Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Event
40 girls from KHS had the opportunity to attend the Women in STEM day on Thursday 8 August, held at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club. The Women in STEM event, the first of its kind for Kempsey, is part of a STEM Industry School Partnerships initiative and allowed the girls to interact with a diverse range of inspirational women from the local community (including from business, industry, tertiary, not-for-profit, ex-Kempsey HS alumni and Government) as well as from partner organisations for the STEM Industry School Partnerships (SISP) initiative. The event focused on informal, small group networking – to encourage aspirational conversations between the girls and the inspiring women – that include a common focus upon STEM. Kempsey Shire Council Mayor Liz Campbell was at the event and gave an inspirational account of her career and encouraged the girls to get involved and learn from the inspirational women present. Mid North Coast Regional Development Australia pathways officer Steve Montgomery has been working hard with KHS STEM staff and the women from local industries over the last few months and hopes that the girls who attended the event will: be inspired, motivated and empowered to achieve their personal best have a better understanding of local job opportunities for women in STEM have increased awareness of tertiary pathways into STEM careers have a stronger sense of connectedness to their local community feel supported and encouraged by their local community develop personal networks and connections with inspiring women have an increased awareness of changing STEM skills and how these relate
to future jobs

Australian Poetry Slam Workshop at KHS Library
On Thursday 8 August, 2019, KHS Library hosted Spoken Word poets Jesse Oliver and Emily
Crocker as part of the travelling Australian Poetry Slam competition. Jesse and Emily
performed their poetry and conducted a writing workshop with students from years 7-12.
Some students then went on to attend the Kempsey heat of Australian Poetry Slam at the
Kempsey Shire Library. Congratulations to KHS student Isaac Freeman who was voted
people's choice for his two minute poetry slam. It was such an awesome display of the
talent we have here on the Mid North Coast. Well done Isaac on such a great performance.

Blossoming into STEM
6 students from KHS were given the
opportunity to attend a very special STEM
event held at the Charles Sturt University
Port Macquarie Campus on Sunday 11
August. The inaugural event attracted over
250 students and 6 of KHS students who
have a keen interest in the area of STEM
were given a great opportunity to take part
in the event.
At the start of the day each girl was
given a flower to add to the STEM
flower wall to represent the
blossoming of each girls’ journey into
STEM and STEM related careers.
Throughout the day the girls were able to listen to keynote speakers, meet professionals in
the field of STEM and take part in one of twenty master classes which ranged from
medicine, technology, engineering, marine
biology and chemistry.
It is hoped that by spending the day
listening to some of the brightest, inspiring
minds in the field of STEM, young women
will be inspired to join this exciting field.
What a fantastic opportunity for some of
our students.

Sports News and Matsushige
After three consecutive wins at the Katrina Fanning Cup, held in Port Macquarie on July 24, the KHS girls team progressed to the next level. Girls rugby league continues to grow in the region and the Katrina Fanning Cup, named after an ex-Jillaroo player attracted teams from around the Hastings, Manning and Macleay regions. The next round of the Katrina Fanning Cup was held at Coffs Harbour on the 7 August and the KHS girls team came away with the overall win in their age division. They are now the Northern NSW regional champions and will represent the region at the State Finals, held in Sydney on the 19 September. Well done to the team and team managers and good luck at the State finals!

Japanese Visit
Our friends from Matsushige Junior High School
have visited us once again. Several students
accompanied by staff from Matsushige Junior
High School spent five days in Kempsey in early
August, including days at KHS with students in
classes to get an experience of Australian
schooling.
A formal assembly featured an exchange of gifts
and students singing each others’ national
anthems, before being taken to Riverside Park,
Kempsey for a BBQ lunch. Sight‐seeing occupied
the weekend with a dinner at the Kempsey
Macleay RSL and a visit to the Sculpture in the
Gaol, at South West Rocks on Sunday before their
departure. A special thanks must be extended to
the staff at KHS, in particular Mr Beard, who
looked after our Japanese friends so well.
