Kinds of Network
HNC COMPUTING - Network Concepts
1
Aims
Understand the terms Client and Server
Discuss Peer to Peer Networks (Workgroup based)
Discuss Client-Server Networks (Domain based)
Gain knowledge into the difference between Workgroup based and Domain based
2
Understand the terms Client
Client
This is a computer that uses resources on the network.
A printer client for instance, is a computer that uses a network printer.
3
4
Understand the terms Server
Server
This is a computer or device with a computer hidden inside, that has resources used by other devices on the network
For example a file server is a computer that stores files used by other computers
5
Understand the terms Client and Server
The server makes resources available to the network, and a client uses the resources.
6
Peer to Peer Networks
In a peer to peer network all computers are equal.
All computers function as both the client and the server.
Peer to peer networks can be set up so that some computers only share their resources and some computers only use resources.
Each computer is administered individually
P2P –identify the benefits?

8
Client-Server Networks
Typically more expensive and difficult to set compared with peer to peer networks.
Provide more sophisticated administration and security.
All resources are managed centrally on dedicated servers.
Require a network operating system like Windows NT / Unix
Makes use of a domain to administer user groups

Client- Server – identify the benefits?
10
The difference between Workgroup based and Domain based
Peer to Peer Client-Server
Ideal size of
network is?
Good for small networks –
15 Workstations are under
Good for medium to large
network
Hardware
requirements?
No dedicated file server is
needed
At least one server is
needed
What kind of
OS is
Required?
XP HOME, Professional on
all machines
NOS is required on the
server – at OS on other
machines is limited
How much
Training is
required?
Little training is needed
users administer their own
machine
Systems administrator must
be trained
Who controls
Resources?
Each computer’s user has
control over resources
System administrator has
control over sharing
Conclusion
Gained an understanding into the terms Client and Server
Discussed Peer to Peer Networks (Workgroup based)
Discussed Client-Server Networks (Domain based)
