Antipolo was converted from a municipality into a component city of Rizal Province on April 4,
1998, under Republic Act No. 8508. A new provincial capitol building was inaugurated in the city in
March 2009 to replace the old capitol in Pasig which has long been outside the jurisdiction of Rizal
Province; after Pasig was included in Metro Manila in 1975. With the transfer of the provincial
government to Antipolo, it is highly favored to be officially designated as the new capital of the
province. On March 14, 2011, Antipolo was declared a "highly-urbanized city" by President Benigno
Aquino; such proclamation however still needs to be ratified in a plebiscite.
Its higher elevation than that of Metro Manila affords it a scenic view of the metropolis, especially at
night. Its locally grownmangoes and cashews are popular among tourists, as well as suman – a
local delicacy made out of glutinous rice. TheHinulugang Taktak National Park, which was once a
popular summer get-away is being restored to become again one of the city's primary attractions.
The city is popular for being a pilgrimage site. It prides itself as the "Pilgrimage Capital of the
Philippines." The Marian image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage or the Virgin of
Antipolo, which was brought in from Mexico in 1626, and enshrined in the Antipolo Cathedral has a
continuous following among Filipino Catholics since the Spanish era. A popular custom of pilgrims
to the Virgin of Antipolo is the trek going to its shrine on the eves of Good Friday and May 1, from
various locations in Rizal Province and Metro Manila. Some pilgrims would begin the trek
from Quiapo Church in Downtown Manila following the procession of the image. There is also an
existing custom to have new cars blessed at the church in the belief that this will ensure the safety
of the car and its passengers.

During the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, Taytay was formally founded in 1623. Taytay
became the capital of the province of Calamianes, the entire territory of Paragua (now Palawan), in
1818; and the province of Castilla, a land area occupying the northern part of Palawan, in 1858.
Before the Spanish colonization, The Kingdom of Taytay was ruled by a monarch noted as followed
everywhere at any given time by ten scribes. The crew of Ferdinand Magellan held the Taytay king
and queen for ransom after escaping the Battle of Mactanwhere Magellan was slain. They intended
to secure more supplies as they plan to cross into the Moluccas where the Portuguese were so help
can be sought. The native king and his subjects complied with the demands and even added more
food supplies than what they asked for. This was duly recorded by Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's
chronicler, who was on board in one of the ships when these events took place.
Archived baptismal records of Cuyo, Palawan show that the last monarch of the Kingdom of Taytay
to be converted to Christianity was christened Flores de los Santos Cabaylo meaning Cabaylo,
Flower of the Saints. No other sovereign royal datu after him ruled in his kingdom. King Cabaylo's
descendants include the present clans of Manlavi, Gabinete, Acosta and Macolor as main
genealogical roots. His Royal Highness Datu Dr.Fernando Macolor Cruz who hailed from the
Cabailo-Manlavi-Gabinete-Macolor line of the royal house is the present pretender and sole
claimant to the most serene and ancient throne of the Kingdom of Taytay.
During the American era, Taytay ceased being Palawan's capital, and its administrative boundary
was reduced by approximately 500,000 hectares upon the creation of the Municipality of El
Nido in 1916.

Philippines an 'investment magnet' to European countries, says Spanish envoyby: Philippines News Agency June 30, 2015 6:22 PM
• Spanish Ambassador Luis A. Calvo on Tuesday said that the Philippines is becoming an attractive investment
destination for countries in the European Union.
• The EU considers itself a privileged trade partner of the Philippines & is looking forward to having their own free
trade agreement (FTA) similar to the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) integrated economic zone.
• Ambassador Calvo said that investing in the Philippines has been made “more attractive” by the grant of the
Enhanced Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP+) that allows a wide range of products to enter the
European market while paying less or no duties.
• “The European Union and the Philippines have been exploring possibilities of negotiating a free trade agreement
that would legitimize the fact that this 28-member group constitutes privileged trade partner of the Philippines and
would also rapidly improve our respective opportunities to benefit both nations,” Calvo said.
• Spain would like “to provide this economic development with institutional support that shall respond to the new level
of economic cooperation and it has likewise proposed the creation for economic discussion and investments that we
expect in the near future.”
• Calvo led the commemorative rites, together with Ambassadors Julio Camarena of Mexico, Rolando Guevara
Alvarado of Panama, Truong Trieu Duong of Vietnam, Luis Lillo of Chile, members of the diplomatic corps, including
Office of European Affairs executive director Adrian Bernie Canbolada in the observance of the 13th Philippine-
Spanish Friendship Day, coinciding with the 116th anniversary of the historic “Siege of Baler"
