Context• c50% Pupil Premium in each year group• All year groups bar one sig- KS2• All previous inspections: grade 3• 5ACEM 2011-13: 40+%• 5ACEM 2014: 29%• Principal left Oct 2014• Interim Nov – May • Ofsted arrived June
Inspection outcome June 2016• L&M grade 4• T&L grade 4• Achievement grade 4• Behaviour & safety grade 3• Sixth Form grade 3• Overall effectiveness grade 4• Special measures• Advised not to appoint NQTs
Areas for action• L&M• T&L • Sixth Form• Pupil Premium Review• External Review of Governance
• Statement of Action to address the above
What next?• Inspection carried out under old framework• Report (eventually) published under new
framework • New framework says first visit between three
and six months later – (After inspection? After report?)
• Unclear how many inspectors or for how long
The process• Lead HMI
– Same HMI throughout process– Relationship between HT and Lead HMI crucial
• Not advisory, but very close working relationship• Plus an HMI and an OI (this time)• Two days (this time)• Can be up to 6 visits over next 24 months• What then?
What are they looking for?• Effective action• Only two judgements:
– Are/ Are not taking effective action towards the removal of special measures
• Not looking at all areas at once:– “Not as full on as Section 5”– If good, probably won’t be looked at next time– Evidence accumulates
• Leadership & management
Lines of enquiry• Relationships between leaders at all levels• Safeguarding• Leadership of T&L and assessment• Ensure that all groups make good progress• Statement of Action
Our areas of focus• Leadership & management
– SLT– GB– MLs– External support– Statement of Action
• Fit for purpose• Impact• All SLT to be very familiar with it
– Other strategic docs
Our areas of focus• Safeguarding
– SCR– Attendance for day and previous week– Alt Ed– Safeguarding referrals– Bullying, racism, homophobia– Seclusion room– Students on FTE and for previous week– Ask students if they feel safe
Our areas of focus• Teaching and learning
– Learning walks: max 15 mins per lesson• Little feedback
– Talk to students more than look at teacher– Books must be marked (“feedbacked”)– Impact of feedback on progress– Consistency of practice– No preferred style
Team Meetings• HT attends
– Bring someone with you to take notes– More openly parcipitative than Section 5– Generates pointers for day two
• Final feedback meeting more detailed than Section 5
Outcomes• Letter
– Judgement (Are/ Are not taking effective action towards the removal of special measures)
– Report (5 pages)• Next visit next term• If subsequent visit provides evidence that
judgement might be “good”, converted to S5• Not likely to remove special measures until it is
looking “good”
wThank you
Enjoy the rest of the meeting!
