descent one and all honors the day setapart by the Catholic church as the feastof St Patrick the Apostle of IrelandTo them there is something sacred aboutthe day and at the same it is essentiallya day of rejoicing He is a poor Irish-man indeed who is ashamed to wear hisbit of green on St Patricks day

But the question may be asked Whydo Irishmen rejoice and show their goodhumor on the feast day of a saint of ourholy mother church It is because theyare proud to be members of the churchproud that they are descended from an ¬

cestors who received the light of faithfrom St Patrick proud of Ireland herglories and her ruins And whether itbe in Ireland in America in Canada orin the Argentine Republic whether Jt bedung the Boers of South Africa or inthe far distant Philippines on Tuesdaythere will be Irish men and women whowear their green thank God that theyare Irish and celebrate in song and storythe old land from whence they sprang

Our own immortal Thomas Daviswrote

How fierce the look these exiles wearWhore wont to be so gay

The treasured wrongs of fifty yearsAre in their hearts today

The treaty broken ere the inkWherewith twas writ could dry

Their plundered homes their ruinedshrines

Their womens parting cryTheir priesthood hunted down like

wolvesTheir country overthrown

Each looks as if revenge for allWere staked on him aloneOn St Patricks day these fierce looks

are cast aside not because they have for ¬

gotten their wrongs but because theyrejoice and are glad that they have beengranted the light of the true faith Andwho will dare rob them of their right torejoice Who will find fault with themif they sing and dance and applaudstories of the Emerald Isle

Hes all a knave or half a slave-

But a true man like you manWill fill his glass with usAs to the locall celebration of the day

it can be said that it will be fittingly ob

ARCHBISHOP IRELAND

The Associated Press Rome dispatchessay the situation with regard to the ap-pointment of Archbishop Irelandas

Cardinal is unchanged Personages ofhigh authority at the Vatican say thathis nomination is likely in two contingencies as a reward when the Philip-pine question is satisfactorily solved orin the event of his nomination beingasked for directly or indirectly by thesupreme authority of the United StatesRegarding the views of the Apostolic

Delegate at Washington as to the wis-dom of such an appointment the Vati-

can has always instructed the ApostolicDelegates to keep in touch with the

trend of public opinion Ever sinceCardinal Satolli was at Washington theVatican understood that President Cleve ¬

land would view with satisfaction thenomination of Archbishop Ireland
