STEM Initiative: History• Conceived in 2006 by Indiana University’s first
African American president, Dr. Adam Herbert
• Involves both the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses
• The first STEM Summer Scholars Institute began in 2007; tenth institute forthcoming in summer of 2016

STEM Initiative: Vision• Establish long-term, mutually beneficial,
highly interactive relationships among all partner institutions resulting in:• Increasing numbers of African-American
graduate students, scholars and professionals in the STEM disciplines
• Increased research capacity through faculty collaborations
• Expanded research funding opportunities
• Enriched academic experiences through exchanges of students and faculty

STEM Summer Scholars Institute (SSI)
• 8 week summer residential experience
• 40 hours per week bench research
• Campus apartment & dining facilities
• Access to the library facilities, recreation facilities, computing systems, research labs, campus bus service,research seminars, social gatherings, etc.

The Big Goals:• Year 1: Select and confirm partnerships with MSIs.
Establish Faculty Research Development Institute (FRDI)• Year 2: Full partnership invitations to new MSIs• Year 3: Three collaborative research proposals submitted
for funding• Year 4: Five collaborative research proposals submitted for
funding• Year 5: Complete transition into full partnership for all
partner universities. Seven collaborative research proposals submitted for funding.
