This teaching resource includes 32 printable task cards that cover the skill of converting customary
units of measurement. These cards can be used by students working alone, with partners, in teams,
in math centers, or in small guided math groups. The task cards are also perfect for whole group
formative assessment activities. There are two levels of task cards, sold separately. The blue Level 1
task cards in this set are aligned with the 4th grade CCSS and only include problems involving the
conversion of larger units of measurement into smaller ones. The orange Level 2 task cards are
aligned with the 5th grade CCSS and include more advanced conversion problems. Both products
include 10 bonus task cards which can be used to assess prior knowledge. Recording forms and
answer keys are included, too, as well as color and black & white versions of the task cards.
Assessing Prior Knowledge with Basic Units Task Cards Before students can learn to convert between different units of
measurement, they must first know the basic units of length, weight, and
liquid volume. For example, before they can calculate how many inches
are in 3 feet, they must already know that 1 foot equals 12 inches. Use
the 10 Basic Units of Measurement task cards to conduct a quick
formative assessment to check their understanding of these concepts.
The Basic Units of Measurement Teacher’s Guide and the yellow task
cards on the right are located in a separate folder in your product zip
file. These resources include printable task cards, digital task cards you
can project onto a whiteboard, and two interactive Google Slides task
card presentations. Use the task cards or Google Slides presentations to
quiz your students on basic customary units of conversion.
Effective and Engaging Task Card Strategies 1. Team Scoot - Team Scoot is an exciting cooperative learning activity that gets the whole class up
and moving around the room as they solve problems. To find the complete directions, click over
to my blog and read Team Scoot - A New Twist on an Old Favorite. For this activity, you’ll
need one set of task cards for the class and one recording form for each student.
2. Showdown - Showdown is another fun and effective cooperative learning
strategy. Students remain seated so it’s a less active than Scoot, but still very
engaging. Each team will need a set of task cards, and each student will
need a dry erase board and marker. Click over to my blog and read Show
What You Know for step-by-step directions.
3. Formative Assessment (Document Camera) - A quick and easy way to assess skills with task cards
is to display each task card, one at a time, under a document camera and project the image onto
a screen or whiteboard. Ask your students to solve the problems or answer the questions on
individual dry erase boards, and hold them up for you to check.
