Job Performance Requirement 28-1
Basic Decontamination Steps
JPR 28-1A
A The tool drop is usually the first stage in the decon setup. The tools are placed for the use of another entry team or may be collected here for
later decontamination.
JPR 28-1B
B In most systems gross decon is the next step. Some response teams use showers or
hoselines to accomplish this task.
JPR 28-1C
C The next step is formal decon and may involve two stations in which the responder is rinsed,
scrubbed, and rinsed again. The solution used is chemical dependent and varies depending on the contaminant. This is the first step in which other
responders may assist.
JPR 28-1D
D After the wet portion of the decon process, the entry team removes their PPE, with
the assistance of other responders.
JPR 28-1E
E After the removal of PPE, the entry team will remove their SCBA. It is usually placed into some
type of containment system for later cleaning.
JPR 28-1F
F In some systems a fourth washing area is established for body washing. Some
teams may set up a tent for this purpose.
JPR 28-1G
G The last steps are hydration and medical evaluation.
JPR 28-1H
H Medical evaluation after entry is very important. Hazardous materials suit work is very stressful
on the body.
