A CONTINUUM FOR CHANGE…………WHERE ARE YOU HEADING WITH INTEGRATION?

With Robert Haag, Deputy Head of Secondary and MYP Coordinator, Greenfield Community School, Dubai

And Michelle Haag, Ph.D. Curriculum Coordinator Collegiate American School , Dubai

As you come in, write your thoughts about integrating standards on your post-it and place

it on the continuum with the group at your table today.

The CORE of this Session

After our time together, you should be able to …

▪ Show where the NGSS standards ask students to use skills associated with other disciplines

▪ Work within the Common Core to understand ELA links to content and skills in Science and Technology

▪ Find common practices in several core disciplines

▪ Suggest ways to move toward an integrated curriculum at your own school, at your own level

Next Generation is What and HOW we teach Science

What is the CONCEPTUAL SHIFT that the Next Generation Brings?

http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards

1. K-12 Science Education Should Reflect the Interconnected Nature of Science as it is Practiced and Experienced in the Real World.

2. The Next Generation Science Standards are student performance expectations – NOT curriculum.

3. The Science Concepts in the NGSS Build Coherently from K–12.

4. The NGSS Focus on Deeper Understanding of Content as well as Application of Content.

5. Science and Engineering are Integrated in the NGSS, from K–12.

WHY ?

What’s in it for me and for my students?

How is Next Generation Organized to make those shifts in teaching?

▪ The three areas are:

▪ PRACTICES

▪ CROSS-CUTTING CONCEPTS

The Next Generation Science Practices

The Framework describes eight practices in Science and Engineering that all students needed to learn.

These are the skills and knowledge needed to do science.

All Core Areas have Practices

But integration only BEGINS at these overlap areas

To truly integrate, teacher teams will find skills that are enhanced with exposure in several content areas…. even without similar content

Learning Standards for Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects

▪ Before there were the Next Generation Standards the Common Core had embedded The Learning Standards for Social Studies, Science and Technology

▪ These identify broad, general Key Ideas and Performance Indicators

▪ Encourages literacy skills in areasa including Science being the "responsibility of the whole school" and not to be taught in isolation"

What? The Common Core has had Science Standards all along? Where are they?

It is important to note that the grade 6–12 ELA literacy standards are meant to supplement content standards in those areas, not replace them.

The skills are designed to prepare students for life outside the classroom.

They include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely and attentively read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy complex works of literature.

Does the Common Core address Social Studies in grades K-5?

▪ The Learning Standards begin at grade 6.

▪ Standards for K-5 reading in history and social studies are integrated into the K-5 Reading standards.

▪ Example:

Reading: Informational Text » Grade 4

Key Ideas and Details:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.1Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.2Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.3Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.

Does the Common Core address Science in grades K-5?

▪ Again, standards for K-5 reading in science and technical subjects are integrated into the K-5 Reading standards.

▪ Example:

Reading: Informational Text » Grade 3Craft and Structure:

▪ CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.4Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.

▪ CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.5Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently.

▪ Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:

▪ CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

Why are there Standards for Science in the ELA Common Core grades 6-12?

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects represent the NEXT GENERATION of standards designed to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life by the time they graduate from high school.

The standards lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person who is prepared for success in the 21st century.
