SUFFRAGETTES LESSON 3- PROPAGANDA POSTERS
PROPAGANDA POSTERS
Without TV, radio or social media, the suffragettes use propaganda posters to help
change people’s minds about women getting the vote.
PROPAGANDA- information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote
a political cause or point of view:
THERE WERE EVEN ANTI-SUFFRAGETTE POSTERS!
WORLD WAR I
In 1914, as the First World War began, Emmeline Pankhurst stopped the activities of the Women's Social and Political Union to concentrate her efforts on helping the government recruit women into war work. Many other suffrage organisations did the same and suspended campaigning to help with the war effort.
Life for women changed a lot
because men were away at
war. Many women took paid
jobs outside the home for the
first time. By 1918 there were
five million women working
in Britain. The money they
earned helped the family's
budget and they made new
friends in the factory, office
or shop.

The involvement of women in the war effort helped to
change perceptions of women and their role in British
society.
During the war, women carried out jobs normally
undertaken by men and proved they could do the
work just as well.
Between 1914 and 1918, an estimated two million
women replaced men in employment.

Women proved that they were capable of jobs
beyond those in traditionally 'female' roles, such as
domestic work. However, employers still deemed
that women's work was worth less than men's and
their wage packets did not match men's even for
the same jobs.
Shop workers were paid around half as much.
Teachers earned less than 80 per cent of a man's
salary.
However, this time helped to strengthen
the arguments for women’s right to vote.
IN 1918 MANY WOMEN OVER THE AGE OF 30 WERE GIVEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE.
STILL NOT EQUAL TO MEN WHO COULD VOTE AT 21.....BUT IT WAS A START!
TASK
Create your own propaganda poster, campaigning
for women to get the vote. Consider using women’s
role in the war effort to help you. As with other
posters we have seen, try to use humour, clear
images and snappy slogans. You are trying to
persuade people and make people change their
minds!
You are trying to show people that women are
strong, intelligent and equal to men and deserve to
have a say!
