hallam University in 1999.She holds higher degrees in medical imaging, educational management and research, and a doctorate in education. Her doctoral thesis focused on social learning: exploring the development of professionalism among diagnostic radiography students. She teaches a wide of range of subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and leads modules relating to research, mentorship and practice education, continuing professional development, and advanced imaging practice.Cheryl supervises postgraduate and doctoral level and is an accredited assessor with the Society and College of Radiographers. In 2014 she received professional recognition for the quality of her educational practice and was awarded a Senior Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy.

Prof. Dr. Amir SalehPresident of American society of Traditional Science, Chicago, Illinois, USAProfessor of Physical Therapy, faculty of physical therapy, Cairo University.

Dr. Amir Saleh is currently the professor who is responsible for Alternative therapy research at faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University.He’s also a supervisor at Cupping Therapy researches in The Family Medicine department at the faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University. Besides his responsibilities as a president as a president of American society of traditional science, he’s also the director of Alex Total Wellness centers at Illinois, USA.Dr. Saleh originally graduated from Cairo University. Following his graduation he gained his experience in Cairo, Egypt.He worked for four years in a military hospital then became a lecturer at faculty of Physical therapy, then moved to Saudi Arabia and stayed there for a year, then got his Physical therapy license from Tennessee, USA. He then moved to Chicago and got another license from the state of Illinois.Dr. Saleh finished his masters, PhD. from Chicago medical school, and then he joined a post doctoral program for alternative medicine from the same school.He visited most of Europe to teach the prophetic medicine and has hundreds of TV programs in different channels; national and international TV.He also has four published books; Your Health in Your Meal, Your Health in Your Prayer, Your Health in Your Prayer and 333 Questions and Answers in Herbal Medicine.

Dr. Ghazala Mulla is HOD. Of Physiology department Z.V.M. Unani Medical College and Hosital, Pune, Maharashtra, India. Sheis teaching the physiology subject to undergraduate students for the last fourteen years and medical genetics subject to the postgraduate students. She has been guest faculty in other colleges of different faculties like pharmacy, dental, nursing and senior college of science faculty.She is also a cupping therapist. At her clinic “Herbs and Hakim” she and her colleagues have performed about 7000 Hijamah in last five years. Dr. Ghazala Mulla has completed her graduation in Unani System of Medicine in the year 1993. Her wish for higher education and accepting new challenges took her to Department of Ayurveda at University of Pune where she completed her post graduation in the subject Kaya Chikitsa. She has also completed a course in medical genetics from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, Maharashtra. So, she stands out as a true model representing an integrated, multidisciplinary, multifaceted medical mindset. She has three research projects to her credit among them is an EMR project sanctioned by Dept. of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family welfare, New Delhi, India. Her research project is genetic analysis of Temperaments. She also got a provisional patent for psoriasis formulation, which is a gel based topical cream.Dr. Ghazala Mulla has presented many scientific papers at various International Conferences in different countries like Turkey and Sri Lanka to name a few. She has also presented many papers at National Conferences in cities like New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kerala, Goa and Pune etc. Some of her papers have been published in reputed scientific journals. She has delivered several lectures on Hijamah therapy and massage therapy as resource person. She has given training of cupping therapy to the many Unani Physician.

The title of thesis was ( The effect of cupping and bloodletting therapy in the management of non discogenic low back pain )Certified training courses by Egyptian ministry of health in complementary medicine (Acupuncture -herbal medicine – cupping therapy .Certified training courses in emergency medicine & sports medicine .Certified training courses in National training institute in field of Rheumatology, physical medicine & Rehabilitation.Membership of Egyptian societies of Rheumatology & orthopedic surgery-sports medicine and low Back pain. Partnership of many Egyptian and international conferences. Partnership in many local and international research studies with some multinational pharmaceutical companies.I had worked in Ministry of health in Egypt as general practitioner for one and half years, then Resident of Rheumatology physical medicine & rehabilitation in Menshawy general hospital in Tanta for five years then specialist of Rheumatology physical medicine & rehabilitation up till now.I have social experience in many fields of Rehabilitation (Orthopaedic rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation , chest Rehabilitations, stroke Rehabilitations,Geriatric Rehabilitation, Amputee rehabilitation, ACL tear rehabilitation and C.P rehabilitation).

Course Summary:

This course is designed specifically for participants undertaking the introduction to cupping therapy. It covers the knowledge, clinical skills and attitudes of to enable you to practice cupping therapy. The knowledge and clinical skills include mainly Introduction to Cupping Therapy, Cupping Therapy research, benefits and contraindications, demonstration of technique and practice of technique. The attitudes include communication, ethical, behavioural, legal and personal issues. Scenarios will be used to help a problem solving approach which will aid the theory to be applied to practical situations.

Aims of the Course

The aim of the course is to:

1. Develop relevant knowledge, understanding, skills, and professional behaviour in order to work as an effective, cupping therapist.

2. Promote empathy and sensitivity to engender a patient focussed approach to cupping therapy practice.

3. Foster critical thinking, reflection, and skills of self-directed learning, as a basis for life long personal and professional development.

4. Enable graduates to respond to changing political and societal contexts, to provide services which meet the needs of individuals and populations.

5. Inspire a responsibility to promote excellence within the cupping therapy Profession.
