DECEMBER 11, 2016
In his 2014 Gaudete Sundayhomily, Pope Francis said that this Sunday is known as the “Sunday of joy”, and that instead
of fretting about all they still haven’t done to prepare for
Christmas, people should “think
of all the good things life has given you.”
SNOWFLAKE SOCIALMark you calendar! On Sunday, December 18th, we will be having our Snowflake Social, a parish celebration, in our newly renovated parish hall following the 11 am Mass. Children (and others) will be invited to make a paper snowflake that will be part of our Church decorations. There will be holiday treats and singing, and all are invited to attend.
ANGEL TREE PROGRAMThis Christmas, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society will be
organizing an Angel Tree program. This program allows needy families to
request gifts for children and other family members from those who have the ability and willingness to give. Any family in need within our parish boundary can contact the Society through our help line at 647.428.2880. Members of the St Vincent de Paul will be available after Mass at the Angel Tree at the entrance of the church, and they will help you select a family to help, and to register your participation.
LOST AND FOUNDIf you’re still standing in the parking lot this afternoon,it may be because you’ve lost your car keys. Or your Rosary or your glasses or whatever. A whole bunch of
things have recently ended up in the Lost and Found. Please contact the parish office if you’re
missing something.
SHARELIFEBecoming the hands of Christ tothose in need …We are called to be the hands of Christ to those in need. For some, this may mean providing a place to stay for and supporting an elderly relative, volunteering at a food bank, or supporting a parish Out of the Cold or outreach programs.
Many of us lead busy lives, where the time to be actively involved is not as available as we would like for it to be. This is where ShareLife, our annual archdiocesan appeal, comes in. Through our support, we provide resources to over 40 agencies, informed by Catholic values, offering much needed programs and services to those both here in our communities and around the world.
Our agencies provide counseling to families in need, support children and youth, provide love and care for people with special needs, offer assistance to refugee and new immigrant families, and help to spread the Gospel in the greater world. ShareLife funded agencies also provide for the education of our clergy and hospital chaplaincy programs with the Archdiocese of Toronto.
Your support of the ShareLife appeal has touched the lives of
thousands of people both here and around the world. In this Christmas season, we thank our parish communities for all that they do to support the work of ShareLife agencies through the year. Together we are indeed fulfilling the Gospel value to ‘love another
as I have loved you.’

GAUDETE SUNDAYOne of the candles in the Advent wreath is rose-colored, for what is called Gaudete Sunday or Joy Sunday, the beginning of the third week in Advent. The day takes its common name from the Latin word Gaudete (“Rejoice”), the first word of the Latin introit
of this Mass: Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete. (“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say,
rejoice.”)
The season of Advent originated as a fast in preparation for Christmas, and preserved most of the characteristics of a penitential season which made it a kind of counterpart to Lent. Gaudete Sunday is a counterpart to Laetare Sunday (Third Sunday of Lent), and provides a similar break about midway through a season which is otherwise of a penitential character.
It signifies the nearness of the Lord's coming and the penitential exercises are suspended, in order to symbolize that joy and gladness in the promised Redemption. On Gaudete Sunday rose-coloured vestments are worn instead of violet to emphasize this joyous anticipation.
