Extracurricular activities as the term itself defines are activities which are extra in nature. Its
effect on students is long lasting and life enhancing. These extracurricular activities can be indoor or
outdoor but both can impart better understanding of one's own abilities, talents, and career goals.
Taking part in these out-of-the-classroom activities helps students to understand the
importance of critical thinking skills, time management, and academic and intellectual competence. Extracurricular
activities provide a setting to become involved and to interact with other students leading to increased learning and
enhanced development.
As people say, “Extracurricular activities are completely optional. It is up to the student whether they undertake
them or not” but according to me students can learn the importance of commitment and responsibility of their own can
learn only through the extracurricular activities.
The Major role of extracurricular activities is to make them understand the importance about responsibility,
commitment, communication, teamwork skill and Time management skill. Activities held under Department of
Management are Guest Lectures, Workshops, Seminars and Conferences, Events/ Inter B School Competitions , Club
activities like HR Club, Finance Club and many more. It adds extra weightage to job and shows well-rounded personality.
Different activities give you different roles in a team/group. Each role is important and teaches us leadership and
management skills and sense of responsibility. Here it shows the area of expertise to utilize their subject skills like Financial
skills, Marketing skills and various other fields of management.
We, at Imperial College, encourage our students to participant in all the extracurricular activities. Every Saturday
we conduct some events or activities in our campus which refresh our students from their routine curriculum. We give the
opportunities to each and every individual student to participant in Conference, Guest Lecture, Workshop, Indoor/Outdoor
Competitions and many such events.
We proudly tell to our students “Extracurricular Activities challenges you and yours limits”.
What is the Role of Extracurricular activity in management education?
I got hands on experience by attending interviews for the position of a tester in IT industry which I want to share with the student community. According to me there are six points which a tester should keep in mind while giving the interview
1. Self Confidence – Testers should be sure of what they are doing, and should show this to their peers both in their Testing Team as well as to their Development peers.
2. Common Sense – As testers many times we need to make decisions based on incomplete pieces of information, the only way to succeed in this task is by having a good level of intelligence and common sense and often by extrapolating and “tying loose ends” in case of lack of sufficient information for decision making.
3. Communication Skills – This refers to the ability to explain and communicate an idea to someone who is not in your immediate working context. This is even more imperative of a tester who needs to explain non-trivial things like bugs, tests, and even potential risks related to the technical tasks they perform.
4. Knowledge (basic or advanced) of Testing - Today there is no excuse for not having some idea about the principles of testing since everything can be found on the Internet. If you want to go even further you can gain practical experience by joining some of the crowd sourcing testing communities
5. Some Knowledge of the Company they are Interviewing for – One should be always curious enough to learn (even a little) about the company they are interviewing for. The one who comes for a company interview without knowing their basic business is not interested enough in order to get the job at hand.
6. Truthfulness – Precisely, if a candidate is making things up and lying just to please me then I won't be able to trust him
in the future. If someone is not truthful then I won't be able to trust him or his work.
