Boots. I’m dyIng to put on my high leather boots! Problem is it’s still so stinkin’ hot outside. That means hot boots. The kind of hot where when I take them off, my legs are like 1000 degrees, not the kind of hot that makes the boy’s heads turn! The fall weather is always fickle in Texas and it seems to never decide when to officially cool off. Make no mistake, I’m not asking for cold – just a little cooler. Pick my battles, right!
November may certainly cool off, but the deals around town are hot-ter than ever! We’ve got some great offers inside this month’s edition that I hope you find useful. After all, that’s our entire reason for exist-ing. I want to do a good job of promoting our clients by offering great deals and service to our community. You’ll also notice a couple of our favorite family recipes inside in case you need some last minute ideas for those upcoming family gatherings. No secrets here, just yummy grub! If anyone else has any great recipes to share, we’d love to see them posted on our Facebook page. How cool would it be to get a recipe swap going that would turn us all into kitchen ninjas?! I can dream, I suppose.
Ok, another big truck story. For those of you following along, you know I’ve been driving my husband’s truck recently. Well guess who ran the gas tank to empty the other day? Yeah, this girl! It’s just the girls and me on Renfro and the engine starts puttering. “Oh no!” Instant panic sets in. For the record, I was short on time not short on cash and just figured I’d chance it. Bad call. So the truck dies and now we’re coasting. Seriously? It slows down so much I have to pull onto the shoulder. Meanwhile, I’m praying I can literally roll to the next gas station. Well, after swinging across the road and literally rolling to a stop just close enough to the pump, I’m happy to report we made it. Have you ever tried steering a big truck with no power steering? Not an easy task, ladies. My girls and I died laughing and could not believe we made it coasting the whole way. Sometimes you just gotta laugh these things off. Oh, and please don’t tell my husband!
Happy Thanksgiving from the whole Local Life crew! We’re very hon-ored to serve our little community that’s grown so big. We hope you get some joy from the article inside. Hug your families and enjoy the time together. Christmas is right around the corner! See you guys around town…

A CyniCal Thanksgiving.
Huh?
Local Life
Local Life | NOVEMBER 2014 5
"i love Thanksgiving. For me, i had wonderful memories growing up. i remember hanging with Cousins, eAting
way too much, and dallAs Cowboys football."
allow me to ramBle… First, I am anything but a cynic. In fact, you could say I am dangerously on the opposite side of that coin. I’m perfectly fine with that. What I’ve come to notice, however, is that many of the real, human treasures that we take for granted have become more and more susceptible to having the opposite effect of their original intent. The Thanksgiving holiday is a great example of a disappointing trend in society we’re seeing right before our eyes. I think it’s important to point out that this is not an attempt to sell you anything or change your opinion, and no animals were harmed in the process!
I love Thanksgiving. For me, I had wonderful memories growing up. I remember hanging with cousins, eating way too much, and Dallas Cowboys football. If I close my eyes I can still see the rows of pies and dessert items that outlined my grandmother’s dining room. We call my grandmother Honey. It’s got to be because she’s so sweet. Let me tell you, Honey can flat throw down in the kitchen. Our family was, and still is, always laughing. Every year there’s a competition of some sort, because what’s family without trying to one-up each other, right? Nowadays, our groups have shrunk a little in size. The whole family doesn’t gather like we used to. Extended families, priorities, and hectic schedules have gotten in the way a bit. It’s ok, though, because albeit smaller, we still share in many of the same traditions. We’ve even added some new ones. Since the ladies
in my life are professional shoppers, Black Friday is a big deal in our house. While lunch is preparing, we’ll lay out all of the newspapers, magazines, and holiday shopping flyers across the living room floor. Everyone plops down with their markers and lists and goes to work. “I want this one! Oooooh, look at that. What a great deal!” These are all common gasps you’ll hear. Christmas shopping lists get built and we get to enjoy each other’s company. Food. Outside-activity. Football. Food. Nap. Dessert. More football. Food. That pretty much sums up the remainder of the day. What’s not to like about a day like that?
Here’s another point of view of that same day:
Work almost always gets so busy in November-December. These holidays leave me with less time to do more work. I’m going to have to put in some late hours this week so I can take the time off necessary. The family is going to have to fend for themselves. We’ve got a long drive ahead of us so it would be great to get some sleep. Down there and back in one day is rough. Unfortunately, since I signed up for two sides and a dessert, it looks like I’ll be cooking instead of sleeping. It’ll be fun, it’ll be fun. I can’t believe we overslept! Maybe if I just drive 5 miles over the speed limit I won’t get pulled over. It’s a holiday, right? The casserole shifted a bit during the ride so I can only imagine what my sister is going to say. Ok, I can finally relax after hanging with the family for a few hours. It’s
6 www.LocalLifeTX.com
getting late so we better get on the road. We’ve got the leftovers. We’ve got the shopping list(s) for tomorrow. I think I’ll be home in time to get a couple of hours’ sleep before I wake up at 3:30 AM to enter into the Battle Royale that is American Retail on November 28th. Those other shoppers better pack a lunch because I am straight up on a mission tomorrow. Bring it!
Did we miss the part about giving thanks for something? By the time you’re able to take a breath, and actually enjoy the company of those family members you haven’t seen since the last holiday, it’s time to head back out the door. Have we created a crazy expectation of how we’re supposed to act and what we’re supposed to accomplish in this short, so-called relaxing weekend? Imagine if it’s your house the family is coming to. The burden and stress of going above and beyond with the cleaning, just so it can get completely messed up again the very next day is overwhelming. Then you add RETAIL. Over the last 15 years, the day after Thanksgiving has evolved into this crazy gauntlet of every-man-for-himself mad dash for savings, all in the name of saving 20 bucks. 20 bucks – really? For crying out loud, the day is called BLACK Friday! Sounds lovely. And, yes, people die during these shopping adventures. It’s just crazy to me.
Perspective is such a funny thing. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Different strokes for different folks. I’m lucky I suppose. I’ve always sort of leaned to the “worry less – laugh more” side of the fence. For sure it’s not always easy. I have to be conscious of it. No doubt there are days when smiling is difficult. Holidays, time off from work, visiting family members, eating well, and reflecting back on the things I am grateful for should not be one of those days when smiling is hard. It really all comes down to making a decision that holidays like Thanksgiving are truly a time for us to enjoy all of the many things we are blessed with in life. Make the decision to have the right perspective. It’s a contagious quality and your positive outlook can infect others. What’s even funnier is that it really comes down to a simple decision. It’s so easy. Your bills will be there when it’s over. Your work may still be hectic come Monday. Your child
may actually live even if they don’t get that one super-cool toy. That extra $20 bucks I have to spend for waiting until next weekend to buy won’t actually be the cause of my bankruptcy. You want to do something really crazy? Hold a door open for someone on Black Friday and let them get in before you. Talk about mind blown!
I guess what I’m saying is show up when you show up. Your dishes don’t have to be perfect. Laugh. Hug. Stand up with both hands over your head when your team scores – even if no one else is. Overeat. There are no diets on the 27th. Have seconds. Leave when you want and don’t set an alarm. So what, if you don’t get there before they open. Who likes standing in line anyways? Pay attention to the Christmas ornaments. Go touch and feel all of the gadgets that you want to buy and then go home and buy most of it online – where it’s the exact same price, if not cheaper. Tell a clerk, “Thank you,” or “Happy Thanksgiving!” Better yet, give out some high-fives. High-five’s are the best. Do lunch with the fam’ in your PJ’s. Catch a matinee and plan absolutely nothing on Saturday. The ole battery could stand a good recharging! If you go to church, don’t miss this Sunday – I hear the message is awesome. When you’re there, squeeze the hands of those beside you and send up a special thank you for that motley crew that you call family.
Life can be pretty overwhelming at times and it’s easy to get caught up in the rat race. The media, the peer pressure, and the expectations can be misleading. The cynics are everywhere. The good news is there are still a few of us out there that take great pride in stopping to smell the roses and soaking in the finer things of life. I hope you’ll join us. Before long, we might just become the majority and the cynical points of view just might become fossils. Look past what you’re “supposed” to do and make an effort to do what you “want” to do this holiday season. Tell your kids it’s ok to do the same. Enforce a strict “3-day-no-complaining” rule. Heck, shoot for 4! It’ll be the best 4 days you’ve had all year. And if anyone asks, tell them I said you deserve it. Be thankful. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
½ cup milk
½ melted butter

Wound Care Linda Pham, M.D.Dr. Linda Pham is now practicing advanced wound care at the Texas Health Huguley Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.
“Practicing wound care allows me to have a huge impact on a patient’s quality of life. We can often save a limb from amputation or heal a wound that has troubled a patient for months. Those results, and the relationships we build with patients, make wound care fulfilling,” said Dr. Pham.

AMERICAN
ROSCOE’S SMOKEHOUSESlow and low. That’s how they get down with their fork-tender, fall off the bone meat. With a simple philosophy and a secret rub, this is real Texas barbecue cooked to perfection. Add some fresh sides and a 29-degree schooner and you’ve got “well-rounded” covered. Two words: Banana Pudding. I’m done. 1541 SW Wilshire Burleson (817) 484-2123 $$ L D
DALTON’S CORNERIf you were a Burleson teen from the 80’s, this name is sure to ring a few bells. What you may remember as a teen nightclub is now one building over and a nostalgic bar and grill, chock-full of menu items with throwback names. Check out the great burgers, steaks, chicken and more or try the Barnett Shale Pasta with a mix of cheeses and just a little kick. After dinner, make a night of it at the bar or shoot a few games of pool. For larger groups, a party room is available. Go check ‘em out today! 200 S. Main St. Old Town Burleson (817) 295-5456 $$ L D
MOOYAHDeliver the best burger & fry experience EVER and have fun doing it! That’s the Mooyah mission. Not only is the food great (I like the turkey burger) the atmosphere is just as cool. Grab a pen and take your own order. Then doodle on the walls until it arrives. Unique twists on the American burger and yummy shakes are sure to leave you more than satisfied – we promise! 12632 South Freeway Suite #101, Burleson 817-295-1577 $ L D ®
SMASH BURGERFresh, never frozen 100% Certified Angus Beef… Ok, so they make good burgers. But let’s talk handspun classic shakes served in a frosted glass for a sec. So good! Back to the food. Smashed-to-order burgers are for the true burger fan. Artisan buns, freshly chopped produce, and flavorful sauces dress a juicy burger you’ll enjoy down to the last bite. This is a burger with a soul. They also do chicken pretty darn well, and lay down some of the freshest salads in town. 1505 Wilshire Burleson $$ L D
THE OLD TEXAS BREWING CO. Yes, we have a brewery! Located in Old Town, The Old Texas Brewing Company serves Burleson’s largest selection of beer and their Frost Rail Bar keeps it ice cold. Looking for something different? Fridays and Saturdays, dine on the Rooftop Patio and enjoy live music. Try one of the mouthwatering burgers, a juicy Angus Ribeye or enjoy some great BBQ with an ice cold beer. It’s a great way to end the day or week. 112 West Ellison. Burleson (817) 447–BEER (2337) $$ L D ® Brunch on Saturday and Sunday
THE PORCHThe Porch just got a makeover. The small-town atmosphere makes for a great experience. An extended deck situated under a large, shady oak tree provides a restful setting to enjoy your old favorites like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, or grilled pork shops. Personally, I love taking the fam’ for breakfast. There’s just something about a good, home-cooked breaskfast to start your day right. Whatever you decide, don’t forget about the pies. Yumm-O! 140 South Wilson Street, Burleson (817) 426-9900 $ B L D
SPICE RACK TAPAS BAR & GRILLFrom a great staff and environment to the patio and live music, “The Rack” is soon becoming a fan favorite in Old Town. Organic produce and LOCAL from Walnut Creek Farm (we like that part!) fills out a menu that is simple but delectable. Start with the Wedge salad and move on to the Venison Tacos, or just cozy up to the bar with some stuffed jalapeno’s or sliders and a cold beverage. 133 S. Wilson St. Burleson (817) 295-7221 $$ L D
DICKEY’S BARBECUE PITSauce. Perfecting recipes since 1941, this authentic Texas-style barbecue pit is certainly no stranger to the smoker. While the first restaurant started in Dallas, they got to Burleson as fast as they could. With a strong family background this franchise location fits right in to our community. All meats are prepped and cooked on site and you’ll love the crazy-good sides like jalapeno beans and a solid mac and cheese. Ice cream is complimentary and, listen up parents - Kids eat FREE on Sunday! 251 SW Wilshire Burleson (817) 295-2006 $ L D
STONE SOUP CAFEIf you’re in the mood for soup, salad or a sandwich, Stone’s is the place to be. Their sandwiches are “to-die-for” and the soup is always delicious. Hit up the salad bar for dinner and welcome the surprise of a cookie-treat to tackle that sweet craving you’ve been having! Eating healthy is never easy and rarely fun but Stone Soup Cafe makes it possible to do both. You can get in and out in no time flat. 333 Southwest Wilshire Blvd., Burleson (817) 447-2989 $ L D
GRUMP’S BURGERSAhhh, Grump’s. It just doesn’t get much better. Voted “Best Burger” more than once, these guys know what they’re doing with a patty. If a burger, sandwich, salad or side is what you’re after, they’ve got a dish that’ll more than satisfy. Bacon in your grilled-cheese - who would’ve thunk it? Cold beer, ice cream shakes and a really cool upper-deck and patio right in the heart of Old Town, Grump’s is waiting for your family now. 108 S. Main Old Town Burleson (817) 447-8800 $ L D ®

Digital Mammograms
You know you should get a mammogram, but do you know when to
start? Is it at age 40 or 50? Should you start sooner? Or later? At
Texas Health Burleson and Texas Health Huguley, we’re here to clear
up the uncertainty because when you should start getting
mammograms depends upon, well, you. We don’t just look at age, we
look at factors like family history, physical activity and lifestyle so you
know when the right time is for you and how often you should
schedule them. And if you are at risk, we offer comprehensive breast
care from diagnostics to support. Let us help you take the guesswork
out of breast care. Go online to take the Breast Cancer Risk
Assessment and schedule your digital mammogram today.
