Gospel Fest Brings Local and International Line-up
This Week’s Feature Story
will be added by Isabel Valdez of Santo Domingo.
Positive of Trinidad will also be singing his gospel reg-
gae music and Judith Gayle of Jamaica will be perfo -
rming songs from her latest Gospel album, I Believe.
Local artists performing are Joy Praise and the New
Baptist Church Choir.
Later in the festival schedule, Rev. Dr. H. Beecher
Hicks Jr., who is known as a “Preacher’s Preacher”
from Washington DC, will be the Guest Speaker at
both the Emancipation Service at 4pm on Sunday,
August 5th at the Sunday Morning Well and at the
Sunrise Service at 7am on Monday, August 6th at the
Administration Complex.
So, the scene is set and the fes-
tival grounds are taking shape
already with the lights, booths, the
main stage and Coney Island all
being installed – you can almost
smell the popcorn! For most people,
this is a time to celebrate freedom,
embrace our culture and come
together as a people. So enjoy your-
self and have a safe and fun time
this festival season.
With Festival Village opening at the end of next
week, the scene is being set for an impressive 58th
Anniversary of the Emancipation Festival. One of the
key themes is, “Emancipation: A Golden Story to Tell”
and at this time of year it is particularly important to
remember that festival in the BVI is about fun. It’s a
wonderful time for family, friends, food and partying -
however there is also a strong spiritual element that
goes hand in hand with the festival and is intrinsic to
the whole event.
With this in mind, it is fitting that this year, the
Gospel Fest is the first event to be held at the festival
grounds. So, be there at 7:30pm next
Thursday, 26th July to experience a
line-up of artists from home as well as
from the wider Caribbean region.
Rev. Dr. M.A. Turnbull, Chairman of
the V.I. Heritage Month Committee
said, “2012 marks our 15th year of co-
ordinating the spiritual aspect of our
Emancipation Celebrations and we are
very excited about this year’s line-up.”
He went on to say that for the first
time at the Gospel Fest, Latino flavor Joel Murray a.k.a. Positive

I am dating a woman who recently came out of a
ten year relationship. My problem is that this woman
is still very close to her ex-boyfriend and they speak
on the phone daily and still see each other some-
times. She claims there is no intimacy between them,
but is it unreasonable for me to expect that they make
a clean break?
Disgruntled man
Dear DM,
I understand where you are coming from. He had
his turn, in fact he had ten years of turns and if they
are over, then they should be over, right? Life is not
always as straightforward as that. What will make this
situation work is you hearing and seeing that she is
committed to you only and her not feeling pressured
to give up what might be a good friendship.
Your girlfriend should have some boundaries
between her and her ex, so that their interaction does
not give him the impression that he still has a chance
of being with her and so it is clear who she is really
with. Also, the fact that she recently came out of the
relationship makes me wonder: why are you dating so
soon? Do you think she had enough time to get over
her ex boyfriend?
I suggest you state your concerns and give her
some time to remedy the situation. An adult woman
should know what would make her partner uncom-
fortable, especially if she were to put herself in your
shoes. Talking daily is definitely too much. I don’t
think you need to be nagging her about how close she
is with someone else; she should know where her
obligations lie and act accordingly.
What about you? You need to check yourself also.
Are you doing your part as a man and trying to meet
her expectations? If you lapse in certain areas, then it
could be easy for her to substitute someone else to fill
the role that you should be playing. You don’t want
your woman crying to another man saying, “he does
not listen to me”, “he is never home”, or anything of
that nature.
So state your case, allow her to be mature enough
to do what is right and ensure that you are doing your
part, so there is no excuse for her to step out on you.

The Perfect Walk
As frustrating as it is to park in Road Town these
days, I’ve come up with the ideal solution: park on the
outskirts of town and walk. This is my new exercise
regimen; it saves gym fees and eliminates the pain of
aerobics. It avoids knee injuries incurred when jog-
ging, decreases the stress of returning to my car to
find an SUV parked behind it, and the frustration of
snaking through Road Town behind an a interminable
line of cars – also looking for that perfect space.
So, now I just walk. I scout for the parking space
as far from my destination as possible, a place so
remote that there is no need to block my car. The ben-
efits to walking are endless. Even the Mayo Clinic says
so. “It is a gentle, low impact exercise that can ease
you into a higher level of fitness and health,” they say.
“It’s safe, simple” and here’s the part I like best, “it
doesn’t require practice.” Practice (or lack of it) is one
reason why I never excelled at most sports.
Fortunately, I am great at walking. Walking lowers bad
cholesterol (LDL) and raises the good one (HDL). It
reduces blood pressure and the risk of type 2 dia-
betes. Walking helps manage weight, improves one’s
mood and keeps you strong and fit.
Besides walking in town, I also walk along Long
Bay Beach at West End. This stretch of white sand bor-
dered by a palm grove on one side and silvery blue
sea on the other inspires me with its beauty, especial-
ly when I walk in late afternoon as the sun sets. I’m not
the only one on Long Bay at this time of day and my
pace is often slowed down by chats with acquaintanc-
es or the occasional hotel guest. But this also is good
since fostering social relationships is beneficial for
both mental well-being and good health.
When it comes to walking, the Mayo Clinic recom-
mends setting a realistic goal. Although more would
be better, 30 minutes, five days a week is acceptable
for most people. They suggest making it fun and vary-
ing the routine. This is easy to accomplish in the BVI,
where almost every walk, whether it’s on Long Bay or
Sage Mountain, is a visual feast. And in the week, I’ll
continue to walk around Road Town, reaping the ben-
efits while decreasing the stress.

Out of AfricaBy Jan Critchley
If you are looking for a good classic romantic
drama, then this is a film that rainy, Sunday after-
noons are made for. Directed and produced by
Sydney Pollack, the film was released in 1985 and
won a staggering 28 film awards including seven
Academy Awards.
The story begins in 1913 in Denmark, when Karen
Dinesen (Meryl Streep) asks her friend Baron Bror
Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) to enter into a mar-
riage of convenience with her and the two plan to
move to Africa and open a dairy farm.
Upon her arrival, Karen marries Bror in a brief cer-
emony, thus becoming Baroness Blixen. She meets
and befriends various other colonial residents, and
she also meets Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford),
a local big-game hunter with whom she develops a
close friendship.
Bror decides to invest in a coffee plantation,
instead of the dairy farm that was first intended but
he shows little interest, preferring instead to become
a game hunter. Karen is distressed when she learns of
his extramarital affairs and to make matters worse,
she contracts syphilis from her philandering husband
and is forced to return to Denmark for a long and dif-
ficult period of treatment.
After she has recovered and returns to Africa, it
becomes clear that her marriage to the womanizing
Bror is over and she asks him to move out of their
house. Her friendship with Denys develops further
and the two eventually become lovers during an
unbelievably romantic safari trip. However, despite
many unsuccessful attempts to turn their affair into a

lasting relationship, she realizes that Denys is as
impossible to own or tame as Africa itself. Although he
moves into her house, he does not understand her
desire to “own” things and refuses to commit to mar-
riage telling her that he will not love her more because
of a piece of paper.
So Karen throws herself into opening a school for
the local children and running the plantation and
although it finally yields a good harvest, a devastating
fire breaks out and the entire crop is destroyed. Now
broke and alone again, Karen prepares to leave Africa
to return home to Denmark, however, Denys visits her
and the two of them have one last dance. It is clear
that the love between them is still strong, but will she
be strong enough to survive what lies ahead?

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway in London
In another eight days, the London 2012 Olympic
Games – the quadrennial sporting spectacle – opens
with billions globally tuned into the opening cere-
monies.
Frenchman and modern Olympic Games founder
Pierre de Coubertin, said the essence of the Games
isn’t about winning medals, but taking part. Except for
the inaugural venture in 1984, never over the last 28
years has there been such a level of community con-
sciousness about the Olympic Games. In an era of
tougher qualifying standards, with a 2000 track and
field athletes quota, you have to earn your spot to be
among the world’s best athletes from the 204 nations
who can field competitors in the quadrennial event.
You’ve dedicated an awful lot of time and energy,
made lots of sacrifice, go through physical and emo-
tional training and concentrated effort to get to the
Olympic Games. Then you come up short. Ah, the
Olympic dream!
Two years out, there was the possibility of six BVI
athletes in two sports – athletics and sailing the only
two ever to field athletes in the Olympic Games – hav-
ing participants. In pursuing their Olympic dreams, a
variety of things can happen, among them injuries or
realizing that making the weight in a class would be
impossible.
But for a country of 30,000 inhabitants to have
four athletes with their Olympic dream alive 19 days
before the opening ceremony, with performances
ranging from thirteen to thirty seven hundreds of a
second from qualifying, is remarkable.
Along the way, there was the historic element in
the balance – that the delegation could be comprised
of all women which would have been a first.
Regulations however, gives equal opportunities to
the sexes to be part of the Olympic Games from any
country that has an Olympic Committee.
In our case, we had one female qualifier with four
other hopefuls. Therefore, one unqualified male was
eligible to participate in a running event except the
Marathon – but would have to qualify if they were in a
field event – Discus, Shot Put or Javelin for example.
The same holds true if men were the qualifiers, one
unqualified female was eligible to participate.
At 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the Olympic Games Village,
athletes Tahesia Harrigan-Scott and J’Maal Alexander
