In The Fire
Prelude
Opening Song - “Holy, Holy, Holy”
Welcome
Prayer
Song - “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”
*Invocation
We meet in the strong name of our God,
We praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
*Litany (From Psalm 103)
Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits,
Who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed
like the eagle’s.
The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel:
The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;
He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those
who fear him;
As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those
who fear him;
For he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.
The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field;
The wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.
But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and
his righteousness with their children’s children;
Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, my soul.
*Prayer of the Day
God, you are our refuge and strength. In you we put our hope. You deliver us from
the pit of darkness, and give us freedom. You deliver us from our enemies, and
empower us to show your love to others. Help us be salt and light. Help us stand
through trouble and hardships. You are our rock and mighty fortress. Be worshiped
and praised O God! We praise you with all of our hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Scripture - Hebrews 12:1-3 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw
off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with
perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and
perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured
such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Gospel - Luke 6:20-22 20 Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the
kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed
are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the
Son of Man.
Sermon Text - Daniel 3:13-28 13 Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it
true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship
the image of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute,
zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship
the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown
immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my
hand?” 16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar,
we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into
the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us
Eric’s Ponderings . . . 1. How can we worship God with all of our hearts?
2. What are some ways that you compromise worshiping God, or following
Him?
3. Are there any idols in your life right now?
4. What does persecution for our faith mean? Physical? Peer pressure to do
things that don’t honor God?
5. Have you been persecuted for your faith before? What happened?
6. How can we live in a way where we are not ashamed of the Gospel?
How can we both live our faith out, and tell others about the hope we
have in Christ?
from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your
Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set
up.” 19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times
hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie
up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So
these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and
thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the
furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach,
Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing
furnace. 24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his
advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They
replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” 25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in
the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” 26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and
shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come
out! Come here!” So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and
the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw
that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their
robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. 28 Then
Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the
king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship
any god except their own God.”
