THE ARCHITECT Charles Garnier designed the Palais
Garnier. Built from 1861-1875.
WHY WAS IT BUILT? Designed as part of the reconstruction of Paris during the
Second Empire. This reconstruction was ordered by Emperor Napolean III. Operas were held there.
FUN FACTS 1. Charles Garnier was hired to design and build the
Palais Garnier after winning an architectural design competition.
2. Charles Garnier also designed a 7-ton bronze and crystal chandelier. During a performance, one of the counterweights fell and killed an audience member.
