WHAT IS STORED PRODUCT INSECTS (SPI)?

How do you know if you have a SPI infestation? Q: A:
ask the experts >>>
What is SPI? As indicated in the name, SPI are mainly beetles or
moths that infest stored dried foods and are commonly referred to as pantry pests.
Besides home, SPI infest grains and food products at the warehouse, processing
plant, retail store, etc. Almost all dried food products are vulnerable to attack by the
SPI.
Q: A:
Do you have rice, pastas, flour, cereals, nuts, raisins or any other dried foods stored in your home? If your answer is YES, then you probably have seen at least one species of the stored product insects (SPI).
Recognizing the common SPI
Knowing some of the common
species of SPI will help you to
locate the likely sources of
infestation.
If you keep finding the same moth or beetle in your kitchen or pantry, it may be a
good indication of SPI infestation.
SPI usually infest products that have been opened. However, SPI are capable of
attacking unopened food packaging. The adult and larva of some species of SPI are
capable of penetrating into food packages. The SPI deposit eggs on the outer
surface of the food package and the newly hatched larvae then bore through the
packing materials or crawl around the food package in search for openings to
invade. SPI can invade crevices as small as 0.1 mm in width. The seams or folds of
a packing material provide a perfect biting edge for the insects. How do SPI select
their food package? According to a study, the most important factor that influence
the selection of food packages by SPI is the detection of food odour escaping the
package.
1. Cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne
(Fabricius)
*Adult is oval shape and about 2-3mm long, light brown and head is often concealed when viewed from above.
*Attack many stored
products such as cigarettes, coffee beans, dried fruits, herbs, grains, flour, spices, herbarium specimens, etc.
*They are strong fliers,
active during late afternoon and dull cloudy day.

2. Red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst)
3. Redlegged ham beetle, Necrobia rufipes (Fabricius)

*Breed on smoky meats,
dog foods, cheese and bones.

4. Foreign grain beetle, Ahasverus advena (Waltl)
5. Rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (Linnaeus)

of brown spots down back.

grains, cereals, cocoa beans, dried fruits, etc.

NEA’s meteorological service had forecasted dry and warm weather in the coming two weeks due to gradually weakening of the Northeast Monsoon conditions and the continuing influence of El Niño phenomenon. In the past three weeks, low rainfall had been recorded. The dry and warm weather might create increase incidence of Culex mosquito breeding.
Culex mosquitoes typically breed in outdoor areas, notably stagnant water in drains and ground puddles. They prefer to bite in the night and the nuisance they create frequently results in high volume of complaints. It is important that the following preventive measures over the next few weeks.
Step up drain cleaning. Carry out oiling of stagnant water bodies that cannot be removed. Conduct thermal fogging of areas
with mosquito complaints.
