3. Material
3.1 One-Piece Construction - High speed steel..
3.2 Two-Piece Construction
a) Cutting Portion - High speed steel.
b) Shank Portion -Carbon steel with tensile strength not less than 700 MPa [ 1MPa = 0.1 kgf/ mm* ( approx ) I. To meet this requirement, the hardness value shall not be less than 185 HB measured at one third length away from the rear end of the tool.
Note --urk~ otherwise specifiedtie high speed steel shall be according to T83W6Mo5Cr4V2 or T72W18Cr4Vl according to IS : 7291-1974 ‘ Specification for high speed tool steels ’ shall be specified by the manufacturer.

4. Hardness - 750 HV to 830 HV ( 62 HRC to 65 HRC ) [see IS : 1501 - 1968 Method for Vickers hardness test for steel ( first revision ) and IS : 1586 - 1968 Method for Rockwell hardness test ( B and C scales ) for steel ( first revision ) 1.
4.1 For two-piece constructiqn, the hardness shall be maintained over the length I,.
5. General Requirements
5.1 The shank sections and designations of tool shanks shall be according to IS : 1983-1962 ’ Specification for shank sections for single point turning and planing tools ‘.
5.2 The figures are indicative of dimensions only and do not specify design features.
6. Workmanship and Finish -The tools shall be soundly forged to shape and shall be free from burrs, rust, seams, cracks or other manufacturing defects. The butt-welding in case of tools of two- piece.construction shall be sound. The tools shall be supplied well-finished, with the cutting edges and relief angles ground and ready for use.
7. Marking - To be marked on the rear left-hand side of shank with designation of shank, hand of cutting ( R or L) and the manufacturer’s name or trade-mark.
7.1 Certification Marking - Details available with the Bureau of Indian Standards.
8. Protective Coating* and Packing - The tools shal! be painted for rust .proofing. The cutting Portion Of all tools shall be protected against damage by a suitable plastic coating. then be packed in boxes or containers for safe handling.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
This standard was first published in 1965 on the basis of relevant DIN Standards. In the present revision tool section have been further rationalized and overall lengths have been reduced., The nose radii have been changed to conform to the work being done by lSO/TC 29 Small Tools.
