This Indian Standard (First Revision) was adopted by the Bureau d Indian Standards, after the draft finalized bythe Man-made Fibres, Cotton and Their Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Textile DivisionCouncil.
This standard, was first published in 1993, as need was felt to formulate an Indian Standard on superior type ofcotton yam to cater to the demands from textile mills using high speed auto looms as well as shuttleless looms forproducing high quality fabrics. This revision has been taken up to incorporate the requirements of cotton yarnsbeing manufactured with the use of advance technology in spinning mills with emphasis on export market.
In this standard, the requirement of hairiness index has also been specified.
The composition of the Committee responsible for the preparation of this standard isgiven in Annex D.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in’accordance withIS 2:1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revise@’. The number of significant plains retaimd in therounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1 SCOPE
1.1 This standard specifies requirements of ring spun(single and doubled) grey cotton yam for use in highspeed autolooms and shuttless looms.
1.2 This standard does not cover yam produced fromblends of co~on with man-made fibres or any otherfibre.
2 REFERENCES
The standards listed in Annex A contain provisionswhich through reference in this text, constituteprovisions of this standard. At the time of publication,the editions indicated were valid. All standards aresubject to revision and parties to agreements based onthis standard are encouraged to investigate thepossibility of applying the most recent edition ofstandard.
3 TERMINOLOGY
For the purpose of this standard the followingdefinitions shall apply.
3.1 Cotton Count (Ne) — The number of hanks (eachmeasuring 768 m or yd) in 453.6 g (or llb).
3.2 Count Lea Strength Product (CSP) — A numberobtained by the following relationship:
CSP = Breaking load ofa lea, in kg x cotton count(Ne) x 2.2046
3.3 Grey Cotton Yarn — Yarn as it leaves the spinningframe without any bleaching, dyeing or finishingtreatment and in case of open end yarn, it may havebeen waxed or not waxed.
3.4 Hairiness Index (~ — Total length of protrudingfibres in the yam in cm with reference to the sensinglength of 1 cm yam
3.5 Lea — A continuous length of yam measuring109.73 m (120 yd) in the form of a coil having 80 wrapswound on a reel of 1.37 m (1.5 yd) girth.
3.6 -Lea Breating Load — The breaking load of a leadetermined on a pendulum type testing machine, therate of traverse being 300 * 15 mm/min.
-3.7 Ring Spun Yarn — Yarn spun on a systememploying flat top cards and roller drafting assemblieswith or without aprons on drawing, roving and ringframes.
3.8 Single Yarn Tenacity — Tensile stress of a singlestrand at rupture expressed as force per unit lineardensity of the unstrained specimen expressed usuallyas cN/tex (gf/tex).
3.9 Tex — Number indicating the mass in grams of1 km of yarn; the relationship between the cotton countme) and the tex being as under:

4 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Single Yarn
The single grey cotton carded or combed yam shallcomply with the requirements given in Table 1 orTable 2 respectively. However the average count of yarnshall be as agreed to be~een the buyer and the sellerwith a tolerance of +3.0 percent permissible on thecount of yarn when determined as per the methodprescribed in 1S 1315.
4.1.1 Twist in Yarn
The twist in yarn shall be as agreed to between the buyerand the seller and average twist shall be within +10percent of the specified value.
NOTE — In direct system of yarn numbering twist factorcorresponds to the twist multiplier in indirect system of yarnnumbering. These are calculated as under:

1 The unevenness percentage (U percent) (see also Note 2) and the imperfections per km of the yam on packages shall not exceed thevalues given in Table 1 when tested at a speed of400 m/min and at sensitivity level of–SO, +S0 and +200 percent for thin places, thickplaces and neps respectively. The speeds and sensivity level are specified based on the most popular instrument for determiningevenness used in the testing for yam. The speed and sensitivity levels may be altered, subject to the agreement between the buyer andthe seller.
2 The unevenness percent can be expressed as coefficient of variation of unevenness using the formula

3 The evenness testers are equipped with hairiness testing module which is used to measure hairiness in yams directly. The measurementzone is formed by a field of homogeneousparallel beam of light. The scattered light is caused by those flbres protruding outside theyarn body. The scattered light is a measure of the hairiness and it is measured electrically.
4.1.1.1 The twist in yarn shall be determined by themethod prescribed in IS 832.
4.1.2 Yarn Appearance
The average black board appearance (5 boards) shallbeat least of Grade B as specified in IS 13260. In caseof yarn counts coarser than 98 tex (6s) this shall be asagreed to between the buyer and the seller.
4.1.3 Freedom from Defects
4.1.3.1 The yam shall be free from defects listed inAnnex B.
4.1.3.2 If agreed to between the buyer and the seller,

the yam on packages may also be tested for classimatfaults and the values shall not exceed the values givenin Table 1or Table 2.
NOTE— The classimat faults are tested by the ClassimatSystem most commonly used in the mills. These are tested inclassimat tester where the yarn passes tbro%h the sensorsand the faults are expressed as number of faults per one lakhmetre of yarn. This system works on the capacitanceprinciple. Classimat faults shall be categorized as specifiedin Annex C.
4.1.4 Moisture Regain

4.2 Two-Fold Yarn @oubled Yarn)
4.2.1 The single yarn used for produci~ two-fold yamshall satisfy the requirements specified in 4.1.
4.2.2 The average resultant count of the two-fold yamshall be as agreed to between the buyer and the seller.However, a tolerance of+3 percent shall be permissibleon the average resultant count.
4.2.2.1 The resultant count shall be determined as perthe method prescribed in IS 1315.

4.2.3 Lea Breaking Load
The lea breaking load of two-fold yarn shall bedetermined by the method prescribed in IS 1671.
4.2.4 The ply twist in the two-fold yam shall be asagreed to between the buyer and the seller, and theaverage ply twist shall be within +5 percent of thespecified value.
4.2.4.-1 The twist shall be determined by methodprescribed in IS 832.
4.2.5 The yarn quality parameters of the double yarnshall -be as agreed to between the buyer and the seller,however, the yarn quality improvement due to doublingwhen compared to the single yam quality parameterswould be as given in Table 3.
5 MARKING
5.1 Each cone or cheese of yam shall be marked withthe following:

The words ‘carded’ or ‘combed’ alternativelyinitials ‘K’ for carded or ‘C’ for combed, asapplicable;
The words ‘100 percent cotton’ and in caseof yarn meant for hosiery ‘Hosiery yam’;

Indication of the source of manufacture; and
Any other information required by the buyer
5.2 Each case containing cones or cheeses shall bemarked with the following:
a) Count of yam;
b) Gross mass of bale or case;
c) Net mass of bale or case;
d) Indication of the source of manufacture; and
e) Any other information re-quired by the buyeror by the law in force.
5.3 BIS Certification Marking
The conelcheese of yam and case containing coneslcheese may also be marked with BIS Standard Mark.
5.3.i The use of the Standard Mark is governed by theprovisions of the Bureau ofIndian Standards Act, 1986and the Rules and “Regulations ma& thereunder. Thedetails of conditions under which the licence for the useof the Standard Mark maybe granted to manufacturersor producers maybe obtained from the Bureau of IndianStandards.
6 PACKING
Unless otherwise agreed to.between the buyer and theseller, the yam shall be packed in accordance with theprocedure laid down in anyone of the Indian Standardsgiven below:
a) IS 293

7 SAMPLING
7.1 Lot
In any consignment, the cases containing yam of thesame type and of the same nominal count shallconstitute a lot.
7.2 Samples shall be drawn from each lot to determineits confomi~ with the requirements of the standard.
7.3 Unless otherwise agreed to between the buyer andthe seller, the number of Gasesto be selected from a lotshall be in accordance with Table 4. The bales or casesshall be selected at random, and in order to ensure therandomness of selection, guidance may be obtainedfrom IS 4905.

7.4 In case two or less cases are selected in the sample,at least 10 cones or cheeses shall be drawn at random

from each of the selected case. However, in case threeor more cases are selected in the sample, atleast fivecones or cheeses shall be drawn at random from eachof the selected case. The number of leas to be preparedfrom each cone/cheese, The number ofleas so preparedfrom the lot shall be equal to 30.
7.4.1 In case single yarn tenacity is determined, thenumber of tests shall not be less than 50.
7.5 Criteria forConformity
The lot shall be considered as conforming to therequirements of this standard, if the followingconditions are satisfied:

The average count calculated from the testresults lies within the tolerances specified andthe coefficient of variation for the count is lessthan those specified values.
The count lea strength product or tenacity, asthe case may be, is greater than or equal tothe minimum specified values, and thecoefficient of variation is less than thespecified values.
All the test specimens examined for defects,appearance, evenness, twist, moisture,hairiness index shall satisfy the relevantrequirements.

Review of Indian Standards
Amendments are issued to standards as the need arises on the basis of comments. Standards are al-soreviewedperiodically; a standard along with amendments is reaffirmed when such review indicates that no changes areneeded; if the review indicates that changes are needed, it is taken up for revision. Users of Indian Standardsshould ascertain that they are in possession of the latest amendments or edition by referring to the latest issue of‘BIS Catalogue’ and ‘Standards : Monthly Additions’.
