Read the Google Webmaster Quality Guidelines CAREFULLY
The guidelines have been updated recently, and now provide more information
about the issues that Google is on the lookout for.
Pay particular attention to the Guideline on “Link Schemes”

Be on the lookout for these:
Sitewide footer & Blogroll Links
Over-use of exact match anchor text
Comment Spam
Being seen in Bad Neighborhoods
Over-use of Article marketing
In a Nutshell: If it was “created” rather than “earned” it is not natural

Links that do not pass PageRank are not
affecting algorithmic assessment of your site You can prevent PageRank from passing in two ways:Add a rel= “nofollow” attribute to the <a> tag
Some other examples you may see:rel= “ external nofollow”
rel= “ me nofollow”
Redirect the links to an intermediate page that is blocked from search engines with a robots.txt file

Do Not turn your Link Removal campaign loose

Check top referring domains for matches against links identified as unnatural.
If there are unnatual links in your list that are bringing you referrals, make sure those links are protected by requesting a “nofollow”.
