The 16th Annual McCollough Medical Scholars Forum will be held on February 9th and 10th.
The McCollough Medical Scholars Forum, sponsored by The University of Alabama’s College of Arts and
Sciences, was established by Alabama physician Dr. Gaylon McCollough and his wife, Susan, who are both UA
alumni. Keynote speakers are Dr. Jonathan Gavras, senior vice president and chief medical officer at Prime
Therapeutics, and Dr. Matthew Might, director of the Hugh Kaul Personalized Medicine Institute at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Forum’s aim is to emphasize the importance of liberal arts
education in the study and practice of medicine. Students will have the opportunity to engage in
conversation with forum keynote speakers, invited health care professionals, faculty members, and other
guests of the College, regarding humanistic and social issues in medicine. This event is for pre-health
students. This year’s keynote speakers will discuss cutting edge topics in personalized and pharmaceutical
medicine and their relation to the daily practice of healthcare.
Registration for the McCollough Medical Scholars Forum will open on Monday, January 22nd for students &

Sophomore Mock Interviews

Dr. Steve Filler from the University of Alabama at
Birmingham’s School of Dentistry will be conducting
Sophomore Mock Interviews on Wednesday,
January 31st in 200 Clark Hall. Interviews are one-on-
one, 30-minute sessions that allow you to get feedback and ask questions that you may
have related to dentistry school. Interviews will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Dr. Phillip D. Reynolds from the Alabama College
of Osteopathic Medicine will be conducting
Sophomore Mock Interviews on Tuesday, February 6th
in 200 Clark Hall. Interviews are one-on-one, 30-minute
sessions that allow you to get feedback and ask questions that you may have related to
medical school. Interviews will be conducted from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
*Sign-up sheets will be available at the front desk of
200 Clark Hall one week prior to interview date.
Sophomore workshops are to prepare students in their second year of pre-health studies to become more
competitive applicants. The goal is to identify areas of weakness in your application and develop a plan to
address those weaknesses. Topics for each workshop include: evaluating your competitiveness, research,
shadowing, service, and building your pre-health résumé. Workshop dates are Wednesday, 2/21 at 1:00 p.m.,
Wednesday, 3/7 at 11:00 a.m. and Wednesday, 4/11 at 2:00 p.m. R.S.V.P. by stopping by 200 Clark Hall to
sign-up at the front desk.
Spring Sophomore Workshops
Looking for a great leadership opportunity?
The College of Arts & Sciences is accepting applications from students who are interested in serving as a Student Ambassador for the college. Student Ambassadors should be knowledgeable about the College and University, and have interest in working with students, administration, donors and friends. Ambassadors will work closely with the A&S Office of Development and the Office of Student Services. Please visit ambassadors.as.ua.edu/application for more information and to submit your application. Application deadline is Monday, February 19th.

2018 NIDA Summer Research Internship Program Call for Applications
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites students interested in pursuing a career in substance abuse research to submit an application for the 2018 NIDA Summer Research Internship
Program. To apply online and to view program information, see the NIDA Summer Research Internship Program online application.
This program provides summer research internships to undergraduate students 18 years and older, with a focus on recruiting students underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, and clinical sciences (American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander). Graduating 2018 college seniors are eligible to apply.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old by May 31, 2018, must be enrolled in a higher education institution, and must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
Interns work with NIDA funded scientists at research institutions across the United States for 8 weeks in the field of substance abuse and addiction research. For a list of research sites
participating in the 2018 program please see the NIDA Summer Research Internship Program brochure. Internships may involve a variety of experiences including laboratory experiments, data collection and analysis, patient interviews, literature reviews and more.
Interns receive a stipend of $12/hr., and if necessary and eligible, provisions for travel and housing expenses.

Objectives: -To provide students insight into the primary care needs of rural Alabama, particularly in the fields of
Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics;
-To enhance the interns’ understanding of medical school, and the training of family doctors;
-To increase the participants’ competitiveness for medical school admission.
Location: UAB School of Medicine, Huntsville Regional Medical Campus (5 weeks), and at the office of a
Family Medicine doctor near the intern’s hometown (3 weeks).
Dates: June 4th – July 20th, 2018
Stipends: $2,500 to assist with housing, transportation and meals.
College Level and Academic Credentials: Students must have completed at least 4 semesters of
on-campus coursework by May 2018, with an overall GPA in the B or higher range, and scores on the
ACT > 22 or the SAT > 1200. Only Alabama residents are accepted.
Students who have lived in rural Alabama at least eight years are given priority in the selection process.
