Dear Golden Key
Members!
As the poet, Robert Burns
said, “Summer is „a-
coming in.” He was
somewhat quainter in his
expression, but the result
is the same! The school
year is almost behind us
and at least some of us
are looking forward to
long, lazy days with abso-
lutely nothing to do. No,
you say? You will be slav-
ing in summer school, or
working hard at a summer
job to make ends meet.
Or even more challenging:
You will be graduated and
looking for a “real” job in
the “real” world.
Whatever your future
plans, I hope you will re-
member that once a
“GKer,” always a “GKer.”
You are a leader and a
life-long member
of Golden Key.
You have accom-
plished so much
during your resi-
dence at CSUSB.
I will always
treasure your
presence here
and what you
have contributed
to the chapter
and campus.
To those of you
who are graduating this
June, I wish you health,
happiness and success as
you fulfill your potential.
To those of you that plan
to be on campus next
year, I look forward to
sharing
the exciting challenges
and activities ahead.
May the values of Integ-
rity, Collaboration, Innova-
tion, Respect, Diversity,
Excellence, and Engage-
ment continue to charac-
terize our attitudes and
relationships. Well done!
Congratulations!
A Happy Summer to all!

A Word From the Advisor
Gold and Bold! Golden Key Induction Ceremony Rachel Sandoval
The skies were clear and the sun was shining on CSUSB on the morning of April 18, a blissful setting awaited all the new Golden Key Inductees, proud parents, and
supportive friends.
Volunteers gathered early in preparation for the annual Induction Ceremony.
Golden Key members practiced speeches in the background, guest tables were set,
and certificates organized, all until the doors to the ceremony finally opened.

The Student Union became crowded
with eager faces, curious about what
awaited them inside the reception room. As fervid students waited patiently to be
checked-in, many students stepped aside
to walk toward the information booth to learn more about the benefits of member-
ship, sign-up for upcoming events, and to
pick up some Golden Key stickers.
Amidst inductees finding their seats, a slide show played on the center stage dis-
playing pictures of members that partici-
pated in past service projects. Once the room settled, the ceremony began and
our wonderful Chapter President, Jayne
Antolin delivered her introduction and wel-come speech to the attentive audience.
As Jayne concluded her speech the
Chapter Historian, Mindy Velasquez gave
a brief history of the Golden Key society. Mindy also mentioned the enormous
achievement each individual to be in-
ducted had attained for surpassing obsta-cles and emerging as a leader in their re-
spective class.
Colleen Ware the Associate Director of
US University Relations and spotlight of
our last Golden Key Newsletter, then fol-lowed by outlining the benefits of Golden
Key membership. As Ms. Ware stepped off
the stage, our very own motivational advi-sor, Dr. Ruth Burke then proceeded by
delivering an empowering recognition of
corresponding Chapter Officers, Leader-ship Board and Honorary Members.

This year’s 2008-2009 Honorary
Members included Ms. Lavinia Wil-liams, Administrative Support Assis-
tant, FSMP/Honors; Dr. Susan Finsen,
Director, University Honors Program; and Dr. Dany Doueiri, Assistant Profes-
sor, World Languages & Literatures.
As the ceremony continued the
Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Frank Rincon gave an inspiring key-
note address congratulating the new
members and emphasizing the impor-tance of a commitment to excelling as
an individual whether through educa-
tional, occupational, or personal goals.
After a set of encouraging ad-dresses, students received their Cer-
tificate of Membership, were read the
Golden Key charge, and their responsi-bilities as a lifetime member. Scholar-
ships were also awarded to three out-
standing students: Celeste Malkin, Amy Hayden, and Tashana Sybliss who
are undergraduate students and
Quang Steven Bui who is currently a graduate student.
The ceremony could not have con-
cluded without several brave students
taking center stage to join in the “Chicken Dance” and playing a game
of “hot potato” with Coyote pom-poms.
The Induction Ceremony was a great success in welcoming our new mem-
bers, uniting as an organization, and
as individuals committed to excellence. Congratulations again to all the new
members!

Golden Key Spotlight: Meet Lavinia Williams,
Administrative Support Assistant, FSMP/Honors
Early in the spring quarter Golden
Key Headquarters made a call for all
U.S. Chapter‟s participation on GK
Achiever Jumpstart Kit a program
created to promote our service mis-
sion of “Advancing Literacy”. Literacy
as defined by Golden Key states is
“An individual‟s ability to read, write,
speak, compute and solve problems
at levels of proficiency necessary to
function on the job, in the family of
the individual and in the individual‟s
society” as adopted in August 2007.
As a result, the idea behind these kits is to include items, ma-
terials, and information that will JUMPSTART over 600 students
from 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from an inner-city middle
school located in Atlanta, Georgia to a path of academic excellence
and encouraging them to attend college. The items, materials and
information needed were pencils/pens, notebooks, folders, univer-
sity promotional brochures, encouraging letters addressed to the
students among other items. The Golden Key chapter of California
State University of San Bernardino therefore called for member
participation to collect these items throughout the spring quarter.
On June 5, 2009 we had a gather-
ing to determine what was collected
and packed these items to be
shipped to Golden Key Headquar-
ters. Overall, we were able to gather
384 pencils; 218 pens; 27 one
subject notebooks; 10 folders; 2
boxes of flyers about College Mak-
ing it Happen: A Guide for Middle
School Families & Educators; and
434 inspiring notes of encourage-
ment for
the stu-
dents. With the help of our San
Bernardino members from collect-
ing or donating the items, writing
the notes of encouragement or
helping to pack these items and all
the U.S. chapters participation the
recipients of these kits will gain
tools and information to assist
them in their academic success.

When I joined golden Key almost two years ago, the CSUSB chapter E-Board consisted of
three officers: a President, Vice President, and Treasurer…and of course, our chapter advisor, Dr.
Burke! Since then, the E-Board had expanded to a total of nine officers, currently seven. We now include in our ranks Recording and Corresponding Secretaries, Service and Social Directors, a His-
torian, and Webmaster. As the current E-Board members move on, we are proud to announce that
next year’s E-Board will boast a full team of officers, each an outstanding Golden Key member dedicated to furthering the mission of our Society.
Congratulations to each of you! We can’t wait to see the amazing things our chapter will accom-
plish next year with you at the helm. Lead on!
