ILLUSTRATION ANALYSIS OF FRUIT CROP INFORMATION APPEARED IN

AGROWON NEWS PAPERMANOJ C. JADHAV AND S.B. SHINDE

To achieve high production, farmers have to master

new skills and learn to mange and manipulate various

inputs. This is possible only when there is a sound

communication strategy, which would effectively and

quickly, disseminate the latest technology to the farming

community and influence individual farmer in adopting it.

An appropriate combination of various communication

channels is necessary so that the various agricultural

innovations could reach all categories of farmers without

any loss of time. In India, the use of mass media in the

dissemination of agricultural technology is not adequate.

A knowledge about the extent a newspaper help in

dissemination of new agricultural technologies will be of

great use to the extension workers as well as to the

administrators agricultural development . Horticulture is

one of the major fields in agriculture. The information on

horticulture raises the economic activities of rural farmers.

But perception of information depend on its quality and

presentation.

Illustration play key role In presentation. Without

illustration text is dead material. With this in view an

attempt was made to analyze the horticultural information

and illustration in Marathi newspaper Agrowon with

following objectives:

ABSTRACT

An appropriate combination of various communication channels is necessary so that the

various agricultural innovations could reach all categories of farmers without any loss of

time. In India, among mass media, newspaper plays key role in dissemination of new agricultural

technology among farmers. The every third issue of Agrowon newspaper making the size

sample 122 newspapers was selected purposively. The data were collected with the help of

the pretested proforma. Regarding coverage of horticultural information, it was observed that

maximum coverage was given on fruit crop information, followed by vegetable crop information.

In Illustration type, photographs observed in maximum number. Among placement of

illustrations left upper left side was topped. Regarding colour, multicolour illustrations were

maximum. In sub-tropical fruit crops without illustration information was more. The study

implies that there is a need to increase the coverage of type of illustrations such as drawings,

cartoons and graphs for better understanding of the fruit crop information to the readers.

2. To study the use of Illustrations and its type, size

and placement in crop information.

METHODOLOGY

AGROWON a farm Marathi newspaper was

considered purposefully for the study. The issues of the

Agrowon newspaper published in one year i.e. from 19th

April, 2005 to 18th April, 2006 were considered. Every

third issue was selected purposively making the size of

about 122 Newspaper. Firstly each issue of newspaper

was read carefully and horticultural informations were

classified into various branches of horticulture viz., Fruit

crops, vegetable crops, flower crops, spices crops,

aromatic and medicinal crops. The illustrations used in

the fruit crop information grouped in presence or absence

of illustrations, space occupied by the illustrations, types

of illustrations used i.e. photograph, drawing cartoons,

graph and other also the colour used in the illustrations.

The data in respect of illustrations analysis of Agrowon

newspaper were collected with the help of the pertested

proforma designed for the study.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
