IT’S HERE.
The first ever Knowledge Integration eXhibition, KI-X! Your favourite third-year cohort has been sweating away the last seven months to create this object-based learning experience to share with the entire Waterloo community. Touring the exhibits, you will learn why robots may make you feel uncomfortable. Explore forms of peaceful protest and how you might get involved. Learn how limitations in math-ematical tools led to the development of new ones. Understand the impact of a concussion, and learn about other neurological phenome-na like dreams, or why some people see letters and numbers in colour. Discover how archaeologists determine the purpose of an unknown object, and have a chance to try it out yourself.

onnor Turland
So a question one m
ight be asking if you’ve been following m
y series is “W
hat are all these random things that C
onnor keeps throw
ing in his column?” Th
e answer to that question is “artifacts,” and they’re not random
. They’re artifacts specific to a transitional
shift in the cultural paradigm. I see this shift as both necessary and
desirable, and it’s gaining traction every second. With the flourishing
of open-source technology, with the groundswell for change in Egypt,
with online and offl
ine peer-to-peer technologies, it’s gaining traction. And w
ith every utterance of localization and resilience, it’s gaining traction.
Ponder this if you will:
Looking back through humanity’s existence w
e see long periods of tim
e where not a lot changes. Eventually, though, hum
ans would
undergo a drastic change in consciousness and behaviour. The deci-
sion (or necessity) to settle down and grow
food changed every-thing. Th
e adoption of machine-based m
anufacturing in the 1800’s changed everything again.
Have you ever questioned the internet? H
ave you ever contem-
plated its significance?
My guess w
ould be that the answer to this w
ould be yes for those w
ho were at adulthood already w
hen the internet was first invented,
and its also possible that they’ve taken it for granted now. Mean-
while, m
any of us who grew
up with it m
ay not have asked these questions at all.
What tim
e is it in the world? Th
is is system’s aw
areness.
Consider the w
ays in which the internet has changed our w
orld in the last 20 years. M
ight a future human look back and think of the
invention of the internet as the spark for the largest scale paradig-m
atic revolution in the history of humanity (so far)?
It would seem
that our interconnectedness and, indeed, collective intelligence m
ay be key to our survival through these challenging tim
es that we’re in, and that face us.
This is w
hy I’m w
riting. So call it what you w
ant, I’ll call it the col-laborative revolution for now.

Hello Fellow
Integrators of Know

I recently had the fantastical opportunity to participate of in a real life interdisciplinary team
project. My team
consisted of Melissa G
errard, a studier of Environm
ent Resources, Karim
Rahem
tulla, a Planner, and m
yself, an Integrator of Know
ledge. The project: T
D FEF G
o Green
Challenge. Th
e brief: find the most pressing issue inhibiting sustain-
ability at your school and make a video describing your innovative w
ay of tackling it. M
y group decided to bring the issues back a step or two
to get to the real root of the problem: people. W
e realized we had to
make sustainability a hum
an centered issue; you can give people all the recycling bins in the w
orld but to truly spark change we have to change
the way people think about the environm
ent. To do this we m
ust start by getting people back in touch w
ith nature; that is our solution. We w
ould increase green spaces on cam
pus giving people more opportunity to get
outside and enjoy nature.W
e submitted our video but now
we need your help. Th
e “People’s C
hoice” portion of the competition just opened and w
ill continue until M
arch 11, so we need you to go online, w
atch our video, then, if you like the idea, vote for it and tell all your friends about it!!! Th

KI…the new frontier. These are the voyages of the Connections Committee. Its ongoing mission: to explore new opportunities, to seek out new students, and new partnerships. To boldly grow, where no program has grown before!
As a new program, we face many challenges. We are small but mighty, we are quality and not quantity. KISS will be forming a cool new subcommittee called Connections Committee that will focus specifically on these new-program challenges, and bring in cool solutions like the problem-solvers that we are.
First meeting: Tuesday, March 22, 2011. @ENV Coffeeshop. 4pm.
Connections COmmitteeby: Ryley Kornelson
