M oving home is a stressfulexperience and that’s a fact. It’sexpensive and tiring and you
lose stuff. I know this only too well.Over the years I have lost so muchstuff that it makes me want toweep. Mind you, I like a good weep.I spent Saturday morning cryingover the demise of Schmeichel – Iknow, how sad am I?
I decided to lift my mood by doinga spot of baking. I don’t know what itis about baking but it’s the best kind oftherapy I know: soothing, focusing andwith the reward of foodietreats at the end.
With the imminent arrival ofa coeliac friend for lunch I wasin pursuit of the perfect glutenfree pudding. I wanted adessert that looked and tastedsinful but one that she couldeat without risk of her throatclosing and her lips lookinglike Tina Turner’s in full pout.
The answer came in theform of a mad recipe, Spanishin origin I believe, that involvedboiling and pulping oranges. Ifound several variants online but finally settled on one from the BBC website.
Now baking is a messy business, and I have to confess to being a messycook, but this recipe stretched the concept of mess. I have never seen somany pans, bowls, whisks and spoons needed to make one cake. The kitchenlooked like Armageddon and I was covered from head to toe in gloop andground almonds with a fine meringue topping.
Eventually I had measured, boiled whisked and folded, and I had a finelooking and tasting batter ready for the baking tin and hence, to the oven.
It was only then that I realised I had not seen any of my baking tins andmoulds since the move. I opened draws, rummaged in cupboards but theywere, like mother Hubbard’s, bare. Somewhere along the line I have misplaceda huge plastic hopper filled with a fine assortment of cake tins and moulds.
The cake though is worth the effort, despite the mess and time involved,and it went down a treat. I only wish I still had my cake tins because it didntlook as good as it might have, having been baked in a roasting tin.

T he Seaside Smile, asperformed by musichall artiste Vesta Tilley,
would have been anappropriate accompanimentto the recent grand unveilingof two commemorativeplaques at St Aubyn’sMansions in Hove.
Vesta Tilley was once aresident of St Aubyn’sMansions as was DameClara Butt. The unveilingceremony in August to showoff the two new blueplaques to commemoratethe ladies’ respective stays at the buildingwas carried out by the Deputy Mayor, CllrGeoff Wells, and was, indeed, a funoccasion. It was not until afterwardsthough that it was discovered that Vesta’splaque featured an incorrect date.
St Aubyn’s Mansions is the mustard-coloured mansion block on the Hove seafrontadjacent to the King Alfred site. It was built in1899 to the designs of Lainson & Sons as part ofan ambitious scheme that was never completed. Itconsists of four principal floors with two flatsper floor; eight in total.
“Vesta Tilley (Lady de Frece) 1864 – 1952Music Hall Artiste Lived Here” is the inscriptionon the plaque to the right of the building’s frontdoor. Vesta bought 8 St Aubyn’s Mansions, onthe top floor, in 1947, aged 83, as a holidayhome. She became ‘Lady de Frece’ when herhusband, the music hall owner Walter de Frece,was knighted in 1919 for services to the wareffort. The couple’s honeymoon after their marriage in 1890 was spent at theGrand Hotel in Brighton and Clara regularly performed at the Hippodrome onMiddle Street.
“Dame Clara Butt (1872-1936) Recitalist and Concert Singer Lived Here”reads the inscription on the plaque to the left. Dame Clara lived in 4 St Aubyn’sMansions, on the first floor, from 1903 to around 1906 with her husband,Kennerly Rumford. Her grand piano was kept in their large hallway.
The plaques were paid for by both the residents of St Aubyn’s Mansion andBrighton & Hove City Council. Thankfully, the type of commemorative plaquefavoured by the council weathers well. The two St Aubyn’s plaques need to beextremely durable. After all, St Aubyn’s Mansions is one of the closestbuildings to the sea in the whole of the city.
November saw the replacement of Dama Clara’s first plaque with a secondwhich states her correct birth date of ‘1872’ instead of ‘1848’. I certainlysmiled. Perhaps Vesta was looking on with a smile too – a ‘Seaside Smile’.Get in touch: [email protected] or www.buildingopinions.com
A s a fairly proficient landlady, I am often rather alarmed when I hear abouttenants living in squalid and potentially dangerous properties, who aretoo afraid to challenge their respective landlords about their living
conditions. In some cases, the local council have to get involved and force thelandlord into rectifying these issues. Perhaps many tenants do not realise thatthe law is very much on their side and they should not have to tolerate whatamounts to bullying behaviour from their landlords. As a person who seems totraditionally end up running the freeholds of various properties, I know only toowell how disinterested many landlords are in their rental portfolios, as long asthe money keeps rolling in. For example, I am organising the painting of theCommunal Hallway in Hastings at the moment and have had no response fromfellow lessees regarding what colour I should paint below the dado...
Taking all the above into consideration, I was rather alarmed to this weekdiscover a potential time-bomb ticking away in my own house. I awoke onTuesday morning to three missed calls from the tenant who rents the groundfloor flat in my house. I always switch my phone off at night to deflect potentialcalls from deeply unsavoury friends of mine who often telephone from the Lionand Lobster to urge me to go down there, which always ends in (my) tears.
With each call, my tenant left increasingly frantic messages. I boltedstraight down there as soon as I received the messages to find out exactlywhat had gone on. Apparently, my tenant had been awoken at 2.30am by thesound of ‘roaring flames’. Under furtherinspection, there were indeed roaringflames shooting up from behind theback of the cooker. The tenant quicklythrew water onto the flames and put thefire out, then called the emergencyservices as she could smell gas. Theemergency gas people came out anddiscovered that a live wire behind thegas cooker had been arcing off the gassupply pipe and had eventually melted it, then set fire to it. What are thechances of that? To put it in perspective, it is the equivalent of lighting a livegas supply in the middle of a pile of wood.
The scary thing is that the live wire must have been there since I boughtthe flat in 1999. I have had at least eight gas safety checks since then, whichhaven’t picked up on the problem. Scarier still, the tenant had been away forthe two days prior to the conflagration and had only returned that evening. Itdoesn’t bear thinking about what would have happened had she not beenthere, as although I have smoke alarms in my flat, they wouldn’t have gone off until the entire ground floor had burnt out. Fortunately, I was able to getthe gas supply back on and the offending wire removed the same day. Mytenant and I agree that we must have some sort of angels watching over us...

I once met Chewbacca in a caravan. Well, that isn’t strictly true. I wasn’t ina caravan, but he was, and I queued up outside to get his autograph. Thiswas at a village fete in 1978. Queuing also featured when I went to see
Return Of The Jedi, and we arrived late at the cinema for The Empire StrikesBack. With films not being shown for ages on TV after they were released, itwas another seven years before I saw the first 20 minutes. My memories ofThe Phantom Menace are too fresh (and painful) to talk about.
All of these recollections are overshadowed by the frequency with whichStar Wars has intruded in The Boy’s lifetime. The DVDs came out in the weekof his birth – I watched them through bleary-eyed tiredness – and from thatmoment, the whole galaxy has never been very far away at all.
I owe this column to Star Wars too. I speculatively sent in a short pieceabout explaining badly to a four year old which order the films came in. Theeditor said she liked it, and contacted me four months later asking if I wantedto write a column.
Over the two and a half years I’ve been writing Distracted Dad, I’d guessthat Darth Vader is mentioned in eleven different columns, Star Wars in abouttwenty five. Just for comparison, France gets two mentions, and world povertyjust the one (in my column on “pastry”).
The Star Wars universe is how The Boymeasures the future. He grades his owngrowing up in terms of lego modelsthat are becoming within his agerange, and knows that 12 iswhen he can – legally – watchRevenge Of The Sith. It is alsoThe Boy’s small talk. Onlytoday, he’s asked mecomplicated questionsabout Grand Moff Tarkinas we headed forSouthwick Square. I’vealso this week listenedas The Boy discussedthe pros and cons ofminor characters. E.G Kit Fisto (yes, exactly, who’s heard of him?)
Star Wars also marks outthe year. Halloween hasbeen influenced. Onecostume was the RancorMonster, complete withauthentic twig that getsstuck in his mouth, andanother costume, DarthVader (No.1 choice for the last couple of years).
Christmas too doesn‘t get off scott-free. The Boy was lucky enough tomeet Father Christmas on a train carriage once. He was silent as FatherChristmas asked a number of questions: “Do you have a chimney?”, “Haveyou been good?” etc, but he did offer up his only two words when askedwhat he wanted for Christmas. Very deliberately, The Boy announced:“General Grievous”.
I ’ve already bought myChristmas presents.What’s wrong with me?
That’s when you knowyou’re getting older... Onceupon a time, I’d be soembroiled in Christmaspartying I’d buy whateverwas left in the shops onChristmas Eve! Hang on, isthis getting old or am Igetting smart? After all, I’vebought all my presentsdiscounted, in the ‘sales’.(when isn’t there a sale onthese days?... Gotta love arecession!) I’ve savedmyself a fortune; well,probably enough to pay forall the stuff I ended upbuying myself whileshopping for others... It waslike a game of “one for them,one for me, one for them...”
To be honest myChristmas shopping started off as “one for me, one for me” but I managedto adapt it eventually and present shopping is done. What I’m learningthough, is that if you buy presents too early you just end up seeing morestuff weeks later and spending more!
I’m single handedly keeping the economy going. I’ve found a ‘Hello Kitty’coat I bought in June for my child’s birthday in August, I somehow forgotabout... I hid it so well even I couldn't find it. How much stuff should onebuy a child for Christmas? I don’t want to spoil her but I want her to feellike something special is happening. Maybe if I let her eat biscuits on thesofa she’ll know it’s Christmas! Maybe if I don’t bark at her to wearsomething warm she’ll know it’s Christmas. “Take those flip-flops off! Itsnot summer/your birthday/Christmas!” I want to hide the flip-flops; theyare the bain of my life. She wants to wear them 24/7. It’s November, it’s onedegree out there in open-toe land. She should wear a T-shirt that says “I’mnot cold” she says it so often. Well I am. So I bought a woolly hat and shesweetly says: “Can I wear it?” She gets so hot in it, she takes off her coatwhich I then have to carry, while walking home with my cold ears.
I then buy myself gloves (while Christmas shopping for everyone else;“One for me, one for them”). My daughter spots my gloves: “Can I wearthem?” Of course, I had no idea ‘Miss Hot All Year’ needed them. They areblack and fingerless. My daughter now looks like a market stall holder.When we get home she does pull ups off the wrought iron bed. She lookslike a boxer preparing for a match. I try to claim my gloves back but shesays she likes them – “except I would like them with finger bits on.” So I tellher I will buy her some kids’ mitts with finger bits and I try to get mineback. “No I want these!” Grrr. If you are buying me a Christmas presentplease buy something my five year old can't borrow.

Tocounter this, we hope that our‘What’s Hot’ periodic updates willhelp with the necessity of keepingup to date; and on that note here’sour latest review.
This is hotReasonable excuseThe law says that the penalty forsubmitting a late self-assessmenttax return may be rescinded wherethere is ‘reasonable excuse’. Nosurprise that HMRC’s opinion ofreasonable excuse is fairly biased,but in a recent tribunal one judgesaid of the taxman that his action“smacks more of the conduct of adisreputable debt collector than ofresponsible conduct by an organ ofthe state”. Pretty strong stuff. HMRCwill hopefully re-think its position asa result, so consider appealing apenalty if you have good reason.
Entrepreneur’s ReliefUntil recently, the sale of yourcompany in exchange for sharesand other securities in the takeovercompany was ignored for CGTpurposes on the grounds of it beinga ‘paper-for-paper’ transaction. Theproblem then arose that any sale ofnew shares was potentially liable to28 per cent CGT. The good news isthat recent tax changes mean youcan now elect to dis-apply the ruleand take advantage of 10 per centEntrepreneur’s Relief.

This is notWrong PAYE CodeOperating the wrong tax code for an employee is one mistake thatcrops up frequently and whichHMRC will use to make you liable forany underpaid taxes. Inform HMRCthat you are correcting on a ‘week1/month 1’ basis if you spot amistake as this avoids a big tax hitfor your employee and contactingHMRC should demonstratereasonable care.
New penalty rulesThe taxman continues to whittleaway at increasing his penaltyregime of indirect tax collectionthrough the back door. In his latestinitiative he has withdrawn thezero-penalty for a late 31 Octoberpaper tax return where there is notax liability and future late paper-nil-returns will be subject to the£100 penalty.
And finally…Thinking about 2011, we startedin recession, rallied slightly, and now look set to exit going into another one. Despite all this,though, there is still good reasonto be ebullient. Money may betight but this can often be a verygood time to start or ramp-up a business. There are alwaysopportunities... and often more so in a downward economy.
