BE THE CHURCH
June 1st is likely to pass as a very quiet anniversary in the life of our congregation,
but to me, to countless parents, and to hundreds of children, June 1st is a really
important day. June 1st will mark the 10th Anniversary of Miss. Kristen’s ministry
as our Nursery Director.
Please don’t let the significance of this special day escape you. Our church is
blessed beyond belief to have Kristen with us, especially for a whole decade now.
When our family first moved to Kirkwood, my son was 11-months old. Like all
parents, we were unsure and cautious about leaving such a little one in the nursery.
Miss. Kristen embraced him immediately, gently teaching him, loving him, and
helping him to grow in faith --- all before he even turned 1! To the Lees, Miss.
Kristen is family!
Miss. Kristen has done the same exact thing for almost every child in this
congregation for the last ten years. She marks all of their milestones --- first steps,
first smiles, first words, first days of school, and especially birthdays. At
Christmas, she helps these little ones make precious and priceless gifts for their
parents and even includes some photographs that she’s captured when we weren’t
looking. She has come out from the nursery to attend birthday parties and recitals
all over Bradenton and she is a fervent prayer warrior for our little ones. Being the
Nursery Director is not just a job to Miss. Kristen, it’s a ministry and it’s one of the
most important ministries that we will ever have as a church.
Think about what happens in the life of a child in 10 years. The infants that she
started with will begin middle school in the fall! Miss. Kristen’s ministry is one
that upholds part of the promise that we make to our children in baptism --- that
from the cradle, we will do everything we can to help them grow into the love of
Christ. She stands at the starting line of our little one’s faith journeys and is an
incredible teacher and cheerleader for them.
Despite the fact that Miss. Kristen has been here longer than any other current staff
member, she is so quiet and so humble that much of our congregation has never
had the chance to meet her. But, it is very important that we take this time to
recognize her and give her our thanks for starting our smallest disciples out on the
right foot of faith!

Continued from page 1
Whether or not you’ve had a child whose life has been touched by the ministry of Miss. Kristen, we want to
encourage the entire congregation to reach out and say “thank you!” Her ministry is not just a benefit to the
entire church, it is a gift to the Kingdom of God. Would you please take a few minutes this month and send
Miss. Kristen a card of thanksgiving and encouragement?

We love you, Miss. Kristen! Thanks for making KPC such a wonderful place for the little children to come!
"Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to
such as these." Matthew 19:14
In the Grip of Grace,
P.S. BIG NEWS!! This winter, MISS. Kristen becomes MRS. Kristen! Congratulations!

LET THE CHILDREN COME
“The golden gift of childhood lasts a lifetime if you try
The simple trusting faith they hold keeps scholars mystified
And so the Lord adopts us as His daughters and His sons
The Kingdom is for Children
So please let the children come
Let the children come
Don't dare drive them away
And then the kingdom comes
Hear the holy, foolish things they say
The springtime of their life decides
the adults they'll become
So let the children come
Please let the children come.”
~ Michael Card
CONGRATULATIONS to KPC’s newest elders . . .
E. DENNIS OSTHOLTHOFF
I’m a native Cincinnatian where I belonged to Pilgrim United Church of
Christ all my life. I enjoyed my years in scouting where I rose to Eagle
Scout and received the Order of the Arrow award. I came to Florida as
a snowbird in 2006 and have been attending Kirkwood ever since. Now
that I am no longer a snowbird I decided several years ago to become a
member. I have a wonderful sister, Dana, her husband Richard and
their children, my nephew and niece. I am also uncle to my 6 year old
grandniece, Zoe.
I taught in a local school district for 35 years, and I coached girl’s bas-
ketball and softball for many years. I played many different sports,
some of my favorites were tennis, basketball, baseball and golf. How-
ever, golf is the only sport I currently participate in and might I add . . .
am not so good. I cheer for the Reds (they need a lot of help), the Ben-
gals and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. I was on the board of Teacher’s Annuity & Aid Association for
14 years, an organization that helps retired teachers.
Having never married, I dote on my nephew and niece who are like my own children. I am looking forward to
serve as an Elder on Session.
Why it is important to me to be serving the Kirkwood Church in this way . . .
The Church … this Church … is important. Providing funds to keep doors open is important. That is why I
pledge. Having people to serve as Christ’s hands and feet to carry out the programs of the Church and to serve
this needy world is important that is why I became an Elder.

TAYLOR BERKEY
I am a 24 year old Certified Dental Assistant and worship team member at The Well. I was adopted from
Asuncion, Paraguay by a single mother and I have been attending Kirkwood for 22 years.
Why it is important to me to be serving the Kirkwood Church in this way . . .
Serving on session is important to me because I have seen Kirkwood through all its ups and downs over the
years and watching the church grow and evolve to what it is is one of the greatest things in the world, I only
want it to get better and be a part of the journey.
BOB FREDERICKS
I moved to Florida from Wayne, New Jersey in 1976 with my par-
ents and have been a member of Kirkwood for thirty five years.
Actually, I started in the Girls Club days! My daughter was the
first child born in the congregation.
Why it is important to me to be serving the Kirkwood Church in
this way . . .
Because I love being a member and I enjoy serving the Church.

CAROL SCHULZE
I am a retired Nursery School teacher and worker from the phone
company. Originally from New York, I worked for the phone
company there. After moving to Florida, I worked for the phone
company in Sarasota and at a church preschool for about ten
years.
Why it is important to me to be serving the Kirkwood Church in
this way . . .
With Joy in my heart I take this office. My anticipation of this
job is looking forward to things in the life of this Church.
DAN BROCKMAN
I was born a long time ago in Independence, Missouri. I grew up
with my Mother, Sister and Grandparents. At age 23 years I left
home to serve in the US Army Intelligence Corps. Serving in Augus-
ta, GA I met a very beautiful lady with whom I fell in love. This was
February 1966, five months before my discharge. The day after dis-
charge she and I were married. Together with her two children we
moved back to Independence where we lived until 1986 when we
moved to Florida. A few years back we discovered Kirkwood and
Pastor Hope and found our new Church home.
"Why is it important to me to be serving the Kirkwood Church in this
way . . .
As an Elder at Kirkwood I will be available to the Church and to the
members of the Church as needed, as well as representing the Church
at various functions. This will bring me closer not only to Kirkwood,
but to our Lord, making me a better Christian.
Finance Team Report
A few weeks ago, Pastor Hope stood before the elders of 3 different churches as they gathered in our fellowship hall for a meeting. She started to explain all that was happening in the life of our church and the vision that we have to continually be expanding our mission and outreach to our community. She talked about lives that are being transformed in our congregation through preaching, through prayer, through opportunities to serve and be in community. An elder from one of the other congregations asked about the size of our budget. When we told them (and it was less than 1/3 of the other churches) the elders were in complete awe of what God
has been able to do in this place in spite of our financial circumstances.
Last week the Finance Team was meeting when a whole group of middle school students walked by the office windows. That group met up with other kids inside and by the end of the evening almost 40 students had been fed and took the opportunity to learn about
God and His work in their lives. This place changes lives every single day!
We cannot do it at such a high level without the continued support of all participants in the life of the church. It takes $34,000 a month to meet our very basic budget. In the month of April, those contributions came to $28,783. Sacrifices were made on the parts
of our staff and the ministries they lead so that our insurance premium and our mission commitments could be honored.
As we plan for the future, including an expansion of staff that will benefit both children and adults, we need to know that congregation is with us and is just as excited about God’s vision for our church as we are. We believe that passion will reveal itself in our giving.
“Where your heart is, there your treasure shall be also.” Matthew 6:21.
Our prayer is that your heart will be with God’s heart as we work together to be a witness for Christ in this community!

Our Daily Bread
On April 24, twelve volunteers (including five Girl Scouts and their leader) served up love and 175 meals at Our Daily Bread (ODB). So far this year, our ODB teams have volunteered 75 hours while feeding 530 hungry people in our area. Thanks to April’s team for including our Girl Scouts and helping them understand this
ministry! Also, we appreciate Robbin West for her years of dedicated leadership for our ODB teams! This summer we are grateful for volunteers who will step up to keep the ODB teams organized. Our church sends a team to serve meals on the fourth Sunday of the month and anyone is welcome to participate. The only requirements are to go with a loving heart and to wear closed toe shoes. Volunteers serve at ODB from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. Sign up today to join the team. Serve others and be blessed!
Monthly Mission Cart Collections
The April Mission Cart collection for Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities was estimated to value $424.43. Thank you to each KPC missionary (you know who you are!) who contributed to the needs of this local nonprofit.
June’s collection will be dedicated to Turning Points. Turning Points provides a remarkable variety of services designed to assist families and individuals on their path to financial stability and independence. Turning Points is the one stop shop for preventing and ending homelessness in our community. We provide day resource services (such as hot showers, laundry services, clothing, and food), employment services, rental and utility assistance, veteran’s services (employment, housing and childcare), and free medical and dental care for the uninsured and underinsured. A total of 9,645 people received help last year with critical services targeted to the essential needs of people in crisis. Turning Points can only provide this high standard of service because of our caring, compassionate volunteers and strong community support. The donations that we receive from Kirkwood make a positive difference for the men, women and children who are struggling with issues of homelessness. Their clients need: gently used men, women and children’s jeans & children’s clothing & small blankets, NEW socks & underwear, insect repellent, trial size toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, large shampoo, baby diapers sizes 3 - 6, books, & toys. At this time there is a desperate need for men’s NEW underwear (briefs and boxers) and men’s NEW socks. This is their biggest need at the current time.
We are especially grateful to all who cleaned out their cupboards and donated nonperishables to the Our Daily Bread’s Food Bank. Our special Spring Cleaning collection filled eight large boxes and was estimated in value at over $1,000, bringing our year to date Mission Cart Collections to $2,898.50. Each donation means that through God’s grace, one more person receives something they need. This special springtime in-house collection has ended.
Check the office bulletin board for other mission updates. The pace will slow down during the summer to allow time for planning for next Fall. Contact Carolyn to share your mission ideas.
Keeping you in prayer!

We need your help! As we transition to new leadership for our Our Daily
Bread (ODB) volunteers who serve meals on the fourth Sunday of every
month, we have become aware of a simple way those interested in this
mission opportunity can make the monthly preparations less stressful and
more time efficient. No matter if you have been going to Our Daily
Bread every month for years or are just exploring the experience for the
first time, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE sign up either at The Well, in
the Narthex, or the office! This gives us correct contact information read-
ily in our hands and eliminates last minute calls by our leaders to try to
recruit more necessary volunteers. Just sign up and be blessed and be a
blessing to work with!

Middle School Youth Group
Our middle school youth group will meet on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, from 6 to 7:15 pm, in
Pfrangle Hall. Ms. Debbie, Ms. Karen, Reid, Ron and Barbara Prete, and others will be there
to help the students learn about faith in Jesus and other great questions middle schoolers ask!
We will have dinner, games, and biblical teaching on life for middle schoolers! This will be
our last meeting of the school year, and then we transition to the summer schedule, with our
three trips.
High School Youth Group
Our high school youth group will meet on Wednesday, June 1, from 6:45 to 8 pm, in Pfrangle
Hall. The volunteer team and Reid will help make dinner, and lead the games and learning
about faith in Jesus! This will also be our last meeting of the school year, and then we transi-
tion to the summer schedule, with the high school mission trip as the first expedition, depart-
ing Kirkwood on June 17, and returning to the church late on June 24, 2016.
High School Mission Trip
This year, the church is sending nine high school students from Kirkwood to Taylorsville,
North Carolina, from June 17-24, 2016. The high school mission team will be serving in kids
clubs, doing construction and painting projects on local homes, helping with a nutrition pro-
gram, and partnering with local ministries. They are very grateful for your prayers, and for
your financial partnership to make this mission trip possible for them. Reid, plus Robert and
Debbie Zanders, will be the adult leaders on the trip, so please don’t forget to pray for them,
too. Please pray specifically for the safety and health of every single member of the mission
team. We can’t wait to report on what the Lord does in and through our lives when we get
back to Kirkwood!
Middle School Great Escape Camp
The church is sending some of our middle school students with Pastors Hope and Reid to
Great Escape, on the edge of Long Lake at the base of Florida’s beautiful Ocala National For-
est, July 28-August 2, 2016. There our students will meet up with hundreds of middle school
students from around the country for an awesome week of music, speakers, high energy
games and activities, and mealtimes with current and brand new friends they will meet there!
Please pray that each and every student has an awesome weeklong experience that will be in-
strumental in their young faith lives.

Surf and Serve 2016
We are so excited about our third year doing the Surf and Serve middle school outreach!
We are running this outreach experience from July 11 through July 15, 2016, from 9 am to
5 pm each day, departing from and returning to Kirkwood. We are excited to reach some
brand new Sugg Middle School students, as well as current Sugg students involved at
Kirkwood, and we need your prayers! Please pray that the teachers at Sugg would contin-
ue to encourage their students to join us, and that Nicholas Solario would be able to invite
lots of his classmates to take part in this wonderful experience of volunteering in our com-
munity in the morning, having lunch together each day, then going out to kayak with Surf-
erbus, visit MOTE Marine Laboratory for a special middle school tour, and be treated to a
special tour of the South Florida Museum by Ron and Barbara Prete and the staff there,
plus excursions to the Anna Maria Island beaches, and games and cool down activities
back at the church before 5 pm each day. If you are interested in providing sandwiches for
lunch on one of the Surf and Serve days, please let Reid know by calling 794-6229, or
emailing [email protected].

Youth Summer Trips Financial Update:
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for your generosity towards the middle and high school students connected to our
church. Without your support, we could not provide such meaningful summer camp and mis-
sion trip experiences for the students. Their families fund a significant portion of each stu-
dent’s trip, but in order to make it possible for our students to go, we as a church choose to
partner with the parents in sending the students out to serve the world, and grow in their faith
through these camp experiences. Here is an update as of 05/18/2016:
Total cost of the middle school Great Escape Camp and high school North Carolina mission
trip: $11,523 (estimate)
$1,000 budgeted
$4,005 non-fundraiser-related donations towards trips as of 05/18/2016
$5,125 payments from families of student participants
$436 sub sale fundraiser net gain
$1,112 lasagna dinner and trivia night net gain
Total income estimate as of 05/18/2016: $11,678.
Thank you for your continued generosity towards our students and investment in the next gen-
eration of students looking to follow Jesus and find their place in His kingdom.
