Q: My 14-year-old malecat keeps pulling upthreads on new carpet onmy previously wood stairs.Please help! What can Ido or use to prevent thisfrom continuing?I have been clippinghis nails regularly. I havealuminum foil over thefirst few steps. I have abig piece of cardboardblocking the stair entry.Somehow he gets onthem anyway and I willnotice a new pull. I ambeside myself!
A: From the cat’s pointof view, your steps werenewly carpeted just for hisenjoyment! He has no ideathe fabric on the once-barren steps that feels sogood to him can possiblyhave any monetary value.He has no concept ofmoney at all.There are many ways todissuade him from usinghis claws on the carpet inaddition to the methodsyou have used. I havefound that putting strips ofdouble-sided tape on theedges of the steps worksvery well and is moreconvenient than aluminumfoil and cardboard.No matter what you do,however, he will do hisbest to go around thoserepellents if he has noother place to use hisclaws. Get one of thosebig cat trees that haveshelves covered withcarpet. Place this nearthe stairs and make itas attractive to him asyou have made the stairsunattractive with the tapeand such. The best wayto do this is by spreadingloose catnip all over theshelves.Now when he walksover to the stairs to usehis claws and finds themunattractive, he will seeand smell the cat tree asan alternative, walk awayfrom the steps and usehis claws on the carpetingof the cat tree. Thus youhave tricked him intomaking your idea his idea.As time goes on andhe no longer thinks ofthe carpeted steps as anoption, you can remove thetape and other barriers.
